Pokémon Legends: Arceus received favorable reviews overall, with critics especially welcoming its more active catching and exploration. The main reservations concerned its presentation, rough edges, and a slow opening. As of October 8, 2026, Metacritic displayed an 83 Metascore and OpenCritic an 83 score; those are separate services’ measures, not one combined rating.

What the critic scores say

The two major review aggregators show a favorable response, but their figures describe different systems and should be read separately.

Source Displayed result How to read it
Metacritic 83 Metascore from 125 critic reviews; 102 positive (86%), 16 mixed (14%), and zero negative (0%) Live page values checked October 8, 2026; review totals and scores may change.
OpenCritic 83 score, 86% recommended, 91st percentile OpenCritic’s separately defined display metrics, checked October 8, 2026; not directly interchangeable with Metacritic’s Metascore or review distribution.

The numbers point to strong consensus, not unanimity. An aggregate rating also cannot explain which design choices reviewers liked or where the game fell short.

What critics praised

A more active way to catch Pokémon

Reviewers often welcomed catching as a more involved activity, rather than treating it only as a prelude to a conventional turn-based encounter. GameSpot’s roundup describes critics responding positively to the changed catching approach and to the livelier feel of the world. OpenCritic’s review excerpts similarly reflect enthusiasm for the new direction, alongside reservations about its execution.

Exploration and a fresh take on the formula

The game’s more exploratory structure and movement through the world were recurring points of praise. Several reviewers saw these changes as a meaningful reinterpretation of the established series, rather than a minor variation on its familiar format. VGC reviewer Chris Scullion called it “the breath of fresh air the series has needed for so long” in GameSpot’s January 26, 2022 roundup.

GameSpot reviewer Steve Watts summarized the balance of innovation and pacing in his review: “Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a significant reimagining of what makes a Pokémon game, with an exciting level of flexibility that’s only slightly hampered by a slow early-game grind.”

What critics criticized

Visual and technical presentation

Some reviews raised concerns about the game’s visuals, technical presentation, or dated-looking elements. These are critical judgments reported in reviews, not the result of a technical test established here. The point of agreement is that presentation was a more common reservation than the central design changes.

A slow start and rough edges

Watts’s note about an early-game grind reflects a broader pacing caveat: the opening can take time to reach the flexibility that reviewers praised later. Other critical comments cited rough edges in gameplay or presentation. That variation helps explain why strong enthusiasm for the concept did not translate into universal praise for every aspect of the finished game.

How individual reviews fit the aggregate

Individual scores illustrate the range without standing in for the full critic sample. GameSpot rated the game 8/10; its roundup also lists VGC at 100/100 and Nintendo Life at 90/100. Those are examples from particular outlets, not a representative survey on their own.

Nintendo Life reviewer Jordan Middler described the game as “the result of Game Freak learning lessons for 25 years, refining the formula, and finally taking the franchise in a new, incredible, exciting direction,” as quoted in GameSpot’s roundup. Read alongside the criticism of pacing and presentation, that response captures the central split: critics could admire the ambition while still noticing the rougher parts of its execution.

Release context

Pokémon Legends: Arceus was first released on January 28, 2022, for Nintendo Switch. Game Freak developed it, and Nintendo and The Pokémon Company published it, according to GameSpot’s game hub.
