You need the original Ultra Sun game as its base, and you should approach Alola as a preparation-heavy campaign: trials, Totem battles, route bosses and Team Skull fights use redesigned teams, custom gimmicks and, later, fully trained six-Pokémon squads. The current release ends immediately after Champion Hau, with postgame work still in progress.
The most reliable beginner plan is to build a flexible six-Pokémon core, maintain extra catches for rotation, inspect each major opponent before committing to a moveset, and spend the hack’s expanded training economy on targeted answers rather than relying on a fixed “story team.”

What Pokémon Neo Ultra changes
Neo Ultra keeps the Alola map, island sequence and broad adventure structure of Ultra Sun, then rebuilds the difficulty and Pokédex around stronger options and stronger opponents. VariantHoop describes it as “a difficulty hack of Ultra Sun that aims to create a fresh experience with its many new forms and complete Pokédex overhaul, almost every Pokémon has received a significant buff!” That description is important for setting expectations: this is not a cosmetic randomizer or a small balance patch. Familiar routes and trials remain recognizable, but the decisions you make between fights matter much more than in the base game.
- Base game: the original Pokémon Ultra Sun is the relevant prerequisite because Neo Ultra modifies it.
- Difficulty: trainers receive reworked teams, stronger move and held-item combinations, improved statistics and, from later islands onward, deliberate EV training.
- Boss structure: the project reports more than 50 main boss fights, with route bosses and minibosses supplementing the island trials.
- Pokédex and forms: every non-legendary Pokémon is available to catch, while more than 100 Neo Forms, 10 new Mega Forms, regional forms, a convergent species and two Paradox Pokémon expand the roster.
- Release boundary: the current build finishes immediately after the main story and Champion Hau; postgame development is still in progress.
Because exact patching instructions, encounter tables and complete boss data are not established here, treat the project’s own current documentation as the authority for installation and for the precise team you will face at a given location.

Is Neo Ultra an official Pokémon game?
No. Neo Ultra is a fan-made modification created by VariantHoop. It is presented as a hack of Pokémon Ultra Sun, not as a Nintendo or Game Freak product. That distinction affects both expectations and setup: you need access to the Ultra Sun base game and whatever installation method the project’s current documentation supports. The available project description does not verify a particular patching tool, download host, regional compatibility list or legal installation procedure, so confirm those details in the project’s latest documentation rather than assuming that an ordinary digital or cartridge copy is patched automatically.
How hard is the Alola campaign?
Neo Ultra is designed to be substantially harder than standard Ultra Sun. The challenge comes from several systems working together instead of from simple level inflation.
Opponents are built to create matchups
Trainers use reworked teams with held items, coordinated moves and improved statistics. Later opponents can bring six Pokémon, and the project states that full EV-trained opponents begin on Akala Island. A Pokémon that survives comfortably in the base game can therefore lose to a deliberately constructed combination of speed control, priority, boosting, coverage or a held-item effect.

Bosses are not limited to trial captains
The project reports more than 50 main boss fights, plus route bosses and minibosses. This means a route that appears to be ordinary exploration may contain a mandatory or optional battle that deserves the same preparation as an island trial. Save before entering unfamiliar buildings or taking a suspiciously direct route through a new area, and keep a healing plan for the battles between major checkpoints.
Totem battles have new gimmicks
Totem encounters are reworked rather than copied from Ultra Sun. Their unique gimmicks can change the value of a type advantage: an apparently favorable lead may still fail if the Totem’s partner, field effect or altered move set creates a second threat. Read the current encounter documentation before treating a Totem fight as a routine level check.
Early-game assumptions can fail
The first two Hau fights happen before Poké Marts are available. You cannot plan those battles around the standard early-game shopping loop, so your opening captures, starting items and level management matter immediately. This is especially significant for challenge runs, where an early loss may remove the only reliable answer to a later route boss.
What to do before starting a new island
Use the island transitions as planning checkpoints. The goal is not to grind every Pokémon to an arbitrary maximum; it is to identify the threats that the next section introduces and make sure your roster has answers.

