How to encounter the Galarian birds
Daily Adventure Incense is the relevant encounter method established by Niantic’s official guidance. Its FAQ confirms that Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres can appear while the incense is active. Niantic’s sources do not establish a separate reliable wild encounter method for these birds.
Movement is essential: Niantic says incense-attracted wild Pokémon appear while you are moving. Choose a safe route, activate the incense, and keep walking during its 15-minute duration. Standing still does not meet the stated condition.
Use Daily Adventure Incense effectively
- Check that it is available. Find Daily Adventure Incense in your Item Bag or on the map. It is granted at midnight local time, and you can carry only one at a time. The current Help Center says it is unavailable from 11:45 p.m. until midnight local time.
- Pick a safe route. Choose a place where you can walk continuously while still paying attention to traffic and your surroundings.
- Activate it and keep moving. The incense lasts 15 minutes. Use it while walking; the Pokémon GO team says wild Pokémon are attracted while it is active so long as you are moving.
- Watch for a bird encounter. If one appears, decide whether to make an ordinary attempt or use a Master Ball.
If you have 30 or fewer Poké Balls, Great Balls, and Ultra Balls combined, activating Daily Adventure Incense can grant 30 Poké Balls. The grant requires available Item Bag space.

How to improve your catch attempt
Ordinary attempt
The Pokémon GO Help Center describes the three birds as difficult to catch and suggests using a Razz Berry. Niantic’s item guidance says Great Balls and Ultra Balls improve your ability to catch wild Pokémon, while curveball throws reduce the chance that a Pokémon breaks free. These are general improvements, not a guarantee, and Niantic does not publish a specific optimal throw strategy for the Galarian birds.
Guaranteed catch
A Master Ball has a 100% catch rate according to the Pokémon GO Help Center. Using one is a personal choice: it guarantees this catch, but it consumes a scarce in-game item.

What if a Galarian bird flees?
Niantic’s FAQ addresses birds that flee after the first throw and confirms that they are tough to catch. If one gets away, another Daily Adventure Incense arrives the next day, and another encounter may happen. That does not guarantee the same bird—or any bird—will appear on the next use.
Are there published odds?
Niantic’s official sources reviewed here do not state a numerical encounter rate for any of the three birds or an ordinary catch-rate percentage. Treat claims that give a precise chance as unverified unless they cite reliable evidence beyond these official sources.

Shiny availability: historical event context
During the Galarian Expedition, which ran October 4–11, 2024, local time, shiny Galarian Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres became possible through Daily Adventure Incense. Niantic’s event announcement said the incense encounter-pool update continued afterward. The 2024 event dates are historical; this was not a statement that the event is currently running.
