If your computer says a hard disk is failing, back up your data immediately and replace the drive. A repair scan cannot make a failing disk dependable, and it can make previously readable sectors inaccessible. The safest sequence is to copy irreplaceable files first, create a second recovery option when possible, verify both backups, install a compatible internal drive, and test the restored system before disposing of the old one. For a gaming PC, that includes save files, screenshots, recordings, configuration files, authentication or recovery keys, and any game data that is not synchronized to the cloud.
Why does a failing-drive warning require immediate action?
A drive-health warning is a prediction of hardware risk, not a routine maintenance reminder. Apple’s Disk Utility guidance says that when it reports a disk is about to fail, you should back up your data and replace the disk because the disk cannot be repaired. Microsoft’s critical-storage warnings cover degraded reliability, low spare capacity and a drive that has switched to read-only mode; its guidance is to back up the data and inspect the health details.

Stop unnecessary writes as soon as the warning appears. Do not install games, run updates, reorganize a large library or repeatedly reboot just to see whether the warning disappears. Seagate cautions that a repair scan on a disk with bad sectors can make data that was accessible beforehand inaccessible afterward. If the disk is making unusual clicking, grinding or repeated spin-up sounds, power it down after copying the most important files and consider professional recovery rather than continued experimentation.
What files should I back up before replacing the drive?
Start with files that would be expensive, impossible or emotionally painful to recreate. A game launcher can redownload a title, but it may not restore a local save, mod profile or custom control layout.

Windows Backup can save selected folders, settings, installed apps and Wi-Fi information through a Microsoft account. File History keeps versions of personal files on an external drive or network location. These are useful layers, but neither should be treated as proof that every game save or specialist application database is covered; inspect the actual destination.
A Windows Recovery Drive is recovery media for reinstalling or repairing Windows, not a personal-data backup. Microsoft explicitly states that the Recovery Drive does not include personal files, so create a separate copy of those files.

Where should the backup live?
Use at least one destination that is physically separate from the computer. An external USB hard drive is practical for a large game-save and media archive. Cloud storage provides an off-device copy and access from another device, but it depends on internet access, account security and enough storage capacity. A combination of an external drive and cloud storage protects against both a local hardware failure and loss or damage at the computer’s location.
Keep a removable backup disconnected when it is not actively being used. The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises storing removable media securely and disconnecting it because malware can affect attached drives. If you use an external drive for File History, eject it safely after the backup and reconnect it for scheduled versions rather than leaving it permanently exposed.
How do I make and verify a file backup?
- Prioritize irreplaceable data. Copy saves, personal files, recovery keys and account exports before less important downloads or game installers.
- Use a clear folder structure. Create folders such as
Game Saves,Documents,PhotosandRecovery Keyson the destination. Keep the original folder names inside them so restoration is unambiguous. - Copy rather than move. A copy leaves the source intact if the destination encounters an error. If the operating system reports read errors, copy the smallest, most valuable files first.
- Wait for the backup tool to report success. Do not unplug the destination while a copy window, File History job or cloud client still shows pending work.
- Open representative files from the destination. Browse several documents, launch a copied image, play a video and inspect at least one game save or configuration file. Microsoft specifically recommends browsing the external drive to verify copied files, then safely ejecting it.
- Make a second copy when the data matters. Keep it on a different medium or in cloud storage. A backup that exists only on the same failing computer is not a recovery plan.
For games, test more than the filename. A save can be present but unusable if its companion profile, permissions or directory structure is missing. If a launcher synchronizes saves, sign in and confirm that synchronization has completed; do not assume every title supports it.
Should I make a disk image or clone as well as a file backup?
Yes, when the old disk is still readable and you want to preserve the operating system, applications and settings. A file backup is easy to browse and restore selectively. A full-disk image or clone can reproduce a working installation, reducing reinstall time, but it demands compatible hardware and careful source-and-destination selection.

| Option | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| File backup to an external USB drive | Personal files, game saves and easy browsing | You must reinstall or migrate the operating system and applications separately. |
| Cloud backup or storage | An off-device copy and access from another device | It requires reliable internet access, account security and sufficient online capacity. |
| Full-disk image or clone to an internal SSD or HDD | Preserving Windows, applications and boot configuration | Hardware must be compatible, the target may be erased, and a wrong selection can destroy data. |
| Professional repair or data recovery | Physically failing, inaccessible or model-specific systems | Cost and availability vary; verify the provider and the service scope before surrendering the drive. |
Do not create the clone until the file-level backup has been validated. Seagate’s migration guidance recommends backing up the entire original disk and validating that backup before cloning. If the source is unstable, a clone attempt can fail and place additional stress on it; preserve the most important files first.
How do I choose a compatible replacement drive?
The exact replacement depends on the computer’s make and model. Match all of the following before ordering:
- Physical size: laptops commonly use a 2.5-inch bay, while desktops may use 3.5-inch bays or adapters. Measure the bay and check the mounting brackets.
- Interface and connector: SATA and other interfaces are not interchangeable without the correct hardware. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is a common direct-replacement category, but the model’s service manual remains authoritative.
- Capacity: choose enough space for the operating system, applications, current game library and free working space. Capacity alone does not prove compatibility.
- Boot and controller mode: firmware boot mode and storage-controller settings can affect whether a migrated Windows installation starts. Seagate notes that these settings may need to match the original configuration.
- Mounting hardware and firmware: check caddies, screws, spacers and any vendor-specific firmware requirements.
Write down the old disk’s capacity, partition layout and boot mode before removing it. If the computer has an encrypted volume, make sure you have the recovery key before changing hardware.
How do I clone the old drive without erasing the wrong disk?
- Validate the backup first. Open files from the backup destination and confirm that the cloning software or backup tool reported completion.
- Connect the target correctly. Install the new drive internally when possible. If the computer has only one internal bay, place the source drive in a suitable USB SATA enclosure temporarily, or connect it through another supported interface.
- Identify source and destination by model and capacity. Do not rely only on disk numbers such as “Disk 0.” A wrong choice can overwrite the only copy of your data.
- Review the partition preview. Many cloning tools require confirmation that existing partitions on the destination will be deleted. Stop if the preview shows the source and destination reversed.
- Start the clone and avoid interruption. Keep the computer powered, prevent sleep if the software requires it, and do not disconnect either drive.
- Shut down and change the boot drive. After completion, install the target internally and disconnect the old source for the first boot so the firmware cannot select the wrong disk.
- Check the boot mode and controller settings. If Windows does not start, compare firmware settings with the original configuration rather than repeatedly recloning.
Seagate warns that Windows cannot boot from a cloned disk connected as an external USB hard drive. Clone Windows to the internal SSD or HDD that will actually run the computer. An external enclosure is for temporarily connecting the source or for reading it after migration, not for the final Windows boot volume.