- Record the next mandatory fights. List the island trial, Totem encounter, rival battle, route boss and any known Team Skull double battle before leaving your current area.
- Check the opponent profile. Note typing, team size, held items, known gimmicks and whether the battle is single or double. Exact details can change with updates, so use the project’s current documentation.
- Choose a lead plan. Decide which Pokémon can safely open, which can absorb a predicted hit and which can force a switch. Do not make your lead choice solely from the opponent’s headline type.
- Prepare two replacements. A counter that works only when healthy is not a complete plan. Bring a second answer and a way to recover from status, speed loss or an unfavorable ability interaction.
- Spend resources deliberately. Buy or use the available candies, vitamins, wings, held items and other tools to reach a specific benchmark rather than consuming everything on one favorite.
- Save and test your moveset. Check accuracy, priority and changed move effects in the current documentation. Neo Ultra changes some of these fundamentals, so a move you know from the base game may behave differently.
How island challenges work in practice
The familiar island structure remains, but each island combines exploration with a denser sequence of serious battles. Think of a trial as the visible center of a preparation arc rather than the only fight that matters.
Melemele: establish a sustainable core
Your first objective is survivability. The two early Hau battles occur before Poké Marts open, so select early captures that can switch into more than one threat and preserve your available healing. Avoid locking your party into six narrowly specialized attackers; a status move, priority option or reliable defensive pivot can be more valuable than a second Pokémon with the same attacking type.
Akala: start planning for trained opponents
Full EV-trained opponents begin at Akala Island according to the project description. From this point, a nominally equal level no longer tells you whether a matchup is safe. Inspect speed tiers, likely damage ranges and held items, then use EV-boosting items or vitamins to close the gap where it matters. Keep EV-reducing berries available if a captured Pokémon needs to be rebuilt for a different role.
Ula’ula and Poni: rotate for specialized threats
Later islands are where a fixed party is most likely to fail. The boss count, six-Pokémon teams and stronger synergy make it practical to maintain a bench of trained alternatives. Before each major fight, rotate one or two slots to answer the specific threat instead of discarding the entire roster. A balanced core remains useful, but a specialist with the correct ability, speed control or coverage can decide a battle that a generic attacker cannot.

Team Skull battles are doubles
Neo Ultra reworks Team Skull battles as double battles. Doubles change the value of spread moves, protecting a partner, speed control and target selection. Do not bring two Pokémon whose strongest attacks repeatedly damage each other or whose roles overlap so completely that one knockout leaves the pair helpless. Assign each slot a job: pressure one target, support the partner, disrupt the field or provide a safe switch.
Beginner team-building plan
Because every non-legendary Pokémon is available to catch and many receive stat, ability or move improvements, there is no single canonical story team that the hack expects you to use. Build a roster that can change.
Start with six roles, not six favorites
For a first pass, aim for a six-member core that covers multiple types and includes utility. The exact species can vary because Neo Ultra changes many move pools and abilities, but the jobs should be represented.

| Role | What it contributes | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Primary attacker | Reliable damage against neutral targets | Can it use a strong, accurate move without setup? |
| Secondary attacker | A different offensive type or physical/special axis | Does it punish the walls that stop the primary attacker? |
| Defensive pivot | Safe switches and damage control | Can it enter on a predicted hit and preserve momentum? |
| Speed control | Priority, paralysis, Tailwind-like support or other tempo tools | What happens if the opponent is faster? |
| Status or disruption | Recovery denial, disabling, screens, hazards or status | Can it create a favorable turn against a boss gimmick? |
| Flexible slot | A specialist chosen for the next island | Which upcoming matchup does this slot answer? |
These are functions, not mandatory categories. One Pokémon may fill two roles, and a new form or altered ability may let a species work differently from its base-game reputation.

