Prepare for a Pokémon GO Spotlight Hour by confirming the featured Pokémon, local start and end time, and active bonus; filling your item and Pokémon storage; choosing a single primary goal; and deciding whether Incense or a Lure Module is worth using. During the hour, spend as much of the window as possible catching the featured Pokémon. Afterward, appraise and sort the results before transferring anything.

What is Pokémon GO Spotlight Hour?
Spotlight Hour is a one-hour event that highlights one Pokémon. The featured species appears more frequently in the wild, creating a concentrated opportunity to catch it and build the Candy for its evolutionary family. The Pokémon GO Help Center describes it as “an event in Pokémon GO that highlights a specific Pokémon for a one-hour period.”
The format is consistent, but the important details are not universal. The featured Pokémon, active bonus, local start time, end time, shiny availability and practical spawn volume must be checked for each event. Do not assume that every Spotlight Hour has the same bonus or that an increased appearance rate guarantees a particular number of encounters.

How do I verify the event before it starts?
Open the current event information in Pokémon GO and compare it with the official announcement for that event. Confirm the five details below before spending items or clearing storage.
Featured Pokémon
Write down the exact species and, if relevant, its evolutionary family. Candy is tied to that family, so preparing for the wrong Pokémon wastes the hour even if the event is active.

Use the time shown for your account and location. Treat the event as a fixed one-hour window and plan travel, charging and any other interruption around it.
Active bonus
Some Spotlight Hours emphasize a resource or activity. Check the current listing instead of assuming that the bonus will be extra Candy, Stardust or experience.
Shiny information
Look for an event-specific statement about shiny availability or odds. The general Spotlight Hour description does not establish a universal shiny rate.
Spawn expectations
The official guidance confirms increased appearances of the featured Pokémon, but it does not promise a universal encounter count. Your surroundings, movement and available attraction items can affect how many catches you see.

Prepare the resources that remove interruptions, not a guessed number of items. The official Help Center says to “Stock up on Poké Balls and other catching supplies,” and specifically identifies Berries, Incense and Lure Modules as useful tools.

Poké Balls and Berries
Carry enough Poké Balls for the volume of encounters you intend to attempt, with a reserve for breaks in accuracy or a species that takes several throws. Berries can support a catch or increase the reward from a catch, depending on the Berry used. Check your supply shortly before the event rather than assuming yesterday’s inventory is sufficient.
Incense and Lure Modules
Set aside any Incense or Lure Modules you may use, but do not treat them as mandatory entry requirements. Their role is to attract more Pokémon to your location; the event itself supplies the featured-Pokémon focus.
Pokémon storage
Clear enough Pokémon storage before the first spawn. A full box turns a catching session into repeated transfer screens, which costs encounters during a one-hour event. Tag any specimens you may want to inspect later and decide in advance how ordinary duplicates will be handled.
Phone and route readiness
Choose a place where you can play safely and maintain a stable connection. If you intend to walk, decide the route before the event so navigation decisions do not replace catching time. Keep the device charged or bring the charging solution you normally use.
How do I choose the right Spotlight Hour goal?
Choose one primary objective before the event, then use secondary objectives only when they do not reduce progress on the first. Your goal determines which catches deserve Berries, how much storage you need and whether you should spend attraction items.
Regular Candy
For regular Candy, maximize the number of catches of the featured evolutionary family. Catching volume is the central resource: every successful catch contributes to that family’s Candy total, so avoid long inventory sessions while the hour is running.
Candy XL
Candy XL is separate from regular Candy and is specific to each Pokémon evolutionary line. The Help Center states that Candy XL can begin being collected at level 31 and is used to power Pokémon to higher CP than regular Candy permits. If you are level 31 or above, prioritize a high catch count and review eligible catches afterward; the event does not replace the other activities that can also produce Candy XL.

Stardust
Catch-focused play also supports a Stardust objective. The official Help Center says Stardust comes from catching or hatching Pokémon and from certain research and battling activities. During Spotlight Hour, catching the featured Pokémon is the activity directly aligned with the event, so avoid unrelated tasks unless they are part of a deliberate broader plan.
A keeper Pokémon
If your priority is a strong specimen, storage and evaluation rules matter more than maximum transfer speed. Reserve space, tag candidates and plan to appraise them after the event. Do not transfer a borderline catch simply to make room before you have applied your own keeper criteria.
Several goals at once
Rank the goals rather than trying to optimize all of them equally. A Candy-first plan favors uninterrupted catches; a keeper-first plan accepts more storage checks; an XL-first plan applies only if your account is eligible for Candy XL. Stardust is a useful secondary outcome because catching is already part of each of these plans.
Should I use Incense or a Lure Module?
Use Incense or a Lure Module when attracting additional Pokémon is worth the item cost and you can keep catching during its active period. The official guidance is to use both types of attraction item to help bring more Pokémon to your location, but it publishes no universal return rate.

