For a steadier start in Vampire Survivors, pick two or three offensive weapons, focus on leveling them, and stay alive rather than rushing every pickup: Steam’s official beginner tips say gems and items will not disappear. A typical weapon evolution needs a fully leveled weapon, its matching passive item, and an eligible Treasure Chest—but there are exceptions, so treat the examples below as a starting point rather than a complete catalog.

What should I do in a beginner run?

Build a manageable set of weapons

It is tempting to take every appealing weapon. Steam’s beginner advice is to start with two or three offensive weapons and level them one at a time. That is a developer-storefront recommendation, not a universal build rule; the practical idea is to strengthen the weapons you have chosen instead of spreading upgrades across too many options. Steam’s Vampire Survivors page provides the beginner tips.

Keep moving; collect at your pace

Steam says gems and items do not disappear. You can therefore prioritize dodging threats and circle back for those pickups rather than risking a hit to collect each one immediately. This advice applies to the gems and items covered by the official page; it should not be assumed to describe every special pickup or game mode.

Experiment with power-ups

Steam recommends Armour and Luck as reasonable starting power-ups and says power-ups can be refunded for free. Try an investment, see whether it suits your runs, and refund or adjust it if you want to experiment with another setup. These are suggestions, not mandatory upgrades.

How do weapons and passive items work?

A weapon is an active attack; a passive item gives a separate bonus and may also be required for an evolution. Weapons take up slots, so when choosing what to build around, consider whether its attacks reliably hit nearby threats, whether it depends on aiming or positioning, which passive its evolution uses, and whether you want to spend a slot leveling it. These are practical decision factors, not results from comparative testing or a universal ranking.

The weapon reference describes many weapons and special cases. The two pairs below illustrate the common pattern, but are not a complete base-game or DLC combination chart. The weapon reference is community-maintained and its crawl was about three months old when reviewed on October 7, 2026; check a current in-game or maintained reference before relying on an unfamiliar combination.

How to evolve a weapon

For a typical evolution, first bring the base weapon to its maximum level, carry its corresponding passive item, then open a Treasure Chest eligible to award an evolution. Having the right items does not mean every chest will necessarily produce one, and not every weapon evolves. Special items and other cases can follow different requirements, so verify the specific weapon rather than treating this pattern as a guarantee.

  1. Choose a weapon to evolve. Check that it has an evolution before committing a weapon slot and upgrade choices to it.
  2. Take its matching passive item. The Whip and Hollow Heart, for example, are one representative pair.
  3. Max out the base weapon. An under-levelled weapon does not meet the usual evolution requirement.
  4. Open an eligible Treasure Chest. A chest can award the evolution when the usual requirements are met; eligibility and special-case rules matter.

Where can I check what to unlock next?

Use the in-game Unlocks section as a checklist: choose a listed criterion and make that your next goal. This navigation tip comes from community guidance in a discussion about the collaboratively maintained wiki, rather than a captured developer statement. The post is available at the community discussion.
