Rockstar has not announced a next-generation release date for Red Dead Redemption 2. The PS4 and Xbox One versions are playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility, but reports of a dedicated upgrade or Switch 2 release remain unconfirmed rumors.
Has Rockstar announced a next-gen release date for Red Dead Redemption 2?
No. Rockstar’s official backward-compatibility guidance and Take-Two’s FY2026 third-quarter release materials do not announce a new version or release date for Red Dead Redemption 2. Take-Two’s release lineup includes no next-gen RDR2 date; that omission does not rule out a future announcement.

What can you play on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S now?
Rockstar says the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Red Dead Redemption 2 can be played on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This is backward compatibility, not a separately announced current-generation edition. Rockstar’s guidance says digital owners can access compatible games through their console accounts; disc copies require a disc-enabled PS5 or Xbox Series X.

PlayStation’s US storefront lists the game as PS4 Standard Edition, with an original release date of October 26, 2018. It says the PS4 edition is playable on PS5 and notes that some PS4 features may be absent. Availability and storefront details can vary by territory and may change.

The rumor that plans may have shifted around the timing of Grand Theft Auto VI, or that an update might be held in a finished state, is speculation reported by RockstarINTEL—not a statement from Rockstar.

Does the 2025 Red Dead Redemption release mean RDR2 is coming?
No. Take-Two’s FY2026 third-quarter release lists the original Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare as released for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 on December 2, 2025. That is the 2010 game, not Red Dead Redemption 2. A current-generation release for the original does not confirm an upgrade or port for its sequel.
The same Take-Two lineup lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, but it gives no next-gen RDR2 release date. The lineup is not proof that a later RDR2 release cannot happen.

Want to play Red Dead Redemption 2 now?
You can play the existing PS4 or Xbox One edition on the compatible newer consoles described above. Buying that edition means buying the backward-compatible game—not a separately announced next-gen edition or a promised upgrade.
