Squid Game is a scripted drama about fictional characters facing lethal consequences. Squid Game: The Challenge is an unscripted competition in which real contestants play adapted games for a cash prize; losing means elimination, not death. The reality series borrows the original’s imagery, but its suspense comes from real players’ choices and rivalries, while production uses safety measures and effects to create the show’s most dramatic moments.

Netflix announced the reality competition with a USD $4.56 million prize. That figure is the contest’s stated prize, not the fictional stakes of the drama. Netflix’s announcement also described games inspired by the original series as well as new ones.
What happens when a contestant loses?
In the scripted drama, a loss can be fatal within the story. In the reality contest, a player is removed from the game. The apparent burst beneath a contestant’s shirt is an ink-packet effect used to signal an elimination after production systems and adjudicators determine the result; it is not a paintball hit or a real injury. Netflix explains the effect and the Red Light, Green Light motion-tracking system in its production FAQ.
The first Red Light, Green Light round reduced the field from 456 players to 197, according to Netflix Tudum’s production feature. That large reduction shows how a reality competition creates consequences: contestants genuinely leave the contest, but the lethal outcomes belong to the fictional story.

Are the games the same as in the drama?
They are recognizable adaptations, not literal recreations of the fictional games. Netflix’s 2023 account says the reality series moves into Red Light, Green Light early, whereas the scripted series spends nearly a full episode on exposition before its games begin. The competition also introduces games beyond those drawn from the original’s imagery.
Red Light, Green Light
The reality version uses motion tracking to judge players’ movement. When a player is ruled out, an ink packet under the shirt provides the visible elimination cue. Executive producer Stephen Yemoh said, “We’ve always wondered how we’re going to get a story out of this show, and Red Light, Green Light proved that we had an amazing story straight away,” as quoted by Netflix Tudum.

The Glass Bridge
The bridge makes the difference between fictional danger and reality-show staging especially clear. In the scripted series, the bridge is described as using ordinary and tempered glass, and a fall is fatal in the story. For the reality set, Netflix reports that the stepping panels were clear acrylic, with trapdoors used to create the fall effect. The pass/fail arrangement was set in advance and known to a small production group; independent adjudicators oversaw the game.
The apparent fall was performed by a stuntperson onto a safety airbag, with visual effects extending the fall shown on screen. Contestants’ elimination reactions were filmed before a stunt performer took the fall. Netflix’s Glass Bridge production explanation details how those elements were combined. Executive producer Toni Ireland said, “The [players’] reactions are all genuine,” in the same account.

Where the reality show gets its suspense
The drama’s uncertainty is authored: writers shape characters, relationships, and plot outcomes. The competition’s uncertainty comes from what actual contestants decide to do. Netflix’s official description foregrounds strategies and alliances, so the central questions become who cooperates, who takes risks, and how relationships shift under pressure—not which scripted character will survive a written plot.
Editing and production shape what viewers see, but that alone does not establish that the competition is scripted. The available production accounts describe real contestants making strategic choices and genuine reactions; they do not support treating the show as a scripted drama.

How production balances immersion and safety
The reality series builds an environment that evokes the original while controlling how games are run and how apparent danger is presented. Netflix’s 2023 production accounts describe safety oversight, rules against violent or threatening behavior, and catered meals that production characterized as nutritionally balanced. Those details do not make the competition equivalent to the fictional lethal contest: its risks and outcomes are those of a managed reality competition, not fictional execution.
The production figures and mechanics described here are specific to the season-one accounts published in 2023. They should not be assumed to describe every later season’s procedures. Netflix’s FAQ also reports approximately 110 cameras in the dorm during a typical scene; that is a dorm-specific figure, not a camera count for the whole production.
