How much free space do I need for GTA 6?
There is no trustworthy official number yet. Rockstar and the platform holders have confirmed the supported consoles and launch timing, but the available specifications do not establish an installed-size figure for either PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Use the eventual game-store listing or a platform-holder announcement as the number to compare with your free space. A download may also need temporary working room while it installs or updates, but no GTA 6-specific allowance has been published, so setting an arbitrary target would be misleading. Recheck the listing close to preload rather than relying on estimates circulated on social media.
To see the space you actually have, inspect the console’s storage screen before deleting anything. On PS5 the verified route is Settings > Storage. Record both the free console capacity and any free M.2 capacity; a game can only use the locations that meet its platform’s play requirements.

Start with a short inventory. This prevents the common mistake of clearing a large installation while leaving captures, duplicate downloads or saved data untouched.
- Check available console, M.2 or expansion-card space first.
- Identify games and applications you no longer play, along with installations you can redownload from your account.
- Separate installed games from saved data and screenshots or video. They are managed as different storage categories.
- Synchronize saves before intentionally removing saved data. On PlayStation Plus, Sony states allowances of up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data; the allowance applies to saved data, not your installed games.
- Copy captures you want to keep to a suitably formatted USB drive. A drive formatted as extended game storage is not automatically a capture backup.
- Leave purchases and upgrades until after free cleanup. Storage hardware cannot reduce the download space GTA 6 itself will require.
How do I free up space on PS5?
Use Sony’s storage tools in this order: inspect, remove replaceable installations, then archive games you want to keep. Purchased digital games remain available to redownload from your library after deletion.
- Open Settings > Storage. Review Console Storage and, if installed, M.2 SSD Storage. Note the free figure before making changes.
- Open Console Storage > Games and Apps. Sort the list so the largest installations are visible, then select games or applications that are no longer needed.
- Choose Delete for items you can safely redownload. Deleting an installation does not remove the purchase entitlement from your account.
- Use Customize when it appears. Some games expose optional components that can be removed without deleting the entire installation. This control is game-dependent; do not assume GTA 6 will offer component-level deletion until its listing says so.
- Review Saved Data and Game/App Settings separately. Do not delete saves merely because the game installation is large. Confirm cloud synchronization first if you use PlayStation Plus.
- Review Media Gallery. Export captures you want to keep before deleting them. A USB capture backup and game storage use different formats and purposes.
After cleanup, reopen the storage screen and verify the free amount. If the result is still short of the official GTA 6 listing when it appears, move an infrequently played game to archive storage or install a compatible M.2 drive.
Can I move PS5 games to a USB drive?
Yes, for archiving. From the Game Library, highlight a game, press the options button, choose Move Games and Apps, then choose Move and select the USB extended-storage drive. Sony’s documented USB requirement is SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later, with 250 GB minimum and 8 TB maximum capacity; formatting the drive erases its existing contents.

A PS5 game stored on that USB drive must be copied back to the console’s internal SSD or a compatible M.2 SSD before you can play it. PS4 games may play directly from USB extended storage. Do not buy an ordinary USB drive expecting it to run GTA 6.
Should I install an M.2 SSD in my PS5?
An M.2 SSD is the PS5-specific paid upgrade when deleting and archiving are not enough. It provides a second location from which supported PS5 games can run, unlike USB extended storage.
Sony specifies a compatible PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe drive with capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB and recommends sequential read speeds of 5,500 MB/s or faster. The drive also needs a heatsink that fits the PS5’s height and clearance limits. These are compatibility requirements, not a promise of a particular GTA 6 size or loading result.
- Update PS5 system software before opening the console, and shut the system down completely.
- Choose a drive within Sony’s capacity, interface, speed and physical-clearance requirements. Check the complete drive-and-heatsink dimensions rather than assuming every M.2 product fits.
- Use a #1 Phillips screwdriver. Sony provides different cover-opening instructions for different PS5 model groups, so follow the instructions for your exact model rather than forcing the panel.
- Install the M.2 assembly in the expansion connector and secure it as Sony’s instructions show. Do not operate the console with a loose drive or an improperly seated heatsink.
- Start the PS5 and format the drive when prompted. First-time formatting erases data on that drive.
- Return to Settings > Storage and confirm the new M.2 capacity before moving games or applications.

On Xbox, first identify what is installed on the internal drive and whether you already have an expansion card. The exact dashboard wording can change, so use the console’s current storage-management screen rather than relying on an old button-by-button guide. Uninstall games you can redownload, and move games you want to keep but do not need immediately.
For native Series X|S games, a compatible expansion card is the direct-play option. Seagate states that its Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S supports playing games directly from the card. An ordinary external drive can store native-generation games, but Seagate says they must be transferred back to playable internal or expansion-card storage before launch.

The WD_BLACK C50 Storage Expansion Card for Xbox is identified by its manufacturer in 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB variants. Those are product capacities, not predictions of the GTA 6 install size. Neither an expansion card nor a USB drive is interchangeable with a PS5 M.2 SSD.
What should I move to an ordinary Xbox USB drive?
Use ordinary USB storage as a holding area for games you want to keep installed in your account but do not plan to launch immediately. It can free internal space without deleting the game data, but plan a transfer back before playing a native Series X|S title. This is useful for rotating a library, not for bypassing the console’s playable-storage requirement.

Not from a standard USB drive on either console. On PS5, Sony requires PS5 games to run from the internal SSD or a compatible M.2 SSD; USB extended storage is for archiving PS5 games and for direct play of PS4 games. On Xbox Series X|S, native games can run from a compatible expansion card, while ordinary external storage normally requires a transfer back first.
When shopping, distinguish the words external storage and expansion storage. A USB drive may have a large capacity and still be unsuitable for direct GTA 6 play. Confirm the console-specific compatibility and the manufacturer’s direct-play statement before buying.
Do I need an Xbox expansion card?
You need one only if the internal drive will not hold GTA 6 alongside the games you want ready to launch and you want the added capacity to run native Series X|S games without transfers. Free deletion and an ordinary USB archive can be enough for a smaller library, but neither creates another direct-play location for native games.

Does the GTA 6 physical edition include a disc?
Rockstar says the physical GTA 6 edition contains a download code and no disc. Buying the box therefore does not eliminate the need for download and installation space.
Check the platform and account region before purchasing a code. Rockstar says Xbox codes are not region-locked, while PlayStation purchases should be matched carefully to the region of the account that will redeem them. A code-in-box edition is a purchase format, not a storage-saving workaround.
When should I prepare my console?
Do the reversible cleanup before preload week, then verify the official listing again when Rockstar or the platform store publishes the final size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same external drive on my PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?
Do not assume it will be plug-and-play on both systems. Each console applies its own formatting and game-storage rules, and a drive prepared for one platform may need to be reformatted before the other can use it, which erases existing contents.
Will deleting a digital game remove my ownership?
Deleting the local installation does not normally remove the purchase entitlement tied to the account that bought it. You will still need to sign in to that account and redownload the game when you want to play.
