The best Pokémon watch order depends on what you want from the anime. Start with Pokémon Horizons: The Series for a modern, self-contained adventure starring Liko and Roy; start with Pokémon the Series: Indigo League for Ash’s story from Kanto; or begin with Pokémon Journeys: The Series if you only want Ash’s championship and farewell. Movies are optional, and no single U.S. streaming service carries the entire backlog. The Pokémon Company has never published one official “correct” order, so the practical answer is three main routes rather than one enormous checklist.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Horizons first | New viewers wanting a current story | Three U.S. seasons available; Season 4 Part 1 dated for 27 February 2027 | Netflix U.S.; official locator for other regions | Oct 2026 |
| Indigo League to Ash’s farewell | Viewers who want the complete Ash journey | About 25 English-branded Ash seasons, then Horizons | Multiple services, digital stores and discs | Oct 2026 |
| Journeys to farewell | Returning fans who want Ash’s ending | Journeys, Master Journeys, Ultimate Journeys and To Be a Pokémon Master | Netflix U.S. plus changing regional catalogs | Oct 2026 |
| Family sample | Households testing the format | Sample Indigo League, then try XY, Journeys or Horizons | Use the current official locator | Oct 2026 |
Which Pokémon watch order should you choose?
Choose one of these routes before opening a streaming app:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Choose Horizons if you want the shortest path to the current mainline series. It introduces Liko, Roy and a new central mystery; Ash and Pikachu are not the leads, and earlier seasons are not required.
- Choose Indigo League if the appeal is seeing Ash begin in Kanto, travel through every region and eventually become World Champion. Continue through the English season titles in the order below, then watch the farewell episodes and Horizons.
- Choose Journeys if you already know Ash and Pikachu and mainly want the World Coronation Series, the championship payoff and Ash’s final television arc.
- Choose a sample for young or uncertain viewers. A few Indigo League episodes followed by an episode or two of XY, Journeys or Horizons can show which tone works before committing to hundreds of episodes.
The television anime has more than 1,350 episodes according to Furansujapon’s 9 October 2026 count. IGN’s 3 February 2026 update counted more than 1,300 episodes across 27 seasons, a figure that predates later Horizons episodes. Those totals describe the size of the franchise, not a requirement that every viewer watch everything.
Can I start with Pokémon Horizons?
Yes. Horizons is a new mainline series with its own protagonists and central storyline, so you can begin without watching Ash’s 25-season journey. The official Horizons site introduces Liko, a Paldea student with Sprigatito, and Roy, whose partner is Fuecoco; they travel with the Rising Volt Tacklers aboard the airship Brave Olivine, led by Professor Friede and Captain Pikachu.

1. Pokémon Horizons: The Series
The first English-market season has 45 episodes. Liko’s mysterious pendant draws the Explorers’ attention, while Roy’s Kanto-island background gives the group a second point of entry. The show is more serialized than classic Ash-era travel, so watching episodes in release order matters.
2. Pokémon Horizons: Season 2—The Search for Laqua
This 44-episode season moves into the Terastal Debut at Naranja Academy in Paldea and then the Rayquaza Rising storyline, including a Shiny Rayquaza and locations associated with Scarlet and Violet downloadable content.

Japan’s Mega Voltage arc contains 47 episodes, broadcast from 11 April 2025 through 1 May 2026. It takes place one year after the previous arc, making Liko and Roy slightly older. Mega Evolution returns to the television series, and the story explores the aftermath of Laqua along with Roy’s and Ult’s histories. The season arrived on U.S. Netflix on 6 January 2026.
4. Pokémon Horizons: Season 4—Wonders Ahead
The Japanese Wonder Voyage arc began on 22 May 2026. A new companion, Navie, and a Ditto join the adventure as Liko, Roy and the Rising Volt Tacklers set out after Laquium is no longer a threat. In the United States, Part 1 premieres exclusively on Netflix on 27 February 2027; dates for additional parts have not been announced. English-language viewers are therefore behind the Japanese broadcast as of late October 2026.
Netflix U.S. identifies the first three seasons with title IDs 81696980, 81944585 and 82077961. Searching the full English season names is more reliable than relying on a service’s overall “Season 26,” “Season 27” or “Season 28” label.

What is the complete Ash watch order from Kanto onward?
For Ash’s story, use the English titles below rather than a platform’s numeric season labels. Distributor numbering differs from Japanese broadcast numbering, while the narrative order of these titles remains stable.

- Pokémon Master Journeys: The Series
- Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series — Ash becomes World Champion.
- Pokémon: To Be a Pokémon Master — the short farewell arc after the championship.
Some services fold the roughly 11 farewell episodes into Ultimate Journeys; others list To Be a Pokémon Master separately. If both labels appear, play both. Pokémon: The Arceus Chronicles is an optional Journeys-era special between Master Journeys and Ultimate Journeys, not a missing season.
After the farewell, switch to Pokémon Horizons if you want the current series. It is a new era rather than a continuation in which Ash remains the lead.
Why do platforms skip Orange Islands or show the wrong season number?
English packaging and Japanese broadcast blocks use different boundaries. The Japanese first block contains 82 episodes, while U.S. distribution often labels only 52 episodes as “Season 1” and places the remaining Kanto episodes at the start of Adventures in the Orange Islands. That can make Orange Islands look unusually long or make a service appear to jump directly from Indigo League to Johto.
Search by the exact title—Adventures in the Orange Islands, Battle Frontier or XY—Kalos Quest—rather than “Season 2” or “Season 24.” English season numbers on Netflix, Prime Video and Hulu do not map cleanly to Japanese episode numbers or fan indexes.

