Gigantamax is a special kind of Dynamax in Pokémon GO. Both temporarily enlarge an eligible Pokémon during a Max Battle, but only Gigantamax adds a species-specific visual redesign and a fixed G-Max attack. Ordinary Dynamax Pokémon use a Max Move whose type follows the Pokémon’s Fast Attack, while a G-Max attack can have a different type without changing the Pokémon’s own typing.
The distinction affects which specimens you can collect, how their attacks work, how large a battle lobby may be, and what you can do with a caught Pokémon afterward.

What is the difference between Dynamax and Gigantamax?
Dynamax is the base transformation: an eligible Pokémon becomes enormous for a short period in a Max Battle. Gigantamaxing adds two things to that same framework—an individual visual form and a species-specific G-Max attack. The official Pokémon GO guide describes it directly: “Gigantamaxing is a kind of Dynamaxing that certain Pokémon can undergo.”
Gigantamax is therefore not a separate replacement for Dynamax and not a simple level of increased statistics. A Gigantamax-capable specimen still uses the Max Battle meter, can use the shared defensive and healing moves, and transforms for the same three turns after the meter fills.

Pokémon GO’s official Max overview explains the battle system and transformation rules at the Max Pokémon Battle guide.
How do their appearances differ?
A Dynamax transformation makes the Pokémon much larger while retaining its familiar design. Gigantamax does that and also changes the model in a form associated with that species. The redesign is the visible clue that you are looking at Gigantamax rather than ordinary Dynamax.

It is not something every member of an eligible species receives automatically, and a normal Dynamax specimen cannot be upgraded into Gigantamax simply by powering it up or teaching it a different move.
When the battle ends, neither form remains permanently enlarged in your storage view. The caught Pokémon is presented normally, with its Max capability recorded on the individual specimen. You must enter a Max Battle to see the transformation again.
How do Dynamax and Gigantamax attacks work?
The offensive move is the most important mechanical difference. Ordinary Dynamax uses a Max Move whose type is determined by the Pokémon’s Fast Attack. Gigantamax instead uses that species’ G-Max attack, which can use a different type from the Fast Attack.
Ordinary Dynamax Max Moves
If an ordinary Dynamax Pokémon has a Fire-type Fast Attack, its corresponding offensive Max Move follows that type. Teaching the Pokémon a different Fast Attack with a Fast TM or Elite Fast TM can change the corresponding ordinary Max Move’s type.
That move interaction does not create Gigantamax capability. A Fast TM changes the attack available to an ordinary Dynamax specimen; it does not add a species-specific G-Max move or alter a fixed G-Max attack.
Gigantamax G-Max attacks
A Gigantamax specimen has a distinctive G-Max attack tied to its species. The G-Max attack’s type can differ from the Pokémon’s Fast Attack, but the Pokémon itself does not change type when it transforms. For example, a G-Max move having a different elemental type is a move property, not evidence that the Pokémon has gained a second type.
Max Guard and Max Spirit
Both forms can use Max Guard to reduce incoming damage and Max Spirit to heal. Candy and Max Particles are used to train Max Moves, so the same resource system supports both Dynamax and Gigantamax teams.
Move training is separate from form eligibility. Investing Candy and Particles can make a specimen more useful in Max Battles, but it cannot turn an ordinary Dynamax specimen into a Gigantamax one. Likewise, a G-Max attack remains the species-specific attack even if you change the specimen’s ordinary Fast Attack.
How does a Max Battle work?
Max Battles are held at Power Spots rather than ordinary raid locations. Power Spots can move or expire, so a boss shown at one location may not remain available indefinitely. Check the Power Spot’s timer and the event notice before traveling or planning a second attempt.

