Probably Stolen is the closest match for a cyberpunk shopkeeper game that combines Papers, Please-style scrutiny with Recettear-style buying, haggling and debt. Questing Goose Studio’s single-player pixel-art sim launched on Steam on 28 October 2026. You run a Lower-Levels storefront on a dystopian space station, inspect goods and customers, decide how illegal you are willing to be, and try to buy out the shop before rising rent ends the run. If you want the same setting, look first at Ghost Receipt or Black Market Space Station Shop Simulator; if you want the underlying merchant mechanics, Recettear, Potionomics and No Umbrellas Allowed are stronger relatives.

| Black Market Space Station Shop Simulator | A station-based contraband premise | Ex-con runs a general store under surveillance; listed for 28 October 2026 | Oct 2026 |
| Graveyard Keeper | Morally dubious management | Shady production and obligations in a grim setting | Oct 2026 |
How we picked: The ranking weighs mechanical overlap (inspection, appraisal, haggling, production and debt), setting overlap (cyberpunk or space-station commerce), and whether the game is a shop-only simulation or a shop-and-adventure hybrid. Release dates, sales figures and review percentages are attributed to the publishers or outlets that reported them.

What is Probably Stolen?
Probably Stolen casts you as a former scavenger who borrows money to secure a shop in the poor levels of a giant space station. Every day mixes retail decisions with moral triage: janitors, security officers, revolutionaries, disgraced elites, wanted criminals and human-looking Augs come to the counter. Goods have flexible legality, so a profitable sale can also create a faction enemy, a raid or a worse customer line tomorrow.
The counter is the Papers, Please side of the design. You inspect people, documents and merchandise, then approve, refuse, report or deliberately look away. The ledger is the Recettear side: buy stock against a moving market, judge a customer’s budget, haggle over the final price and accept that greed can cost reputation. Questing Goose describes the premise as a business built on “merchandise with flexible origins,” which is a useful summary of the game’s central risk.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What happens during a day?
- Open the shop and read the queue. Different customers carry different risks and purchasing power.
- Inspect stock. Cigarettes need visual checks; water must be tested and filtered; weapons need permits and modifications; rare goods require appraisal; chemicals use guarded recipes.
- Set a price and haggle. A high price improves immediate cash but can damage reputation; a generous deal may buy goodwill or a safer relationship.
- Make a decision about legality. You can report a criminal, hide contraband, relabel a counterfeit, fence stolen goods, cut quality or bribe an inspector.
- Close and prepare. After hours you can scavenge dumps, trade with other businesses, run production chains and pay rent and electricity.
Night scavenging is not a free resource run. Rock Paper Shotgun describes the danger of being shivved or shanked, while other coverage notes that leaving the shop uses a location teleport rather than a 3D walk and can cost the next day’s customers. Overnight theft is also possible without alarms.
Why does rent matter so much?
The landlord’s rent rises throughout the run, and electricity is another recurring bill. Falling behind reduces store attractiveness and therefore traffic. The stated win condition is to buy out the shop before that pressure forces you to quit, giving the campaign a roguelike debt clock rather than a permanently cozy business.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFaction politics make the clock harder to solve cleanly. Reporting a criminal may pay Security while damaging the resistance; every sale is recorded somewhere. The game therefore asks which kind of trouble you are willing to monetize, not merely which item has the highest margin.
Which starting paths are in the 1.0 release?
The official 1.0 announcement lists nine starting paths. The Steam store copy still names six, and a DualShockers review refers to 12 specializations. The cleanest reading is nine available at 1.0 plus three announced post-launch paths—Organ Trader, Junker and Street Food Vendor—rather than 12 fully playable openings on launch day.
| Path | What you sell | Known pressure |
|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | General goods, household items and extra credit | Generalist/tutorial opening; no special drawback stated |
| Water Merchant | Water | Every batch must be tested and filtered; the water system received a launch balance hotfix |
| Fence | Stolen goods | Hide inventory from authorities and survive raids |
| Rock Bottom | Nothing at the start | Hardcore opening with no initial stock |
| Hydroponic Farmer | Crops | Starts with hydroponics and seeds; DualShockers reports increased rent |
| Gunsmith | Weapons | Permits, modifications and inspections |
| Chemist | Chemicals | Addiction risk and guarded recipes |
| Rat Wrangler | Rats and meat | Community and playtest descriptions identify the product line; an official consequence was not published |
| Aquafarmer | Fish, including tilapia, eels, sturgeons and caviar | Added in the 19 October 2026 demo update |
These are not cosmetic loadouts. Water makes quality control the bottleneck, guns make paperwork and modifications central, and the Fence path turns inventory concealment into the main survival problem. The product line determines which rule you are most likely to break first.
Which games are most like Probably Stolen?
1. Papers, Please — closest to the inspection desk
Lucas Pope’s 2013 border-booth game is the clearest match for the moment-to-moment act of checking identity and deciding who gets through. Probably Stolen adds a complete buying economy, product inspection, crafting, faction reputation and haggling, so it is broader and more commercially focused. Choose Papers, Please if you want concentrated moral decisions with minimal inventory management; choose Probably Stolen if you want those decisions embedded in a shop campaign.

