A single cartridge is not enough to obtain every species: version exclusives require trading, and some additional Pokémon require a Hoenn-based Generation III game. This guide explains those limits and the progression gates that determine what you can record, catch, and evolve.
What does “complete Pokédex” mean in FireRed and LeafGreen?
There are two relevant goals. The initial Kanto Pokédex covers 151 species. After you meet the post-game requirements, Professor Oak can upgrade it to National Mode, which lets the game record species beyond the Kanto list. The upgrade does not make every National Dex Pokémon available in your cartridge: version differences and the need to trade or use another Generation III game still apply. Pokémon Database’s FireRed and LeafGreen listing distinguishes the Kanto entries from species recorded after the National Dex becomes available.
The official game page describes the adventure as a return to Kanto, the region first explored in Pokémon Red and Blue. The Pokémon Company’s FireRed and LeafGreen page identifies the two releases and their setting.
How to unlock the National Pokédex
Oak upgrades the Pokédex after you have entered the Hall of Fame, have at least 60 Pokémon recorded as owned, and have visited One Island. All three conditions matter; reaching the Hall of Fame alone is not enough. The National Mode requirements describe this unlock and its limits.

- Enter the Hall of Fame by defeating the Pokémon League Champion.
- Record at least 60 Pokémon as owned. Seeing a Pokémon is not the same as owning it.
- Visit One Island, then speak to Professor Oak to receive the National Pokédex upgrade.
National Mode is also an evolution gate. Before the upgrade, an evolution into a species outside the Kanto Pokédex is blocked. After the upgrade, the game can support those evolutions where the required Pokémon and evolution method are available. The upgrade changes what the Pokédex can record; it does not supply missing Pokémon or remove version and trade requirements. National Mode details.
How to read availability and evolution information
A species appearing in an evolution family does not mean you can catch it directly in that version. For a reliable completion plan, keep these acquisition methods separate:
Rank #2
- Wild encounter: found in a location as a wild Pokémon.
- Gift or static encounter: received from a character or encountered at a fixed point rather than through an ordinary wild encounter.
- In-game trade: exchanged with a character inside the game.
- Evolution: obtained by evolving a Pokémon you already have. Check whether the evolution is locked until National Mode.
- Breeding: produced from compatible Pokémon after the relevant facilities and mechanics are available.
- External trade: obtained from another compatible game or player. This is necessary for version-exclusive Pokémon if you only own the opposite version.
These labels answer different questions: where a Pokémon can be found, how it can be obtained, and whether a particular cartridge can supply it without outside trading. Do not count a Pokédex entry as evidence that the species is locally catchable.
Why FireRed and LeafGreen do not have identical catch lists
Each version has exclusive species. To obtain an exclusive belonging to the other release, trade with a compatible game that has it. The available version-exclusive reference establishes that rule and lists exclusives for LeafGreen; it does not mean every National Dex species is catchable in either cartridge. Some species require access to a Hoenn-based Generation III game rather than a different FireRed or LeafGreen cartridge. National Mode is a necessary post-game step for recording beyond-Kanto species, but Hoenn trades have a further progression requirement: complete Celio’s Ruby/Sapphire quest. What the Sevii Islands add
The Sevii Islands are part of the games’ added adventure and provide locations beyond the main Kanto journey. The first three islands become accessible earlier; access to Islands Four through Seven is tied to Hall of Fame and National Dex progression. The Sevii Islands reference outlines the island access progression.

In the original Game Boy Advance releases, Navel Rock and Birth Island require event tickets. The Nintendo Switch release has a different stated provision: The Pokémon Company says the AuroraTicket and MysticTicket appear in the Bag after the player becomes Champion and enters the Hall of Fame. That Switch-specific information should not be applied retroactively to original GBA cartridges. The Pokémon Company’s Switch release and Pokémon HOME announcement.

No. FireRed and LeafGreen do not have a clock feature for time-of-day evolution, so Eevee cannot evolve into Espeon or Umbreon in-game. National Mode does not add that missing mechanic. A player seeking those species must obtain them through a compatible external source rather than evolving Eevee in these games. The National Mode reference notes the games’ relevant evolution limits.

What changes when you use the Switch versions?
Keep platform-specific details separate from the original GBA rules. The Switch announcement states that Pokémon can link with Pokémon HOME, but Pokémon transferred to HOME cannot return to the game. It also describes automatic ticket availability after Champion and Hall of Fame status for the Switch release; the original GBA versions instead used event tickets for Navel Rock and Birth Island. The Pokémon Company’s announcement.
Accordingly, decide which release you are playing before planning event encounters or transfers. Do not assume that a GBA-era ticket requirement or a Switch-specific HOME rule applies unchanged to the other version of the game.
