profprov.dll Missing: Trace WMI Failures and Repair Windows Safely

profprov.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded because Windows cannot use its User Profile WMI Provider. profprov.dll is a Microsoft Windows component used by WMI classes such as Win32_UserProfile, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or ordinary application DLL.

The safest repair is to install pending Windows updates, then run DISM followed by System File Checker. Do not download a loose copy of profprov.dll and place it in System32; that can introduce malware, create an architecture mismatch, and leave the Windows component store damaged.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list to choose where to start:

  • The error appears across Windows features or several programs: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
  • Windows Security recently quarantined the file: review Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The problem began after an update, driver installation, or software change: try System Restore after checking system-file health.
  • Only one application reports the error: repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.
  • The file exists but Windows says it is invalid or not designed to run on Windows: check its location, digital signature, architecture, and dependent components.
  • The error mentions a procedure entry point or WMI failure: repair Windows first. Do not start by running regsvr32.

What profprov.dll does

Microsoft documents Profprov.dll as the DLL for the User Profile WMI Provider. Its provider schema is associated with UserProfileWmiProvider.mof, and it supports WMI classes related to user profiles and folder-redirection health.

That means Windows may use it for management, profile, and enterprise administration tasks even when you never launch a program that visibly belongs to it. A message mentioning this DLL does not prove that a game or third-party application owns the file.

The normal copy is supplied through Windows servicing. Its exact location can vary with the Windows installation and process architecture, so do not treat a copied file in an application folder as genuine merely because its name is correct.

Public file indexes list both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows builds, including a 64-bit build identified as 10.0.10586.0 and approximately 0.11 MB. These listings are identification clues, not instructions for choosing or installing a replacement. The correct file must match the installed Windows build and architecture.

Understand the error before changing anything

You may see messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because profprov.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because profprov.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading profprov.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”
  • “profprov.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library profprov.dll.”

“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that profprov.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load another DLL that it depends on. A damaged component store, incorrect architecture, antivirus quarantine, or broken WMI registration can produce similar symptoms.

Note what changed immediately before the error:

  • Windows Update or a failed feature upgrade
  • Disk cleanup or system-file removal
  • Malware detection or antivirus quarantine
  • User-profile migration
  • A driver, management tool, or application installation
  • A failure limited to one program

That context determines which repair path is most efficient.

Fix Windows Update problems first

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install all available updates.
  4. Restart Windows, even if the update process does not insist on it.
  5. Test the operation that produced the profprov.dll error.

Windows updates can replace missing protected files and complete interrupted component servicing. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than searching for a replacement DLL.

Check Windows Security quarantine

A security product may have removed a genuine file, or it may have detected a malicious file using the same name.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections and expand any entry that mentions profprov.dll.
  5. Check the file path, detection details, and signature information.
  6. Do not restore the file if it is unsigned, located in an unexpected application directory, or otherwise suspicious.
  7. If Microsoft Defender clearly quarantined a genuine Microsoft-signed Windows file, follow the available restore action and update Defender definitions.
  8. Restart Windows and test again.

After restoring a system file, run DISM and SFC. If malware is possible, run Scan options > Full scan. Do not create a broad exclusion simply to suppress the message.

Repair the Windows component store with DISM and SFC

This is the primary repair for a missing, damaged, or incompatible profprov.dll.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because progress appears slow.
  2. When DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Repeat the action that caused the error.

DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses as a source for protected files. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft recommends this order rather than running SFC first.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not use a random DLL archive. Use a matching official Windows installation source and follow Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance.

If you prefer help identifying what changed while you work through repeated DISM and SFC runs, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in repair commands remain the appropriate first step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the deeper DISM checks when RestoreHealth fails

For additional component-store diagnosis, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

CheckHealth reports whether corruption has already been marked. ScanHealth performs a more detailed scan. RestoreHealth attempts the repair.

If Windows Update cannot provide the repair files, DISM can use a matching Windows installation source with /Source and, where appropriate, /LimitAccess. The source must closely match the installed Windows edition, release, language, and architecture. Using an unrelated ISO or a copied profprov.dll can replace one problem with another.

Try a Windows repair reinstall

On eligible Windows 11 installations, Windows Update can reinstall the current version while preserving applications, files, and settings.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Recovery.
  3. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  4. Select Reinstall now.
  5. Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
  6. Restart and test the affected operation.

This option is not available on every Windows 11 installation. Availability can depend on the Windows version, update level, and device-management policies. It reinstalls the same Windows version and repairs system files and components.