Keep a rotation box
Catch additional candidates even when your active party is full. Since all non-legendary Pokémon are available and evolution methods, items and abilities have been changed, a species you ignore early may become the cleanest answer to a later boss. Label reserves by purpose—such as “fast special attacker,” “double-battle support” or “ground immunity”—so you can rebuild quickly before a trial.
Use the opponent’s team size as a planning signal
A three-Pokémon fight and a six-Pokémon boss demand different pacing. Against a short team, a carefully chosen setup turn may be worthwhile. Against six optimized Pokémon, preserving health and avoiding unnecessary sacrifices is usually more important. If the documentation lists held items, account for them before selecting a one-hit strategy; a Focus Sash-like effect, resistance berry or other item can turn a predicted knockout into a losing trade.
Recheck changed mechanics
Neo Ultra changes move accuracy, move priority, evolution methods and item effects. It also returns Type Gems, obtainable at the Battle Royal Dome. Do not copy a moveset from an ordinary Ultra Sun guide without verifying each move and item in the hack’s current documentation. A priority change can alter an entire speed plan, while a changed evolution method may affect when a team member receives its final statistics or ability.
Training and the Neo Ultra economy
The hack makes targeted preparation more practical by expanding the tools you can buy or obtain. The creator lists purchasable Rare Candies, EV-boosting items, EV-reducing berries, held items, and stronger vitamin and wing effects.
Use Rare Candies for controlled leveling
Rare Candies are useful when you have already decided what a Pokémon must do for the next fight. Level the relevant members to the intended benchmark, then spend the remaining time on moves, held items and matchup testing. Candy use does not replace a plan: a higher level cannot compensate for a team that lacks a switch-in or reliable answer to a boss gimmick.
Build EVs around a job
EV-boosting items, vitamins and wings can help you reach a defined speed, damage or survival goal. EV-reducing berries let you correct a capture that was trained for an earlier island. Avoid distributing every resource evenly merely because six Pokémon are active; focus first on the members that will directly answer the next major fight.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Shop for held-item interactions
Held items are part of the opponents’ strength, so your own items should be treated as part of the moveset. A defensive item may secure a second turn for a support Pokémon, while an offensive item can convert a two-hit knockout into a one-hit knockout. Compare the item’s effect with the boss’s known coverage instead of equipping the most powerful-looking option by default.
Find Type Gems at the Battle Royal Dome
Type Gems return in Neo Ultra and can be obtained at the Battle Royal Dome. Their one-use burst can be valuable for a planned knockout or for breaking a boss’s expected defensive line. Save them for encounters where the extra damage changes the outcome; consuming one on a routine wild battle removes a tool that may be difficult to replace before the next trial.

The expanded Pokédex is central to team building, not a side collection feature. The release lists more than 100 Neo Forms from Ultra Space and 10 new Mega Forms, along with Neo Megas. It also adds the convergent species Veefee, the Paradox Pokémon Virid Blade and Lunar Paw, and regional forms including Galarian Corsola, Hisuian Qwilfish and White-Striped Basculin.
Neo Forms and Neo Megas
Neo Forms can change the assumptions you bring from standard Alola: typing, ability, statistics and available moves may all differ. Mega evolution decisions should therefore be based on the form’s current role and the boss’s coverage, not on a species’ reputation in another game. Confirm the trigger, item and any altered effect before building a team around a Mega or Neo Mega.
Convergent and Paradox Pokémon
Veefee, Virid Blade and Lunar Paw give you additional options for filling a role that ordinary Alola captures may not cover. Their availability, evolution or encounter details are not established in the available project description, so consult the current encounter documentation rather than assuming they appear early or can be obtained without special conditions.
Regional forms and Furfrou trims
Regional forms such as Galarian Corsola, Hisuian Qwilfish and White-Striped Basculin broaden defensive and offensive combinations. Furfrou trims receive color-based secondary typings and moves, making even a familiar species potentially relevant to a matchup plan. Check each form’s actual typing, ability and move access in Neo Ultra before assigning it a role.
Exploration checklist for every route
Exploration is part of preparation because route bosses and minibosses supplement the main trials. Use this checklist when entering a new area.