2. Recettear: An Item Shop’s Tale — closest to the merchant loop
Recettear established the modern template of buying stock, setting prices, haggling and working down a debt clock. PC Gamer explicitly compares Probably Stolen with it: you are not only selling but also buying, and a greedy haggle can hurt reputation. Recettear’s second half is dungeon combat, whereas Probably Stolen substitutes dump scavenging, production and station politics. Tyrian Games reported more than 500,000 Steam copies by 2017, making it the historical reference point for this kind of shop RPG.
3. No Umbrellas Allowed — closest to appraisal mystery
No Umbrellas Allowed makes the incoming item itself the puzzle. You investigate history and condition to reveal true value, then negotiate from that information. That appraisal tug-of-war is a better comparison for Probably Stolen’s rare goods and counterfeit decisions than a generic store simulator is.
4. Potionomics — deepest haggling system
Potionomics turns negotiation into card-based persuasion, with customer moods and long-term business consequences. It lacks Probably Stolen’s contraband-and-faction setting, but it is the stronger choice if your favorite part of the comparison is reading a buyer and deciding how much pressure to apply.
5. Potion Craft — production before retail
Potion Craft is a purer make-then-sell game. You experiment with recipes and serve customers; there is no scavenging route or rent-driven cyberpunk crime story. It is a good alternative when you want tactile production and pricing without the moral reporting layer.
6. Moonlighter — the shop-plus-adventure branch
Moonlighter pairs a shop with dungeon expeditions: fight for goods, return to town and sell them. Probably Stolen has no equivalent combat dungeon and does not let you freely walk the station in 3D; scavenging and production replace that adventure half. Moonlighter crossed one million copies by May 2020, with the bulk of its revenue coming from Nintendo Switch, and remains the obvious choice when combat matters as much as commerce.
What are the closest cyberpunk and space-station alternatives?
For the same neon, contraband-facing premise rather than the same mechanics, start with Ghost Receipt and Black Market Space Station Shop Simulator.

Ghost Receipt
Ghost Receipt is a cyberpunk pawnshop in a neon city. Its pitch centers on buying, selling, negotiating and uncovering item stories, making it the setting-focused alternative if you want pawn transactions without Probably Stolen’s station rent campaign. A listing places its release on 10 November 2026 and identifies a demo, so availability should be checked against the current store page.
Black Market Space Station Shop Simulator
This game uses the most literal shared premise: an ex-con runs a station general store while under watch. It was listed for 28 October 2026, the same day as Probably Stolen. The available description establishes the surveillance-and-shop setup, but not a full set of mechanics comparable to Probably Stolen’s nine paths, production chains and faction ledger.
Bots & Mods and Deepspace Emporium
Bots & Mods is a cyberpunk robot workshop, so repair and upgrading replace pawn-style buying and selling. Deepspace Emporium has a strikingly similar former-scavenger, illegal-goods and rising-rent premise; because the available listing is a close premise match rather than a documented review, treat it as a same-premise watchlist entry, not a proven mechanical equivalent.
How do the games differ in pressure and structure?
| Design axis | Probably Stolen | Closest alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Desk work | Inspect people and goods, haggle, report or conceal | Papers, Please emphasizes documents; Potionomics emphasizes negotiation; No Umbrellas Allowed emphasizes appraisal |
| Where stock comes from | Suppliers, customers, dumps, trading and production chains | Recettear uses markets and dungeons; Moonlighter uses dungeon loot; Potion Craft makes products in-house |
| Failure pressure | Rising rent, electricity, falling attractiveness and faction consequences | Recettear and Potionomics use debt; Potion Craft is more persistent and cozy |
| Adventure content | After-hours scavenging and teleport travel; no 3D station walk | Moonlighter and Recettear have combat-oriented expeditions |
| Tone | Dystopian cyberpunk, crime, drugs and corruption | Fantasy in Recettear, Moonlighter and Potionomics; grim moral management in Graveyard Keeper and HAWKER |
This is why Probably Stolen should be classified as a pure shop-and-management RPG with risky after-hours work, not as a Moonlighter-style dungeon crawler or a supermarket stocker.
Is Probably Stolen worth buying at launch?
The launch case is unusually strong for an indie shop sim. tinyBuild reported 200,000 copies sold in the first few hours, more than 86,000 peak concurrent players and a second-place position on Steam’s global top sellers; it also reported more than 660,000 unique demo players, a 98% positive demo rating, nearly 40,000 peak concurrent players during Steam Next Fest and more than 500,000 wishlists before launch. Steam’s store page showed 96% positive from 1,927 user reviews on 29 October 2026.
The list price is $19.99, €19.99 or £16.99. A 10% introductory discount reduced the US price to $17.99 and the UK price to £15.29 through 11 November 2026. Those prices were checked in October 2026 and are not permanent.

What the reviews disagree about
TheBigBois scored it 8.6/10 and praised the balance between economic hustle and faction intrigue, while flagging unfinished systems and water-purifier balance. DualShockers scored it 6.5/10, praising specialization, scavenging and customization but criticizing repetitive days, reused NPC lines and a small cassette soundtrack. Rock Paper Shotgun found substance in the kiosk loop but called the writing clipped and the soundtrack generic. There is no precise public Metacritic aggregate established here, so those scores should not be blended into a single average.
Launch hotfixes 1.0.0.1 and 1.0.0.2 addressed a reputation bug, ultrawide tooltips, a blackmail bug, the Water Purifier rework and cheaper water equipment. That makes the current build preferable to launch-day impressions, but it does not erase the central criticism: the daily retail loop can feel repetitive if you want constant action.
