It paired Kanto Pokémon encounters in different biomes with streak XP, faster friendship growth, shiny starter opportunities, featured evolution moves, Mega Energy tasks and free Special Research. The event has ended, but the announced Special Research does not expire.
When did Rediscover Kanto run?
The event was scheduled for Monday, April 22, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. through Thursday, May 9, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. PDT, according to Pokémon GO’s official event announcement. Those are the times stated for PDT; players elsewhere would need to account for their local time zone.

Rediscover Kanto was part of the broader 2024 Rediscover GO refresh, which updated the game’s visuals and highlighted exploration through environments such as forests, beaches, mountains and cities. Pokémon GO described the refresh as adapting visuals to real-world surroundings and seasons, with changes to the map, encounter screen and Trainer battle screen. See the Rediscover GO overview.
What were the event bonuses?
- Streak XP: Increased XP for completing a seven-day PokéStop spin streak and a seven-day Pokémon catch streak.
- Faster friendship growth: Friendship levels increased faster than usual when players opened Gifts, traded Pokémon or battled together in raids, Gyms or Trainer Battles.
- Shiny Kanto starters: The event announcement said shiny Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle had an increased chance of appearing in their respective biomes. It did not publish numeric odds.
Which Pokémon appeared in biomes?
The event encouraged players to explore biomes for Pokémon first discovered in Kanto. Pokémon GO associated Kanto Pokémon with specific biomes, but the announcement cautioned that they could also appear outside their associated biomes during some seasons or special events. Biome availability was therefore not exclusive, and the event page did not provide biome-by-biome encounter rates.

Evolving these middle-stage Pokémon during the event period could produce the following final evolutions with their featured Charged Attacks:

What Field Research and Special Research were available?
Event-themed Field Research
Event-themed Field Research could award Mega Energy for Venusaur, Charizard or Blastoise. The announcement did not list the individual task text or the amount of Mega Energy attached to each task.
Free Special Research
Free Special Research became available to all Trainers with the event. Its announced rewards included items, XP, Stardust and encounters with event-themed Pokémon. Pokémon GO said, “Special Research does not expire, so you can complete it at your own pace!” That means the research was described as lasting beyond the event window; whether a particular account or current game version displays every detail in the same way should be checked in game.