Should you watch Pokémon movies while following the series?
No. The movies are optional depth, not prerequisites for understanding the television plot. There are 23 animated Pokémon movies, plus the live-action Detective Pikachu, which belongs to a separate continuity. Exact episode placement is approximate because the films often sit beside the television story rather than advancing it.
Track 1: era-matched films
Insert these after the indicated English-season progress if you want the traditional theatrical experience:
| Film | Approximate placement |
|---|---|
| Pokémon: The First Movie / Mewtwo Strikes Back (1998) | After Orange Islands episode 11, or late Indigo/early Orange |
| The Movie 2000: The Power of One (1999) | After Orange Islands episode 49 |
| Pokémon 3: Spell of the Unown (2000) | After The Johto Journeys episode 39 |
| Pokémon 4Ever: Celebi—Voice of the Forest (2001) | After Johto League Champions episode 48 |
| Pokémon Heroes (2002) | After Master Quest episode 46 |
| Jirachi: Wish Maker (2003) | After Advanced episode 34 |
| Destiny Deoxys (2004) | After Advanced Challenge episode 45 |
| Lucario and the Mystery of Mew (2005) | After Advanced Battle episode 41 |
| Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea (2006) | After Battle Frontier episode 38 |
| The Rise of Darkrai (2007) | After Diamond and Pearl episode 39 |
| Giratina and the Sky Warrior (2008) | After DP Battle Dimension episode 34 |
| Arceus and the Jewel of Life (2009) | After DP Galactic Battles episode 30 |
| Zoroark: Master of Illusions (2010) | After DP Sinnoh League Victors episode 27 |
| White—Victini and Zekrom or Black—Victini and Reshiram (2011) | After Black & White episode 37; choose one near-duplicate version |
| Kyurem vs. the Sword of Justice (2012) | After Rival Destinies episode 33 |
| Genesect and the Legend Awakened (2013) | After Adventures in Unova and Beyond episode 25 |
| Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction (2014) | After XY episode 37 |
| Hoopa and the Clash of Ages (2015) | After Kalos Quest episode 32 |
| Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel (2016) | After XYZ episode 34 |
Mewtwo Returns and The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon are extra television movies that some lists include. They are not needed for the main route. Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution (2019) is a CGI remake of the first movie, not a new continuation.
Track 2: the alternate Ash movie timeline
- Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! (2017) is a loose reboot of the anime’s pilot.
- The Power of Us (2018) continues that movie continuity and loosely reworks elements of The Movie 2000.
- Pokémon: Secrets of the Jungle (2020) remains in the same alternate line.
Keep these three together as a separate mini-marathon. They do not replace Indigo League, and they are not a shortcut to Ash’s television continuity.

Can you skip Pokémon filler?
You can skip individual episodes because the anime is largely episodic, but there is no official Pokémon Company filler list. Furansujapon’s “hors-série” labels are fan/editorial classifications based on Japanese episode numbers, not canonical skip instructions. Early Brock and Misty episodes, Team Rocket stories and character-building detours are often called filler even though they establish the tone many viewers value.

Horizons is more serialized, so skipping randomly is riskier. Watch its seasons in release order rather than applying a classic Ash-era filler guide. Furansujapon does not publish a filler list for Journeys onward.

That snapshot covers Season 1, not every season.

What optional Pokémon series and specials are worth adding?
Watch these separately after you know which Pokémon style you enjoy:
- Pokémon Chronicles — about 22 side-story episodes.
- Pokémon Origins — a four-episode, game-inspired Red story.
- Pokémon Generations — short vignettes based on game moments.
- Twilight Wings — Galar shorts.
- Hisuian Snow — a Hisui story adjacent to Legends: Arceus.
- Paldean Winds and Path to the Peak — short-form Paldea and Trading Card Game stories.
- Pokémon Concierge — a standalone stop-motion resort series on Netflix; its second season is also available.
- Terapagos no Kirakira Tanken-ki — a Horizons side-story ONA.
- Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu — an announced Aardman stop-motion extra for 2027, not part of the current order.
How was this watch order chosen?
The routes prioritize continuity, accessibility and the reader’s goal. Horizons is first for newcomers because it is self-contained and currently available through Netflix. Indigo League comes first for a complete Ash journey because it preserves the original character introductions and regional progression. Journeys is the efficient Ash-ending route because it leads directly to the World Coronation Series and farewell. Movies remain optional because their continuity is separate or loosely aligned, and exact episode slots vary by release market.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why were some early Pokémon episodes never broadcast outside Japan?
Episode 35 of the Japanese Indigo block was withheld internationally because of its gun imagery, and episode 38 was withheld after a photosensitive-seizure incident. Most U.S. streams and home-video releases already omit these episodes, so their absence is not a missing-season error.
Why do some guides call Horizons seasons 28, 29 and 30?
Overall-season numbering differs by publisher. Some indexes count Horizons as seasons 28–30, while others label them Seasons 1–3 of a new series or Seasons 26–28 of the broader Pokémon brand. The English titles—The Series, The Search for Laqua and Rising Hope—avoid that mismatch.
Does Pokémon Concierge belong between Ash seasons?
No. Pokémon Concierge is a standalone stop-motion story set at a resort, with no place in Ash’s or Horizons’ continuity. Watch it independently whenever you want a shorter, quieter Pokémon experience.
What is the Japanese streaming option for viewers outside the U.S.?
For bilingual viewers in Japan, VOD Compass identified DMM TV, U-NEXT and Amazon Prime Video Japan as subscription services aimed at covering the Japanese library. Regional licensing still applies, so an English-language viewer should verify subtitles, dubs and local rights before subscribing.
