To get Purified Gems in Pokémon GO, collect Shadow Shards from Team GO Rocket battles and combine four Shards in the Shard Refiner. In a Shadow Raid, use a Gem after the boss becomes enraged to help subdue it.
How to get Purified Gems
- Defeat Team GO Rocket Grunts, Leaders, or Giovanni in Pokémon Battles to collect Shadow Shards. The Pokémon GO Help Center lists these as sources for the pieces used to make Gems.
- Collect four Shadow Shards, then use the Shard Refiner to create one Purified Gem.
- Keep in mind that your inventory can hold up to 10 Purified Gems. These crafting and storage rules are stated in the Pokémon GO Help Center.
How to use a Purified Gem in a Shadow Raid
Purified Gems are for Shadow Raids; they are not an item for purifying a Shadow Pokémon in your collection. Wait for the Shadow Raid Boss to become enraged. When the Gem button appears at the bottom left of the battle screen, tap it to use one.

A Gem temporarily lowers an enraged boss’s attack and defense and helps subdue it, returning it to its non-Enraged state. One Trainer can use up to five Gems in a single Shadow Raid Battle. When other Trainers use Gems at the same time, their effects stack. These mechanics are described in the Help Center and the May 18, 2023 Pokémon GO announcement.
How to recognize a Shadow Raid
Shadow Raids take place at Gyms taken over by Team GO Rocket, and the raid boss is a Shadow Pokémon. The raid egg shows a purple flame; after it hatches, the Gym appears black on the map. A purple flame also marks the egg or boss in the Nearby menu. To join, enter the Gym and use a Raid Pass. See the Pokémon GO Help Center guide to Shadow Raids.
