To follow the Premier League title race, compare each contender’s points with its matches played, then check goal difference and upcoming fixtures. The official Premier League table and fixture pages show the current standings, results and next matches; use them for the latest information because schedules can change.
How the Premier League title race works
The Premier League has 20 clubs, with each team playing every other team home and away across 380 matches. A win earns three points, a draw one and a defeat none. The club with the most points at the end of the season wins the title, unless two or more clubs are level and the tie-break rules apply. See the Premier League format explainer.
How to read the Premier League table
The official table lists each club’s position, matches played, wins, draws, losses, goals for, goals against, goal difference, points, form and next match. Check points and matches played together: a club below a rival in the table may have played fewer matches, but a game in hand is only an opportunity to earn points, not points already secured. The live Premier League table is the place to check the current standings and results.
- Played: how many league matches the club has completed.
- Points: the total earned from wins and draws.
- Goal difference: goals scored minus goals conceded.
- Next match: the club’s upcoming fixture, subject to schedule changes.
What happens when teams are level on points?
The Premier League applies tie-breakers in this order:

#1 Best Overall
- Goal difference.
- Goals scored.
- Points won in head-to-head matches between the tied clubs.
- Away goals scored in those head-to-head matches.
If clubs competing for the title remain inseparable after those criteria, they may play a one-off match at a neutral venue. In an explainer dated 14 May 2026, the league said no such playoff had occurred in its history. See the Premier League tie-break rules.
