Neither setup is a standalone console: both stream from a PlayStation, and the connection quality depends on your network.
How the two Remote Play setups work
PlayStation Portal
Portal streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5 over Wi-Fi. It has integrated PlayStation-style controls, but it is not a standalone PS5 console. The PS5 needs a broadband connection and must be on or in Rest Mode. See PlayStation’s Portal product information.

Phone and controller
The PS Remote Play app connects a compatible phone or tablet to a PS4 or PS5. You can use supported controller hardware or on-screen controls. Sony lists a PlayStation account, a compatible console and a high-speed connection among the requirements. Its Remote Play overview and mobile Remote Play guide describe supported devices and setup.

| What matters to you | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want a dedicated handheld-style device | Portal | Its controls are built in, so you do not need to attach a phone to a separate controller. |
| You already own a compatible phone and controller | Phone and controller | You can use existing equipment rather than adding a dedicated Remote Play device. |
| You want to connect to a PS4 | Phone and controller | Remote Play supports compatible PS4 and PS5 consoles; Portal requires a PS5. |
| You want the option of playing away from Wi-Fi | Phone and controller | Sony says phone Remote Play can use mobile data as well as Wi-Fi. Mobile data use counts against your plan. |
| You want fewer separate pieces to handle | Portal | The screen and controls are integrated in one device. |
These are practical differences, not a measured performance ranking. The official guidance reviewed does not establish that Portal or a phone has universally lower latency, better image quality, greater comfort or longer battery life.

What internet speed do you need?
PlayStation lists a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps for both Portal and Remote Play, and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. The official pages reviewed do not state a publication year for these figures. Sony also cautions that network conditions affect quality, so meeting a speed figure does not guarantee smooth play.

| Minimum speed | 5 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| Recommended for a better experience | At least 15 Mbps | At least 15 Mbps |

Both setups need a reliable connection to the console. Phone Remote Play has the additional option of mobile data, which can use a significant amount of data and may trigger carrier charges or exceed your allowance. Check your plan before using it away from Wi-Fi. If play is unreliable, first identify whether the issue is the console’s connection, the device’s connection or the network between them; the published speed guidance alone does not show that buying a faster router will fix a particular problem.

Check console, game and controller compatibility
Console and game requirements
- Portal: Requires a PS5 and streams compatible games installed on that console. PlayStation says games requiring PS VR or PS VR2, certain additional peripherals, or PS Plus Premium streaming on PS5 are not compatible with Portal Remote Play.
- Phone: The Remote Play app can connect to a compatible PS4 or PS5, but individual games and required accessories can still limit play.
- Both: Neither option supports every game. Check the game’s requirements before choosing a setup. Portal’s haptics and adaptive triggers work only in games that support them.
Phone operating systems and controllers
Controller support depends on the device, its operating-system version and the controller model. Sony’s platform information lists DualSense support for iPhone and iPad on iOS 14.5 or later; Android phones and tablets on Android 12 or later; Mac on macOS 11.3 or later via Bluetooth; and Windows via USB. Sony lists DUALSHOCK 4 support across a wider range of supported platforms. Check the current platform footnotes and your phone maker’s specifications before relying on a specific combination.
Recommended Free Tools
Sony’s platform information lists Backbone One-PlayStation Edition compatibility for phones running iOS 15 or later and Android 10 or later. Treat those versions as a starting point, not a guarantee for every handset or regional edition; confirm the accessory’s current compatibility list for your phone.

How to decide
- Check your console. If you have a PS4 rather than a PS5, Portal is not an option; use a compatible device with the Remote Play app.
- Check what you already own. If your phone and a supported controller are compatible, try that setup before buying dedicated hardware. Touch controls are another option, though handling is different from using physical controls.
- Consider where you will play. Portal’s listed connection requirement is broadband Wi-Fi. Phone Remote Play can also use mobile data, subject to your carrier plan and data allowance.
- Check the games and accessories you rely on. VR-dependent games and games requiring certain peripherals are excluded, and Portal also has a limitation for games streamed on PS5 through PS Plus Premium.
- Choose for convenience, not an assumed quality advantage. Portal offers integrated controls and a dedicated device; a phone setup offers broader device flexibility. The official sources do not provide a controlled head-to-head test to establish a universal winner for latency or image quality.
