When a Pokémon game shuts down, the result depends on the game and on which part of your digital activity you mean. Your shared Pokémon Trainer Central login can remain active while the closed game’s server-stored progress, collection, friends list, or virtual currency becomes inaccessible. A successor migration exists only when Pokémon announces one, and it may cover selected items rather than the whole account. Purchases, refunds, and recurring subscriptions are separate issues governed by the game’s notice, the store that billed you, and local law.
The clearest examples show why there is no single Pokémon shutdown rule: eligible Pokémon TCG Online collection data can move to Pokémon TCG Live; Pokémon TCG Card Dex data had no export route; and Pokémon Rumble Rush could not be played even from an installed copy after service ended. Use the exact game’s regional notice as the authority before assuming that an account, save, or purchase will survive.

What does a Pokémon game shutdown actually affect?
A shutdown can affect four separate layers: the shared login, the individual game’s server data, digital goods attached to that game, and any subscription billed through an app store. Treating them as one “account” creates most of the confusion.
- Shared login: A Pokémon Trainer Central account or another linked identity may continue to work for other services.
- Game access: If authentication or gameplay servers close, an installed app may stop at login or fail completely.
- Progress and items: Saves, collections, decks, friends, avatars, and virtual currency are usually records on the game’s service, not files that the login automatically preserves.
- Payments: A one-time purchase, a remaining virtual balance, a refund request, and an auto-renewing pass are different claims with different procedures.
There is no published industry-wide figure for how many Pokémon players lose progress or money in a shutdown. The official notices instead describe each title’s dates, exclusions, and remedies.

Which Pokémon shutdown examples show the different outcomes?
These documented cases are not interchangeable. They illustrate the range of outcomes a player can encounter.
| Game or service | Service event | Account and data result | Purchases or playability result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon TCG Online | Servers closed June 5, 2023; Pokémon TCG Live launched globally June 8, 2023 | Eligible collection data can migrate with the same Pokémon Trainer Central login, subject to limits and exclusions | Some cards and accessories transfer; currencies, friends, saved decks, avatars, specified cards, and unopened products do not transfer as their original items |
| Pokémon TCG Card Dex | Service deactivated September 20, 2023 | Card Dex data was lost; no export or transfer route was offered | Pokémon pointed users to its Trading Card Database and to rebuilding a TCG Live collection with code cards from physical products |
| Pokémon Rumble Rush | Service ended under the July 21, 2020 closure notice | The notice does not establish whether individual login credentials were deleted | New installations and updates stopped; previously installed copies could not be played, and unused Poké Diamonds could not be used or redeemed |
| Pokémon TV | Service sunset; the FAQ describes a separate account-versus-service outcome | The Pokémon Trainer Central account remained available for other connected games, while account-tied watch history became inaccessible | It is an account illustration, not evidence that every closed game preserves its data |
How did Pokémon TCG Online data move to Pokémon TCG Live?
TCG Online is the strongest example of a planned successor migration, but it was a defined conversion rather than a complete backup. Players use the same Pokémon Trainer Central account to bring over eligible collection data. Pokémon Support’s sunset FAQ, maintained in 2026, says there is currently no migration deadline and that advance notice will be given if that changes.

What transferred?
- Up to four copies of each unique eligible Pokémon TCG card can transfer, according to Pokémon Support’s current FAQ.
- Many card sleeves, coins, and deck boxes transfer at no more than one of each item.
- Some earlier card series are excluded, and some cards may transfer but not be playable in the current Live format. Do not interpret historical “future update” wording as a guarantee of present-day playability.
What did not transfer as the original item?
Pokémon’s FAQ excludes in-game currencies, friends lists, saved decks, avatars, specified cards, and unopened products from direct transfer. Cards beyond the stated copy limits do not transfer and receive no Credits. Banned accounts do not migrate.
How were unopened products handled?
Unopened TCG Online products did not arrive in Live as unopened packs or decks. The sunset FAQ lists a tiered in-game allocation for eligible unopened items: 500 for 1–9 items, rising through the published tiers to 12,400 for 125 or more items. One official page calls this allocation “Crystals,” while a separately maintained migration FAQ calls it “Trainer Points”; because the pages conflict, describe it as the tiered allocation rather than assume a currency name. Neither page promises cash compensation for excluded products.
What should a TCG Online player save first?
Saved deck-list text could be exported locally before migration, and it did not transfer automatically. Export any deck information the game explicitly allows while the old service is still accessible, then sign in to Live with the intended linked account. A physical Pokémon TCG product’s code card may help build a Live collection, but a code does not recover excluded TCG Online items and can be redeemed only once; its Live reward may differ.

What happened to Pokémon TCG Card Dex data?
Card Dex followed the opposite path from TCG Online. Pokémon’s sunset FAQ states that the service was deactivated on September 20, 2023 and that “Pokémon TCG Card Dex data will not be exportable or transferrable in any way.” The app was a collection-tracking service, not TCG Online, so TCG Online’s migration rules never applied to it.
Pokémon suggested using its Trading Card Database and creating a new TCG Live collection with code cards from physical products. Those suggestions provide a way to start over; they do not restore Card Dex scans, notes, or collection history.
Can an installed Pokémon game still work after its servers close?
Not necessarily. Pokémon Rumble Rush is an explicit warning against treating an installed app as an offline copy: the official closure notice says, “You also cannot play any previously installed version of the app.” First-time installation and updates were unavailable, and unused Poké Diamonds could no longer be used or redeemed.
That result is specific to Rumble Rush. It does not prove that every Pokémon title with an offline mode will fail, nor does it prove that every title will keep working. Check the game’s own notice for authentication requirements, offline features, and whether downloaded content depends on a live service.
Does a Pokémon account stay open when one service ends?
Often it can, but an intact login does not preserve the closed service’s records. Pokémon’s Pokémon TV sunset information says the Pokémon Trainer Central account itself remained available for other connected games while watch history tied to the TV service became inaccessible. That distinction is useful when reading a game notice: “your account remains” may refer only to the identity, not to saves or entitlements inside the discontinued product.