Only Max-capable Pokémon can enter. The Help Center describes selecting up to three Pokémon for a party, so build a small team rather than expecting to bring a full six-Pokémon raid roster. During the encounter, the Max meter fills as the battle progresses. Once it is full, the selected Pokémon transforms and remains Dynamax or Gigantamax for three turns.
Those three turns are the key window for spending Max actions. You can deal damage with the offensive move, reduce incoming damage with Max Guard, or restore teammates with Max Spirit. The choice is shared by both forms; Gigantamax does not receive a longer transformation or a separate meter.
Max Particles are deducted when the boss is successfully defeated. If the group fails, the particles have not been spent on a successful clear, allowing another attempt while the Power Spot remains open. A retry is not guaranteed indefinitely, however, because the spot can close or move.
Who can enter a Max Battle?
Max Battles take place at Power Spots. Only Pokémon capable of participating in Max Battles can be selected, and the Help Center describes choosing up to three Pokémon for a party. Power Spots move and expire, so an encounter may not remain available indefinitely.
Standard Dynamax encounters
Regular Dynamax battles are presented as encounters for up to four players. That is a lobby scale, not a promise that four people are required for every boss; the number needed depends on the boss and the preparation of the participating teams.
Gigantamax encounters
Gigantamax events can support up to 40 Trainers, organized into groups of four or fewer. The 40-Trainer figure is the current general guidance from Pokémon GO’s broader Max material and The Pokémon Company’s July 8, 2025 guide. An older Help Center comparison sentence mentions 20 Trainers, so treat a specific event’s in-game notice as the authority when its rules differ.
A large lobby is not a minimum. Stronger Gigantamax bosses generally call for more coordination and better-trained Max Moves, while a smaller group may succeed against a less demanding encounter. The lobby capacity also does not mean all 40 Trainers fight as one undivided party; the published structure uses groups of four or fewer.

How are Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon obtained?
You obtain either form by participating in an eligible Max Battle and catching the boss afterward. Gigantamax Pokémon can also be received through a Special Trade. A species being known to have a Gigantamax form does not mean every specimen you catch will have that capability, so check the individual Pokémon rather than relying only on its species name.
There is no universal list that makes every member of an eligible species Gigantamax-capable. The form is attached to particular specimens, which is why two Pokémon with the same species name can have different Max options. Inspect the individual entry before transferring, trading, or spending resources.
What happens after you catch one?
Caught Max Pokémon appear in storage in their ordinary, non-enlarged presentation. Their Max transformation and Max Moves are for Max Battles; they cannot use those features in Trainer Battles.
Some Gigantamax Pokémon cannot evolve because their evolved form does not have a corresponding Gigantamax form. Pokémon GO also blocks transfers of Gigantamax Pokémon to Pokémon HOME. The Help Center states: “Gigantamax Pokémon are not able to be sent to Pokémon HOME.”

Do Max Particles work differently for the two forms?
No. Max Particles support the same Max Move training system for Dynamax and Gigantamax. The important distinction is between a daily collection allowance and the amount you can hold: the Help Center gives a baseline of 800 Max Particles collected per day and 1,500 held at one time.
Those figures are not permanent descriptions of every event. During the October 3, 2026 Gigantamax Cinderace event, Pokémon GO raised the event collection limit to 1,600. That was an event bonus, not a new permanent daily limit or a change to storage capacity.
Particles are deducted when a boss is successfully defeated. If the group fails, you can retry before that Power Spot closes without having spent the particles on a successful clear. Because Power Spots expire or move, a failed attempt still has a practical time limit.

Pokémon GO also mentions purchasable Max Particle packs. No universal price should be assumed: availability and pricing can depend on the shop and the event. You can plan around the published collection and storage limits without treating a purchase as a requirement for every battle.
Are Gigantamax battles harder than Dynamax battles?
Gigantamax encounters are generally presented as the more demanding battle format, but there is no published universal damage multiplier, catch-rate difference, or win-rate statistic establishing a fixed difficulty gap. The practical signal is the event’s boss rating, lobby size, and recommended coordination—not a claim that every Gigantamax boss is always harder than every Dynamax boss.
For context, the official 2026 Gigantamax Cinderace notice labeled that featured encounter six-star. A separate October 24, 2026 event labeled Dynamax Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf five-star and assigned them to different world regions. Those event labels illustrate how Pokémon GO has presented particular encounters; they are not a permanent star-rating rule or a statement about what is spawning now.
The Cinderace event information is documented in Pokémon GO’s notice at the October 3, 2026 event announcement. Always check the current notice for the boss, date, region, lobby rules, and any temporary particle bonus.

