PlayStation Portal is not an offline handheld. It streams compatible games either from a PS5 using Remote Play or, for select titles, directly from Sony’s cloud-streaming service. Remote Play requires your PS5 to be online and available; cloud streaming can work without it, but requires PlayStation Plus Premium and is limited by game, account, and regional eligibility.
Which PlayStation consoles and games work with Portal?
For Remote Play, Portal connects to a PlayStation 5—not a PS4. The game runs on your paired PS5 and is streamed to the device. Compatible installed games are available, subject to game-specific exceptions: PlayStation VR or VR2 games and titles that require certain peripherals may not work. PS5 media apps on the Media tab are not supported through Remote Play. Sony’s Portal compatibility and setup guidance has the current details.

What are Portal’s two streaming modes?
| Question | Remote Play | Cloud streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | On a compatible game installed on your paired PS5. | On Sony’s service, for select eligible PS5 games. |
| Does the PS5 need to be available? | Yes. It must be on or able to wake from Rest Mode. | No, for eligible cloud-streamed titles. |
| Subscription requirement | No general PlayStation Plus Premium requirement for Portal Remote Play is stated by Sony. A game’s own online multiplayer may have separate membership rules. | An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership is required. |
| Game selection | Compatible games installed on your PS5. | Select titles only; catalog and regional availability can change. |
Cloud streaming is a separate service, not a way to make every PS5 game available without a console. Sony’s cloud-streaming information links to current eligibility and game-finding details.
Can I play PS5 games on Portal without a PS5?
Yes, but only through cloud streaming for eligible games. You need PlayStation Plus Premium, a supported account and region, and an eligible title. Sony says cloud streaming is not available to child accounts. The PS5 itself does not need to be switched on or available for this mode. Check Sony’s live cloud-streaming eligibility page because supported regions and the catalog may change.

Can I use PlayStation Portal offline?
No. Portal streams gameplay and needs Wi-Fi with an internet connection; it does not download games for offline play. Remote Play additionally needs the paired PS5 online and either powered on or configured to wake from Rest Mode. Cloud streaming removes the need for an active PS5 only when the game and account qualify—it still requires an internet connection.
What internet speed does Portal need?
Remote Play
Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for Remote Play and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These figures are service guidance, not a guarantee: stability, latency, congestion, and Wi-Fi quality also affect play. See Sony’s Remote Play requirements.

It recommends 23 Mbps for 1080p, 38 Mbps for 1440p, and 52 Mbps for 2160p on its US service page. The minimums and recommendations are different thresholds; available resolution can depend on service and device conditions. Consult the live cloud-streaming requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I set up Remote Play from a PS5?
- Connect the PS5 to the internet, update its system software, and sign in using the same PlayStation account you will use on Portal.
- On PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- To connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Connect Portal to Wi-Fi, sign in to the same account, and select the PS5 to start Remote Play.
Sony recommends connecting the PS5 to the network by Ethernet when possible. If both devices use Wi-Fi, Sony recommends the same network and a 5 GHz connection for Portal. Disabling band steering may help if it disrupts the connection; these are recommendations, not performance guarantees. See Sony’s setup instructions.

Does PlayStation Portal work on hotel or public Wi-Fi?
It can, provided the network offers broadband Wi-Fi and its sign-in process is supported. Sony says Portal software version 3.0.1 or later supports select public networks that require additional validation. You need a phone or tablet to complete the sign-in steps, and Portal’s initial setup must first have been completed on home Wi-Fi. Public network quality and login restrictions vary, so update and test Portal before relying on hotel Wi-Fi during a trip. Sony describes public-network support in its system software update history.
What audio devices can I use?
You can connect compatible wired headphones or earbuds through Portal’s 3.5 mm audio jack, or use PlayStation Link wireless audio products such as PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset. These are optional; audio accessories are not required to stream games. Sony’s Portal support page lists supported audio options. The device manual identifies Wi-Fi as IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and PlayStation Link as 2.4 GHz; instructions may vary by system software version: PlayStation Portal quick start guide.
