With an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, owners can stream select PS5 games without downloading or installing them—and without owning or switching on a PS5. It is not a way to play every PS5 game: eligibility, region, subscription, and a reliable internet connection all matter.
What launched—and when?
Cloud Streaming officially arrived on PlayStation Portal on November 5, 2025, at 6 p.m. PT (November 6 at 2 a.m. GMT). It followed a beta that began in November 2024. At launch, Sony added support for selected digital PS5 games in users’ libraries alongside games from PlayStation Plus catalogs. Sony’s launch announcement describes the release and examples of supported games.

The change gives Portal two distinct ways to play. Remote Play streams from your own PS5; Cloud Streaming connects directly to Sony’s servers. Portal remains a streaming device, not a handheld console that installs or runs PS5 games locally.
Cloud Streaming vs. Remote Play
| Feature | Remote Play | Cloud Streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | Your PS5 | Sony’s cloud servers |
| PS5 required | Yes; it must be configured and reachable | No |
| Game installation | The game must be installed on the PS5 | No local installation on your PS5 |
| PlayStation Plus Premium required | No | Yes |
| Physical game | Can be played through the PS5, subject to the console and disc being available | A physical disc does not provide a cloud-streaming entitlement |
| Internet required | Yes | Yes |
Cloud play can be useful if your PS5 is powered off or someone else is using it. Remote Play remains the option for games installed on your own console that are not in the cloud-streaming selection.
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
Which games can you stream?
Premium members can stream select PS5 games from three sources: the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, the Classics Catalog, and eligible digital PS5 games they own. A purchase does not automatically make a game streamable, and owning a physical copy does not count as owning the digital license for this purpose.
PlayStation Plus catalogs
Sony’s Portal page highlights catalog games such as Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, and Hogwarts Legacy. Catalog membership and availability change over time and may differ by region; a listed game can leave a catalog.
Eligible digital purchases
Selected digital PS5 games bought through PlayStation Store can be streamed from your library if they remain eligible and you have Premium. Sony named Astro Bot, Borderlands 4, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Fortnite, Ghost of Yōtei, Grand Theft Auto V, and Resident Evil 4 as launch examples. Those examples are not a complete or permanent list.
Check a specific title in Sony’s PlayStation Store cloud-streaming category or its Cloud Streaming game finder before relying on it. Portal cloud streaming currently supports select PS5 titles, not PS4 or PS3 games. It is unavailable to child accounts, and supported games vary by country or region.

What “no installs” does—and doesn’t—mean
Because the game runs on Sony’s servers, you do not need to download it, wait for a local installation or update, free PS5 storage, or keep it installed on your console. You still need to start a streaming session, and the game must be available to your account and region.

Requirements and regional availability
To use Cloud Streaming, you need a PlayStation Portal Remote Player, a PlayStation account, an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, a supported broadband connection, and an eligible game. Sony’s current support list includes the following locations: United States, Canada, Japan, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Both the user’s location and PlayStation account region must be eligible. See Sony’s Portal Cloud Streaming support page for current requirements and availability.
Sony lists minimum upload and download speeds of 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p, and 13 Mbps for 1080p. These are minimums, not a promise of steady image quality or responsiveness: latency, Wi-Fi congestion, signal strength, routing, household traffic, and service conditions can all affect play.
How to start a cloud-streaming game
- Turn on your Portal and install any available system software update.
- Sign in with the PlayStation account that has the Premium subscription and eligible game access.
- From the Portal Home screen, open the options in the upper-left corner and select Cloud Streaming.
- Choose a game from the Premium streaming selections, a PlayStation Plus catalog, or an eligible title in Your Library.
- Select the game to start the cloud session.
Sony’s instructions are on its PlayStation Plus support page. If a title is absent or asks you to obtain an entitlement on another device, check its cloud eligibility, your account and region, and your subscription status.
What it costs in the United States
PlayStation Plus Premium is required for Portal Cloud Streaming. Sony’s US subscription page listed these prices on August 18, 2026; the subscription renews automatically until canceled.

| Premium term | US price listed August 18, 2026 |
|---|---|
| One month | $19.99 |
| Three months | $54.99 |
| 12 months | $159.99 |
Check Sony’s US PlayStation Plus page for the current price and terms; prices and promotions can change. The standard Portal has historically had a US MSRP of $199.99, but its live price, colors, stock, and bundles can vary. For a new buyer, the approximate first-year baseline is $359.98 before tax: $199.99 hardware plus $159.99 for 12 months of Premium, assuming those standard prices and no promotion. Someone who already owns Portal does not need to buy the hardware again.
Premium also includes benefits beyond Portal streaming, but the subscription is a substantial recurring cost if cloud play is your only reason to join. If you mainly use Remote Play from your own PS5, Premium is not required for that feature.

- Try a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection or a newer Wi-Fi network, and play closer to the router.
- Pause large downloads and heavy video streaming on the same network while testing.
- Test the Portal in the room where you expect to play; a speed result near the router may not reflect conditions elsewhere.
- If an image looks poor or controls feel delayed, try another Wi-Fi band or time of day, then compare with Remote Play from your own PS5 if available.
Meeting Sony’s minimum speed figures does not guarantee low latency. Portal is a wireless client rather than a normal wired Ethernet endpoint, so router placement and local Wi-Fi conditions are especially relevant.
When it makes sense—and when it doesn’t
A good fit
- You already own Portal and want quick access to eligible games without downloading them to a PS5.
- You have Premium and a stable connection where you plan to play.
- You want to stream a supported game while your PS5 is off or being used by another account.
- You are a digital PS5 player whose games include titles that Sony currently marks as streamable.
A poor fit
- You expect every PS5 game, physical disc, PS4 game, or PS3 game to work.
- You want offline play, local installations, or dependable gaming without broadband.
- Your connection is unstable, or you are especially sensitive to streaming latency.
- You do not want to pay for Premium or depend on a changing catalog and Sony’s streaming service.
- You mainly own physical games and expect those purchases to unlock cloud play.
For a buyer who wants locally installed portable games and offline play, a device such as Steam Deck follows a different model: it runs supported PC games locally, but it does not provide Portal’s native PlayStation cloud catalog. Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW are separate streaming ecosystems with their own game access and subscription rules; neither streams PlayStation purchases. A phone or tablet with a controller can be a lower-cost screen for PlayStation Remote Play, though it does not have Portal’s integrated controls or necessarily the same dedicated cloud-streaming experience.
If a game is missing or a session fails
The game does not appear
- Confirm that the game is an eligible PS5 title, rather than a PS4 version or a physical-disc entitlement.
- Check that you are signed into the account that owns the eligible digital game or Premium subscription.
- Verify that Premium is active and Cloud Streaming is available in your account region.
- Check the current game finder: catalog availability and cloud eligibility can change.
The session will not start
- Install Portal system software updates, then confirm account sign-in and Premium status.
- Check Wi-Fi and whether upload and download speeds meet Sony’s minimums.
- Check PlayStation service status if account and network checks do not resolve the issue.
The stream lags or looks poor
Try closer to the router, reduce other network traffic, or test another Wi-Fi band and time. If you have a PS5, Remote Play can be a fallback for a game installed on that console, though it uses your home network and is a different mode.