Can a normal Dynamax Pokémon become Gigantamax?
No. Gigantamax eligibility belongs to particular specimens of certain species. Powering up a normal Dynamax Pokémon, changing its Fast Attack, or training its Max Moves does not grant the Gigantamax form.
The reverse confusion is also common: a Gigantamax Pokémon is still part of the Dynamax system. It uses the same Max meter, the same three-turn transformation window, and the same Max Guard and Max Spirit tools; its extra features are the appearance and G-Max attack.
What should I prepare before a Max Battle?
Preparation is shared across both forms, with additional coordination usually needed for a Gigantamax boss.

Which claims about Dynamax and Gigantamax are wrong?
- “Gigantamax is just a bigger stat boost.” The defining additions are the species-specific visual form and G-Max attack; no universal extra-stat figure is established here.
- “Every Pokémon of an eligible species can Gigantamax.” Capability belongs to particular specimens.
- “Changing the Fast Attack creates Gigantamax.” A Fast TM can affect an ordinary Dynamax Max Move’s type, not the Pokémon’s form.
- “A different G-Max move type changes the Pokémon’s type.” Transformation does not change the Pokémon’s type.
- “The event particle allowance is the permanent daily cap.” The 1,600 limit in the Cinderace event was temporary; baseline collection and storage limits are separate figures.
- “Max Pokémon can use their moves in Trainer Battles.” Their Max transformation and Max Moves are restricted to Max Battles.
- “Pokémon GO Max Battles are the same as Sword and Shield Max Raid Battles.” They share the broader Dynamax/Gigantamax idea but are different game systems and should not be used as interchangeable evidence.
- “A 40-Trainer lobby means 40 people are needed.” It is a maximum capacity for the event format, not a guaranteed minimum to win.
How do Pokémon GO’s forms differ from cards and other Pokémon games?
The trading-card game uses VMAX cards as a separate card-game mechanic. The original Sword & Shield TCG expansion included four Pokémon VMAX, but that is a card-set figure, not a Pokémon GO statistic. A physical Pokémon GO card collection cannot unlock a Gigantamax transformation in the mobile game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe official Pokémon GO card expansion features Melmetal VMAX in Gigantamax form. Booster packs are offered through special collections rather than as separately sold packs, and a particular collection should not be assumed to contain a specific Melmetal card. This is a collectible option, not a gameplay requirement.
Likewise, Sword and Shield’s Max Raid Battles are distinct from Pokémon GO’s Power Spot Max Battles. A Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield Nintendo Switch game lets players experience the Galar mechanic in that separate game, but its raid rules, availability, party systems, and move behavior do not transfer to Pokémon GO.
Pokémon GO Plus + is also not a dependable Max Particle strategy. A November 2026 event announcement explicitly excluded particles from catches made with that accessory, showing that accessory behavior can be event-specific.

Can a Pokémon with a G-Max move be used normally outside Max Battles?
Yes, it remains a regular Pokémon in storage and in ordinary game systems, but its Max transformation and Max Moves are not available in Trainer Battles. The G-Max capability does not turn the Pokémon into a permanently enlarged battle form.
Are VMAX cards the same thing as Gigantamax Pokémon in Pokémon GO?

How we picked the comparison points
The comparison focuses on the differences that change a player’s decisions: visible form, specimen eligibility, offensive move rules, shared Max tools, ways to obtain a specimen, and the coordination scale of the battle. It separates general system rules from temporary event announcements and avoids unsupported claims about damage, catch rates, or win percentages.
