A Thousand-Year Slumber is a seven-stage Special Research quest that ends with a Jirachi encounter. This guide lists every task and reward, explains where progress can stall, and flags details that may differ in the current game client.
How to unlock A Thousand-Year Slumber
Sources disagree about the quest’s prerequisite: Serebii says you must complete A Ripple in Time, while Pokémon GO Hub says you need to reach at least Stage 3 of A Mythical Discovery. The Pokémon GO team announced Jirachi’s availability to all Trainers through Special Research but did not specify an unlock requirement. Check your Special Research tab to see whether the quest is available to your account; the current in-game listing is the best guide to your eligibility.

The quest debuted in August 2019. It is Special Research, not a timed event task, so the steps below describe its progression rather than a limited-time event schedule. The announcement is available from the Pokémon GO team. For background on Special Research, see the team’s research overview.

Complete each listed objective to advance. The task reference and walkthrough disagree on some XP values; where they conflict, check the reward shown in your game.

Stage 1 of 7
- Catch 25 Pokémon. The listed reward is 1,500 XP in Serebii and 1,000 XP in Pokémon GO Hub.
- Spin 10 PokéStops or Gyms to encounter Jigglypuff.
- Make 3 new friends to encounter Feebas.
Stage rewards: Mossy Lure Module, Glacial Lure Module, and Magnetic Lure Module.
Stage 2 of 7
- Catch 3 Whismur to receive 10 Whismur Candy.
- Evolve a Feebas to receive 1,500 XP.
- Earn a Gold Hoenn medal to receive 1,500 XP.
Stage rewards: 2,000 Stardust, 10 Poké Balls, and 3 Incense.
Stage 3 of 7
- Take a snapshot of Loudred to encounter Snorlax.
- Make 3 Great Throws in a row to receive 2,000 XP.
- Earn 3 Candies walking with your Buddy to receive 2,000 XP.
Stage rewards: 20 Silver Pinap Berries, 3 Star Pieces, and 2,000 Stardust.

Stage 4 of 7
- Catch 50 Psychic- or Steel-type Pokémon to receive 2,500 XP.
- Power up Pokémon 10 times to receive 2,500 XP.
- Send 10 Gifts to friends to receive 2,500 XP.
Stage rewards: 1 Charge TM, 1 Premium Raid Pass, and 1 Fast TM.
Stage 5 of 7
- Battle a Team Leader 3 times to encounter Kricketune.
- Win against another Trainer 7 times to receive 3,000 XP.
- Win 5 raids to receive 3,000 XP.
Stage rewards: 3 Rare Candy, 20 Ultra Balls, and 3,000 Stardust.
Stage 6 of 7
- Take 5 snapshots of Psychic- or Steel-type Pokémon to encounter Chimecho.
- Make 3 Excellent Curveball Throws to encounter Bronzong.
- Spin a PokéStop 7 days in a row. Serebii lists 3,000 XP for this task; Pokémon GO Hub and Nintendo Life list 4,000 XP.
Stage rewards: 10 Silver Pinap Berries, 10 Star Pieces, and 5,000 Stardust.
Stage 7 of 7
- Claim reward 3 times. The tasks are auto-completed, and each claim gives 4,500 XP.
Final rewards: a Jirachi encounter, 20 Jirachi Candy, and the Jirachi T-shirt style in the in-game shop. If you already received Jirachi, the task reference says the encounter is replaced with Candy; the Pokémon GO team also confirmed Candy for players who caught Jirachi at GO Fest.
How to prepare for the tasks that can take longer
Keep the Feebas encounter for Stage 2
Stage 1 gives you a Feebas encounter, and Stage 2 requires you to evolve a Feebas. If you can, keep that encounter available rather than transferring the Pokémon before you know you have a suitable one. Pokémon GO Hub says evolving Feebas requires walking 20 km with it as your Buddy. Because evolution requirements can change, check Feebas’s live evolution screen before planning around that distance.
Choose a convenient Buddy for the Candy task
Stage 3 requires 3 Candies from walking with your Buddy. If you have a Pokémon with a shorter Candy distance, using it as your Buddy can make this objective quicker. The requirement is for Candy earned from walking, not a particular species.

Plan for Trainer battles and raids
Stage 5 asks for 7 wins against another Trainer and 5 raid wins. Arrange Trainer battles with someone who can play when you are available; the task does not require a particular opponent or battle format in the listed objectives. Raids may take coordination with other players depending on the raid, but the listed research does not establish that buying raid passes is necessary.
Protect the seven-day PokéStop streak
For Stage 6, spin a PokéStop on 7 consecutive days. The wording makes this a streak objective: missing a day means you must restart the consecutive-day count. Pick a stop you can reach reliably and make the spin part of your daily routine.
Finish the Jirachi encounter when you are ready
After the final stage, claim the three auto-completed rewards to reach the encounter. Nintendo Life reported in 2022 that backing out of the encounter allowed players to return through the research. That behavior is not guaranteed for every current client version, so confirm the encounter screen’s options before leaving it.

Why task details may differ between guides
The published references disagree on Stage 1’s Catch 25 Pokémon XP, Stage 6’s seven-day PokéStop XP, and the quest prerequisite. These are not different official quest paths established by the sources; they are discrepancies among guides. Use the current task and reward text in Pokémon GO when it differs from an older or third-party listing.