Use System Restore after a recent system change

If the error began immediately after a driver change, software installation, update, or configuration change, System Restore may roll back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs while leaving personal files intact.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
  8. Sign in after Windows restarts and test again.

System Restore is not a substitute for malware cleanup or a backup. If no suitable restore point exists, continue with Windows repair or recovery options.

If only one application reports the error

A single application may display the message even when Windows is the actual owner of profprov.dll. First complete Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Then repair the affected application:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Select the application’s three-dot menu.
  3. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  4. Select Repair.
  5. If Repair does not help, select Reset only after confirming that the application’s local settings can be recreated.
  6. If neither option exists, uninstall the program.
  7. Download its installer only from the developer’s official source.
  8. Reinstall it and apply its latest updates.

For a game or managed application with a Verify, Repair files, or equivalent launcher option, use that feature. Reinstalling the owning program is the definitive fix only when the program actually owns the failing component. It does not replace repair of a damaged Windows system file.

Check architecture, path, and signature

A 32-bit application and a native 64-bit Windows process do not necessarily load files from the same system environment. Never replace a 64-bit file with a 32-bit build, or use a file from a different Windows release because its version number is higher.

To inspect a copy:

  1. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  2. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  3. Select the signature and choose Details.
  4. Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
  5. Open the Details tab and record the file description and version information.
  6. Record the complete path.

A file named profprov.dll in an application directory is not automatically genuine. If the file is unsigned, has an unexpected path, or appeared after a malware incident, quarantine it through your security process and repair Windows instead of trusting it.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

Do not routinely run:

regsvr32 profprov.dll

regsvr32 is for registering compatible self-registering COM DLLs. profprov.dll is a WMI provider whose operation depends on WMI registration and its MOF schema. Running regsvr32 against it does not restore the Windows component store, replace missing dependencies, or repair the correct provider registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair Windows first. Do not edit the registry or recompile the provider MOF file unless you are diagnosing a managed WMI environment with appropriate backups and administrative documentation.

Driver and Device Manager checks

A driver is not normally the direct owner of profprov.dll, but a recently changed driver or management package may explain why the error appeared.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the device category related to the recent change.
  3. Right-click the device and choose Properties.
  4. Review the Driver tab for the provider, date, and version.
  5. Use Roll Back Driver if the button is available and the problem began after that update.
  6. Otherwise choose Update Driver and follow Windows’ search options.
  7. Restart and test.

If you are manually hunting through many hardware vendors and versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers it identifies as outdated; the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and it does not replace Windows servicing when profprov.dll itself is corrupted.

Avoid loose DLL downloads

Downloading profprov.dll from an unofficial DLL site is unsafe and often ineffective. The file may be:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Unsigned or modified
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • From a different Windows release
  • Missing required dependencies
  • A malware payload using a trusted filename
  • In a location Windows does not use

There is no verified official standalone Microsoft download page for this DLL. Use Windows Update, DISM with a matching official repair source, Windows installation media, or a Windows repair reinstall.

If the error persists

Collect these details before escalating the issue:

  • Windows edition and build
  • The exact error text
  • The application or Windows feature that displays it
  • The complete path of any profprov.dll copy found
  • Whether the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature
  • Recent Windows Update, profile migration, antivirus, driver, or software changes
  • Relevant Event Viewer entries
  • DISM and SFC results

Open Event Viewer with Windows key + X > Event Viewer, then check Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the failure time. If every Windows repair succeeds but one program still fails, the visible profprov.dll message may be secondary to that program’s own dependency or installation problem.

FAQ

Is profprov.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. It is the DLL for Microsoft’s User Profile WMI Provider and is associated with WMI classes for user-profile management and folder-redirection health.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Usually not. No reviewed Microsoft source identifies profprov.dll as belonging to those runtime packages. Repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should profprov.dll be located?

It should be supplied within the Windows installation and loaded according to the process architecture and system configuration. Avoid assuming one universal path across every Windows release and architecture.

Can I copy it from another computer?

No. The other computer may have a different Windows build, edition, architecture, servicing state, or signature. Repair the installed Windows image with an appropriate Microsoft source.

Does the error mean WMI is broken?

Not necessarily. The file may be missing, a dependency may be unavailable, Windows components may be corrupt, or only one application may be failing. Repair Windows first, then investigate WMI registration if the evidence points there.

Will regsvr32 profprov.dll fix it?

Normally no. This is a WMI provider, not a DLL that should be repaired through routine manual registration. Use Windows servicing and the provider’s proper WMI registration mechanisms instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest first step?

Install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by sfc /scannow from an administrator Command Prompt.