When Incense makes sense
Incense is most useful when you will remain active and want encounters tied to your own play area. Decide before the event whether your route, connection and battery allow continuous catching; an item cannot recover time lost to a full storage box or an extended interruption.
When a Lure Module makes sense
A Lure Module is a location-based choice. It can be worthwhile where you can stay near the affected PokéStop and keep catching, especially if other players are also using that location. The official description supports its attraction role, not a guaranteed number of extra encounters.
When to save both
Save the items when supplies are limited, your play window is short or you cannot remain active. You still receive the featured-Pokémon event without either item; the attraction tools are an optional way to seek more encounters.

- Activate optional attraction items. If Incense or a Lure Module fits your plan, use it at the beginning of the window so the active period overlaps as much of the event as possible.
- Catch the featured Pokémon first. Prioritize the highlighted species over unrelated spawns, research administration and detailed appraisal.
- Use Berries deliberately. Apply them according to your goal and remaining supply. Do not consume the entire reserve early if you still have a long catching period ahead.
- Keep moving through encounters. When a catch is complete, return to the next available featured spawn instead of opening storage after every capture.
- Pause only for a necessary recovery. If storage or Poké Balls become the limiting factor, fix that problem quickly, then resume catching. Record promising candidates with a tag rather than performing a full evaluation mid-event.
What do Candy, Candy XL and Stardust mean for preparation?
These resources are related to catching but are not interchangeable. Decide which one matters before the event so your post-event review measures the right result.
- Regular Candy: belongs to a specific evolutionary family and is built primarily by catching members of that family during the hour.
- Candy XL: is a separate resource for the same evolutionary line, used for higher-level powering up. The Help Center identifies level 31 as the point at which players can begin collecting it and lists catching among its possible sources.
- Stardust: is not family-specific. The Help Center identifies catching and hatching, plus certain research and battling activities, as Stardust sources.
Because the official material does not publish an average Candy yield, Candy XL yield, Stardust yield or attraction-item return for Spotlight Hour, do not plan around an invented target number. Track the totals your account actually receives after the event.
How should I handle Shadow or Purified catches?
Apply a separate decision rule when the featured line is relevant to a Shadow or Purified collection. Shadow Pokémon require higher Candy and Stardust costs for powering up and for unlocking a second Charged Attack. That higher cost can change which specimens are worth retaining.
Also remember that Frustration normally cannot be removed with a TM except during special events. If a Shadow catch might matter to your collection, keep it until you have checked its moves, appraisal and the current rules for removing Frustration. Do not transfer it during the catching rush simply because it is a duplicate of the regular form.
What should I do after Spotlight Hour ends?
Reserve a short cleanup period immediately after the event. The goal is to convert a crowded capture list into a deliberate collection without accidentally deleting a useful specimen.
- Review tagged candidates. Appraise the catches that you marked during the hour and compare them with your keeper rule.
- Separate collection cases. Check whether any catch is needed for a Shadow, Purified, evolution, move or other collection purpose before treating it as an ordinary duplicate.
- Transfer confirmed duplicates. Transfer only after the previous checks are complete. This recovers storage for normal play and prevents the next event from starting with a full box.
- Record resource totals. Note the resulting regular Candy, Candy XL and Stardust so you know which goal actually benefited and can adjust the next event’s plan.
- Review unused supplies. Keep remaining Poké Balls, Berries, Incense and Lure Modules organized for ordinary play or a future event instead of spending them automatically.
What are the most common preparation mistakes?
- Assuming every Spotlight Hour is identical: The featured Pokémon and bonus change, and the official general description does not supply a permanent schedule or bonus table. Verify each event.
- Arriving with no storage space: Clear room and establish tags before the first spawn so transfers do not consume the catching window.
- Chasing shiny odds that were never announced: Increased wild appearance is not a published shiny guarantee. Use only the event-specific information available for that Pokémon.
- Spending all Berries immediately: Match Berry use to your goal and retain enough catching supplies for the rest of the hour.
- Using attraction items without an active plan: Incense and Lure Modules attract Pokémon, but their value depends on your ability to keep playing and on the supplies you have available.
- Transferring before checking: A fast cleanup is useful only after appraisal and collection checks, particularly for Shadow or otherwise unusual catches.

Does a Spotlight Hour guarantee a shiny Pokémon?