Power the computer off, disconnect external power and follow the manufacturer’s service instructions for removing the old drive. Avoid touching connector contacts, label the old drive and keep it until the replacement has passed testing. If the machine uses a removable battery, disconnect it as directed by the service manual.
On first boot, verify the result in this order:
- The firmware detects the new drive at the expected capacity.
- The operating system starts without an unexpected recovery-key prompt or boot error.
- Your user account, applications and game launchers open normally.
- Several files, game saves and settings are present and readable.
- A test game loads a local save and, where applicable, cloud synchronization completes.
- Windows or macOS reports normal storage health and the backup destination remains available.
Do not wipe or recycle the old disk immediately. Keep it offline as a short-term fallback until you have tested the replacement through normal use and confirmed that the backup can restore anything missing.

What if the replacement drive is not detected or Windows will not boot?
The firmware does not see the new drive
Shut down and reseat the drive, cable and caddy. Confirm that the replacement uses the correct physical size and interface, then check the manufacturer’s firmware or storage settings. If the drive still does not appear, test the connection with a known-compatible drive or consult the computer maker before assuming the new disk is defective.
The clone completes but the system enters recovery
Check that the new drive is installed internally and selected as the first boot device. Compare the original and new boot mode and controller mode; a mismatch can prevent a migrated installation from starting. Use the recovery environment only after confirming that the personal-data backup is safe.

Stop modifying the new installation and compare it with the verified file backup. Restore the missing folders rather than trying repeated repair scans on the old disk. For a damaged or inaccessible source, professional data recovery may be safer than further home repairs.
Games launch but saves do not
Check whether the title stores saves in a user profile, a hidden application-data folder or a separate launcher directory. Restore the complete save folder and preserve its permissions and structure. If cloud synchronization offers a conflict choice, select the copy you verified locally instead of blindly accepting an empty newer profile.
When should I stop troubleshooting and use a recovery professional?
Use a specialist when the drive is inaccessible, repeatedly disconnects, has severe physical symptoms, contains unique data or cannot be read long enough to complete a verified copy. A general computer repair shop may be able to replace hardware, but logical recovery and physical recovery are different services. Ask what diagnostic process is used, whether the original drive will be altered, what files can realistically be recovered and how your data will be protected.
If the data is irreplaceable, do not open the drive, freeze it, swap internal components or run repeated “repair” utilities. Those actions can reduce the chance of recovery. Preserve the drive in its current state and provide the specialist with the symptoms, warning messages and the date the problem began.

How can I reduce the impact of the next drive failure?
- Keep automatic versioned backups enabled for personal files.
- Maintain one disconnected or otherwise isolated copy and one off-device copy.
- Periodically restore a test file so a successful backup is demonstrated, not merely reported by software.
- Export recovery keys and authentication backups whenever accounts or encryption settings change.
- Record where each game stores local saves, especially for older titles and emulators.
- Monitor drive-health warnings and act on them before the disk becomes unreadable.
No backup method eliminates every risk. The practical goal is to ensure that one failing disk cannot remove both your files and the means to restore the computer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will replacing my hard drive delete my digital game purchases?
Purchases are normally associated with the platform or launcher account, so you can usually reinstall the games after signing in. Local saves, mods and screenshots may not return unless they were separately backed up or successfully synchronized.
Can I keep using the old drive as an external game drive?
Only after it passes health checks and contains no data you cannot replace. A drive that triggered an imminent-failure warning should be treated as untrusted; use it temporarily for recovery, not as the sole location for games or saves.
Do I need to back up a console before replacing its drive?
Yes. Console procedures differ by model, and some systems require account licenses, cloud-save synchronization or proprietary recovery media. Confirm the console maker’s backup and restore method before removing the original drive.
How much free space should the replacement drive have?
The replacement must at least accommodate the data or partitions being migrated, but practical capacity should also leave room for operating-system updates, game patches and temporary files. The computer model and the size of your current installation determine the minimum; there is no universal number.
