Choose Pokémon Sword if you want Zacian, Deino, Jangmo-o, Sirfetch’d, Stonjourner, Galarian Darumaka, Galarian Darmanitan, Bea, or Gordie. Choose Pokémon Shield if Zamazenta, Larvitar, Goomy, Galarian Ponyta, Eiscue, Galarian Corsola, Cursola, Allister, or Melony matter more to you.
Both Nintendo Switch role-playing games use the same Galar adventure and headline systems. The practical decision is therefore about version-exclusive Pokémon, the Legendary on the box, and two Gym Leader matchups—not a fundamentally different campaign. There is no evidence-based universal winner; pick the version whose exclusive content you would rather use and collect.

At a glance: Sword or Shield?
| Choose | If your priorities include |
|---|---|
| Pokémon Sword | Zacian, Deino, Jangmo-o, Sirfetch’d, Stonjourner, Galarian Darumaka, Galarian Darmanitan, Bea, or Gordie |
| Pokémon Shield | Zamazenta, Larvitar, Goomy, Galarian Ponyta, Eiscue, Galarian Corsola, Cursola, Allister, or Melony |
If you are buying your first version without a specific favorite, either game provides the same core structure: a Galar-region journey, the Gym Challenge, the Wild Area, Dynamax and Gigantamax mechanics, Max Raid Battles, Pokémon Camp, and Poké Jobs. Your choice changes selected encounters and Gym Leaders, not the overall format of the adventure.
What both versions have in common
The same Galar setting and adventure framework
Sword and Shield are Nintendo Switch role-playing games set in the Galar region. The main journey, progression concept, and major systems are shared. You still travel through Galar, take part in the Gym Challenge, explore the Wild Area, and build a team around the Pokémon you encounter or trade for.
#1 Best Overall
- Catch, battle, and trade Pokémon on an all-new adventure in the Galar region
- Choose from three new partner Pokémon and encounter never-before-seen Pokémon
- Unravel the mystery behind the Legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta!
- Team up with other Trainers to participate in Max Raid Battles***!
- Battle wild Dynamax Pokémon in Max Raid Battles and try catching them***
Nintendo’s product information lists both games with a release date of 15 November 2019. That date identifies the original Switch releases; it does not imply that every current retail package contains later downloadable content.
Shared systems
- Wild Area: Both versions include the open exploration zone where you can encounter Pokémon and engage with the games’ large-scale activities.
- Dynamax and Gigantamax: The two versions use these battle mechanics as part of the same Galar system set.
- Max Raid Battles: Both games support cooperative raid encounters, including multiplayer participation.
- Pokémon Camp: You can use the camp system in either version.
- Poké Jobs: Both games include the job system for sending Pokémon on assignments.
Because these systems are shared, choosing Sword does not give you a different style of campaign from Shield. The version split is concentrated in which Pokémon and Gym Leaders appear, plus the cover Legendary associated with each game.
Version-exclusive Pokémon
The most important day-to-day difference is the set of Pokémon associated with each version. The names below are representative exclusives identified by the official version-exclusives information; they are the clearest way to match a game to the team or collection you want. They are not a claim that the table is every species difference in the games.

| Sirfetch’d | Galarian Ponyta |

How to use the list
Start with the Pokémon you actually want to raise or keep in your collection, rather than counting how many names appear on one side. A single favorite can outweigh several neutral choices: if Deino or Jangmo-o is a planned team member, Sword removes the need to obtain that species through another player. If Larvitar or Goomy is the reason you are interested in the Galar Pokédex, Shield is the more direct purchase.
Regional forms also matter. Sword’s listed examples include Galarian Darumaka and Galarian Darmanitan, while Shield’s include Galarian Ponyta, Galarian Corsola, and Cursola. Those are not interchangeable preferences simply because both games contain the same broader Galar setting; the particular form you want is tied to the version in which it is listed.

Collection versus a single playthrough
For a story-focused run, you only need to decide which available encounters you want to see and use. For a completion-focused collection, the split is more significant because you may want species from both columns. In that case, choosing one version is still sensible: use it as your primary game and plan to trade for the opposite side later, rather than buying both solely to obtain every listed Pokémon.
Gym Leader differences
The official Pokémon comparison page describes the split directly: Each Version of the Game Has Different Gym Leaders for You to Challenge!
Sword and Shield therefore change some of the Gym Leader encounters while keeping the Gym Challenge as a shared pillar of the adventure.
| Version | Version-exclusive Gym Leaders |
|---|---|
| Pokémon Sword | Bea and Gordie |
| Pokémon Shield | Allister and Melony |
Why the leaders can decide the purchase
Gym Leaders are recurring story opponents, not an optional side activity. If you want Bea or Gordie in your playthrough, Sword is the only choice of the two. If Allister or Melony is the matchup and character presentation you want to experience, choose Shield.
The leader difference is also useful when choosing a version for a second run. Someone who has already completed one game can select the opposite version to see the alternate Gym Leader set while retaining the familiar Galar structure.
The cover Legendary: Zacian or Zamazenta
| Game | Cover Legendary |
|---|---|
| Pokémon Sword | Zacian |
| Pokémon Shield | Zamazenta |
Zacian is the Sword Legendary and Zamazenta is the Shield Legendary. If the Pokémon displayed on the box is the reason you are choosing between editions, this is the simplest possible decision: select the game featuring the one you want.
Rank #3
- New entries in the main series of Pokémon RPGs arrive on Nintendo Switch simultaneously in late 2019
- The Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games take place in the newly discovered Galar Region
- Galar is an expansive region with diverse environments - an idyllic countryside, contemporary cities, thick forest and craggy, snow-covered mountains
- Fans will have the opportunity to visit Gyms in the Galar region in their quest to become Champion
- Newly discovered partner Pokémon join in this new iteration of the games - Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble
The Legendary choice works alongside the exclusive-Pokémon decision. You do not have to choose between a favorite Legendary and a favorite ordinary team member in the abstract; list both priorities, then see which version satisfies more of the things you personally care about. There is no supported basis for calling one Legendary or one version objectively superior.