Do not infer from Pokémon TV that a particular game will retain its data. Look for a statement about that game’s servers, save records, collection migration, and linked services.
What happens to purchases, virtual currency, refunds, and subscriptions?
Handle each payment question separately. A shutdown notice may stop new purchases without promising a refund for previous ones, and deleting an app is not the same as cancelling a recurring subscription.
One-time purchases and unused virtual goods
The cited United Kingdom Pokémon terms generally reject refunds for virtual content and compensation for unused virtual content when an account closes, while preserving rights that cannot legally be excluded under local law. Those terms are not a blanket statement of rights in the United States or elsewhere. Your game’s notice and the law in the country where you bought the content control the practical answer.
Refund requests
Preserve receipts, order numbers, and the date and item involved. Contact the game’s official support channel and, where appropriate, the app store or payment provider. Do not assume that a closed server automatically creates a refund entitlement or that buying a replacement product restores the old purchase.
Recurring passes
For Pokémon TCG Pocket, Pokémon says the premium pass is tied to the subscribing store account. Deleting the app or deleting save data does not automatically cancel renewal; cancellation must be managed in the applicable Apple or Google store account. TCG Pocket’s account-link and save-transfer features are device-continuity tools, not a promise that progress or purchases would survive a future service shutdown.

What should you do before a Pokémon game closes?
Start with the exact title and region. Then work through the notice rather than relying on a general Pokémon account assumption.
- Find the official end-of-service notice. Record the server-close date, last purchase date, region or edition covered, and any stated grace period.
- Identify the linked identity. Confirm the Pokémon Trainer Central, Nintendo, Google, Apple, or other account that the game actually uses. Do not create a new login before checking migration instructions.
- Read the migration scope. Look for eligible items, copy limits, excluded currencies, account-status restrictions, transfer deadlines, and whether the successor requires the same login.
- Export permitted data. Save deck-list text, screenshots, or other files only where the game expressly provides an export or where doing so does not violate its rules. TCG Online deck lists had to be exported before migration.
- Use or document remaining balances according to the notice. Check whether paid currency can be spent, converted, or redeemed before closure. Never assume an unused balance will become cash.
- Preserve purchase evidence. Keep store receipts, transaction IDs, subscription details, and correspondence in a location you can access after the app disappears.
- Cancel recurring billing in the billing store. Open the subscription-management page for the store account that charges you; uninstalling the app is not a cancellation step.
- Complete migration before any announced deadline. Sign in to the successor with the specified account and verify that the eligible collection or items appear. If the notice says no deadline currently exists, recheck the official page because that status can change.
What can you do if the shutdown already happened?
First determine whether the problem is a closed server, the wrong linked account, or a billing dispute. Try the successor game’s official sign-in path only if a migration was announced; repeatedly reinstalling the old app cannot recreate server data.
- For TCG Online, check that Live uses the same Pokémon Trainer Central account and review the migration exclusions before contacting support.
- For Card Dex, do not expect an export after September 20, 2023; the official position was that its data could not be transferred.
- For Rumble Rush, an installed copy cannot be used as a recovery method because the closure notice expressly says previously installed versions cannot be played.
- For an unfulfilled charge or continuing subscription, contact the game’s support team and the billing store with your preserved receipt. The store can address billing mechanics; it cannot restore a closed game’s server records.
Be wary of anyone offering a paid “account recovery” service for a discontinued server. Official support and the original payment channel are the only reliable places to verify a migration or transaction remedy.

Use the same questions for each title, but expect different answers.
- Does the shared login survive, and can it still be used in other Pokémon services?
- Can the old game launch or play without its servers?
- Is there an announced successor, export, or migration deadline?
- Which saves, cards, cosmetics, currencies, friends, and unopened products are eligible, and what limits apply?
- What happens to unused paid currency and one-time purchases?
- Is a subscription billed separately through an app store?
- Which country, platform, edition, and terms govern the transaction?
Applying those axes explains why TCG Online’s partial migration, Card Dex’s complete data loss, and Rumble Rush’s inability to launch are all consistent outcomes rather than contradictions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recover Pokémon TCG Card Dex data from my phone backup?
The official Card Dex sunset information says the data was not exportable or transferable in any way. A device backup may preserve app files, but it is not an announced recovery route for the service’s collection records.
Will changing my email address move a closed Pokémon game’s progress?
No general rule links an email change to game-data recovery. Migration instructions normally identify the specific linked account or sign-in method; use that identity exactly and ask official support before changing account details.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can Pokémon Support restore items that exceeded TCG Online’s transfer limits?
The TCG Online sunset FAQ says cards beyond the stated limits do not transfer and receive no Credits. Support can clarify an account or eligibility error, but the published migration terms do not promise restoration of excluded items.
Does cancelling a premium pass refund the unused days?
Cancellation usually stops the next renewal rather than reversing time already purchased, but the applicable store’s terms and local law determine any refund. Check the subscription receipt and store policy instead of assuming the game’s shutdown notice settles it.