- Inspect new moves and evolution requirements; both can differ from standard Ultra Sun.
- Save before interacting with a prominent NPC, entering a trial site or crossing a one-way story point.
- After a major battle, update your notes with what the opponent revealed: speed, item, coverage and any field effect.
How to prepare for Totem and route bosses
Use a three-layer plan instead of a single counter.
- Primary answer: choose the Pokémon whose typing, ability or move can pressure the boss immediately.
- Partner-control answer: identify how you will handle an ally or secondary threat. In a Totem fight, the partner may be more dangerous than the headline opponent.
- Recovery line: decide what happens after a critical hit, status condition or failed accuracy roll. Keep a backup switch, priority move or emergency healing option.
Test the plan against the boss’s known held item and gimmick. If the documentation does not provide a verified detail, do not invent one; instead, build a line that remains safe if the opponent carries an unexpected coverage move.
Nuzlocke suitability and warning
The creator explicitly says Neo Ultra “has NOT been tested or balanced around a nuzlocke” and that it “scales very quickly.” That makes a standard Nuzlocke ruleset unusually risky. The two pre-Poké-Mart Hau fights are an immediate example: conventional assumptions about buying early supplies do not apply, and an unlucky opening encounter can remove a critical team role before shopping becomes available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you still want a permadeath run, define your rules before starting and consider safeguards that acknowledge the hack’s design rather than pretending it was balanced for Nuzlocke play. Possible choices include allowing a limited number of additional encounters, permitting a retry for an undocumented gimmick, or treating a wipe as a campaign failure only after you have reviewed the current boss information. Those are house rules, not official balancing recommendations; record them so your run remains consistent.
Current release status
The current build ends immediately after the main story and Champion Hau. Postgame work is in progress, and the creator recommends not progressing after the credits. Treat that as the supported endpoint for this release: do not expect a finished Battle Tree-style continuation, postgame story or complete endgame encounter set. Because the project is actively updated, check the latest release notes and documentation before beginning a long challenge run; a future build may change encounters, mechanics or the endpoint.
Recommended first-playthrough routine
For a smooth first campaign, use this repeatable rhythm:
- Explore the available routes and catch a broad selection of non-legendary Pokémon.
- Assemble a six-member core with complementary types, at least one defensive pivot and one form of speed or status control.
- Keep several reserves trained enough to enter the next island’s battles without starting from zero.
- Read the current information for the next trial, Totem, route boss and Team Skull double battle.
- Use Rare Candies, EV tools, berries, vitamins, wings and held items to solve the specific matchup.
- Save before each major encounter and record the opponent’s revealed item, move, speed and gimmick.
- After the battle, rotate one or two slots if the next route presents a different threat.
This routine takes advantage of Neo Ultra’s broad roster without turning every route into an exhausting grind. It also protects you from the hack’s main trap: assuming that a familiar name, type chart or base-game strategy still guarantees a safe result.
What to verify before installing or updating
The project description confirms the Ultra Sun base, but it does not establish exact download instructions, supported patching tools, regional requirements or legal guidance. Before you install or update, verify the following in the project’s own current documentation:
- Which Ultra Sun release region and version are supported.
- Whether a physical cartridge, digital copy or dumped base game is required.
- The exact patching tool and file format, if one is specified.
- Whether save files are compatible between builds.
- Where the current documentation lists encounter, boss and evolution changes.
- Any update-specific warnings about continuing past Champion Hau.
Keeping a backup of your unmodified save and base-game data is sensible, but the project’s documentation should determine the exact procedure. Do not rely on an old guide for a project that is still being updated.
