If a Pokémon GO referral reward is missing, first check that the referred player was eligible and redeemed the code within 72 hours, then confirm both players are Friends and claim the completed milestone from the referred player’s Trainer Profile. Niantic says referral rewards must be claimed manually; they do not automatically appear in the Item Bag.
Check whether the referred player is eligible
Niantic’s referral rules allow referrals for new Trainers and players who have been inactive for at least 90 days. If the referred account does not meet either condition, it is not eligible for referral rewards.
Child accounts cannot send or redeem referral codes, even when parental or club services have enabled social permissions.
Check the code’s 72-hour redemption window
The referred player must redeem the code within 72 hours of creating an account or logging in. If they skipped the referral prompt at login, they can still redeem a code within that window:

- Open the Friend List.
- Tap Invite.
- Enter or redeem the referral code.
Niantic documents this 72-hour window as the opportunity to redeem a code; it does not establish a way to attach one retroactively after the window has passed.
Confirm you are Friends and have an open Friend List slot
After the code is redeemed, the referred player and referrer must be connected as Friends before milestone rewards can be claimed. The referrer should also receive an in-app confirmation that the player successfully joined or rejoined through the referral.

A full Friend List can prevent the connection and block milestone reward claims for both players. Remove a Friend to free a slot, then add the referred player.
Claim the milestone from the referred player’s Trainer Profile
Referral rewards are not automatically added to the Item Bag. To claim one, open the referred player’s Trainer Profile from your Friend List, check the milestone progress, and tap any milestone marked complete. An empty Item Bag by itself does not mean the referral failed.

Contact support if the documented checks pass
If the referred player is eligible, redeemed the code within 72 hours, is connected as your Friend, and has a completed milestone that still cannot be claimed, contact Pokémon GO support through the app for an account-specific review. Niantic’s referral guidance does not explain every case in which a valid referral fails to display a reward, so it does not establish a particular bug, outage, or guaranteed compensation.