How the shared systems affect the decision
Wild Area and exploration
Both versions include the Wild Area, so buying Shield does not mean giving up the central open exploration feature, and buying Sword does not unlock a separate exploration system. The version distinction is which Pokémon and encounters are available within the shared framework.
Dynamax, Gigantamax, and Max Raid Battles
Dynamax and Gigantamax mechanics are present in both games, as are Max Raid Battles. Nintendo’s information also describes multiplayer participation in Max Raid Battles. These shared mechanics make either version suitable if your main interest is experimenting with the Galar battle format or playing raids with other people.
Pokémon Camp and Poké Jobs
Pokémon Camp and Poké Jobs are likewise shared. They are not reasons to favor Sword over Shield, but they can be reasons to choose either game over a version decision based only on the exclusive list: both editions offer the same broad set of supporting activities around the main journey.
A practical decision framework
Step 1: Name your non-negotiable Pokémon
- Write down the Legendary you want: Zacian points to Sword; Zamazenta points to Shield.
- Add any Pokémon you specifically want to catch, train, or display. Sword’s notable examples include Deino, Jangmo-o, Sirfetch’d, Stonjourner, Galarian Darumaka, and Galarian Darmanitan. Shield’s include Larvitar, Goomy, Galarian Ponyta, Eiscue, Galarian Corsola, and Cursola.
- If at least one of those names is a must-have, choose the version containing it. You can trade later for other exclusives, but the matching version gives you the most direct access.
Step 2: Choose the Gym Leader set
Pick Bea and Gordie for Sword, or Allister and Melony for Shield. This is a story-content preference, so it deserves equal weight with Pokémon availability rather than being treated as a minor cosmetic change.

Rank #4
- A new generation of Pokemon is coming to the Nintendo Switch system.
- Become a Pokemon Trainer and embark on a new journey in the new Galar region!
- Choose from one of three new partner Pokemon: Grookey, Scorbunny, or Sobble.
- In this all new adventure, you'll encounter new and familiar Pokemon as you catch, battle, and trade Pokemon while exploring new areas and uncovering an all-new story.
- Get ready for the next Pokemon adventure in the Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield games.
Step 3: Account for your household or friend group
If a friend or family member already owns the opposite version, choose the game whose exclusives you personally want to keep. A trading partner can help you obtain the other side, making the two-version ecosystem more useful without forcing you to buy both games.
Step 4: Ignore unsupported “best version” claims
The shared campaign and systems mean there is no evidence here for a universal winner, higher-quality story, or objectively better first playthrough. A recommendation that does not identify a preferred Pokémon, Legendary, or Gym Leader is usually substituting someone else’s taste for yours.
Which version is better for a first playthrough?
For a first playthrough, choose based on the team you want to build and the version-exclusive Gym Leaders you want to face. The shared adventure means newcomers receive the same basic introduction to Galar, the Gym Challenge, the Wild Area, Dynamax and Gigantamax, Max Raid Battles, Pokémon Camp, and Poké Jobs in either game.
Here are useful first-run scenarios:
- You want the Sword Legendary or its named exclusives: start with Sword so your preferred Pokémon can be part of the original journey.
- You want the Shield Legendary or its named exclusives: start with Shield for the same reason.
- You are undecided and have a trading partner: select the side containing the Pokémon you most want to train yourself; arrange trades for the other version’s species afterward.
- You are buying for a second player in the same household: choosing opposite versions creates a natural way to exchange version-exclusive Pokémon, provided your planned online or local setup supports the desired trades.
Do not choose solely because a retailer lists one edition at a different price or with different stock. Current prices, inventory, region, and edition details change independently of the game content.
Trading, cooperation, and online considerations
Trading or online cooperation can reduce the practical impact of version exclusives. A player with Sword can work with someone using Shield, and vice versa, to broaden the Pokémon available to each collection. Max Raid Battles also support multiplayer participation, so the shared cooperative systems remain relevant regardless of which box you buy.

Service availability and retail conditions can change. Before relying on an online trade plan, check the current Nintendo service requirements, regional availability, and the exact edition you are purchasing. The version comparison establishes that trading can help; it does not establish a permanent feature list, price, or account requirement for every current marketplace or region.
When trading should not drive the choice
Choose your preferred version even if you expect to trade. Trades depend on another player having the desired Pokémon and being willing to exchange it. If a Pokémon is central to your first team, buying the version that lists it avoids making your opening adventure dependent on a future trade.
Buying the base game and Expansion Pass
The official Pokémon site presents separate Sword and Shield Expansion Passes. Treat the pass as version-specific downloadable content: a Sword pass is associated with Sword, and a Shield pass is associated with Shield.

A simple purchase checklist
- Confirm that the listing is for Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield, not merely an accessory or unrelated bundle.
- Check whether it is a base game, an edition that includes an Expansion Pass, or a separate pass sold alongside the game.
- Match the region and Nintendo account requirements to the system on which you will play.
- Verify the current price, stock status, and any included download code before completing the order.

Final recommendation
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are parallel versions of the same Galar adventure. Sword is the right purchase for players who prioritize Zacian, its listed exclusive Pokémon, or Bea and Gordie. Shield is the right purchase for players who prioritize Zamazenta, its listed exclusive Pokémon, or Allister and Melony. If none of those names matters, choose the edition that fits your trading partner or household arrangement; the shared systems and campaign structure make either a valid first playthrough.
