Why Alan Wake 2 stood out
Sony announced the lineup on October 1, 2025, with Remedy Entertainment’s psychological survival-horror sequel as its headline game. Its presence was notable: this was a prominent, award-nominated, story-driven horror release, rather than a small or older catalog pick. Alan Wake 2 follows returning writer Alan Wake and FBI agent Saga Anderson through Bright Falls, Watery, and the Dark Place. Investigation and narrative twists sit alongside limited-resource combat, with light serving as both a weapon and a refuge. Sony’s October 1 announcement describes the game and its promotion.

The game was offered for PS5 only. Saga’s Mind Place, a clue-mapping space used to connect evidence, is also described in NextPit’s September 28, 2025 report. PS4 owners could claim the other two monthly games, but not Alan Wake 2.

These were monthly games with a defined claim window, not a permanent addition announced for the Extra or Premium Game Catalog. Sony’s official lineup post lists all three titles and their platforms.

Which PS Plus membership was needed?
The October announcement was for PlayStation Plus members; it did not require Extra or Premium to claim the monthly games. Sony’s US PS Plus plans page lists monthly games among the benefits of Essential, Extra, and Premium. Extra adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics; Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming, and other benefits.
Sony also offered a separate Premium Game Trial for Midnight Murder Club beginning October 7, 2025. It allowed up to one hour of play, with progress and trophies carrying over if the player later purchased the full game. That trial was not one of the three monthly games.

When could subscribers claim the games?
The original claim window ran from Tuesday, October 7, through Monday, November 3, 2025. Sony’s October announcement said subscribers had until October 6 to add September’s monthly games—Psychonauts 2, Stardew Valley, and Viewfinder—to their libraries. Sony’s November 2025 lineup announcement confirmed that October’s games left the monthly rotation on November 3.
As of August 18, 2026, the promotion is long over. The original story matching the “chilling surprise” angle was published before Sony’s announcement, on September 28, 2025; the official dates show why its “just dropped” framing does not describe a current offer.

Does “fans are losing it” describe a verified reaction?
It is headline-style phrasing, not an established measure of fan response. The available reporting explains the lineup and why Alan Wake 2 was notable, but does not provide polling, a representative sample of social posts, sales data, or another quantified measure of reaction. The verifiable news is the game’s inclusion and its limited availability window.

- PS4 owners: Goat Simulator 3 and Cocoon were the two compatible monthly games.
- Groups looking for co-op: Goat Simulator 3 supported up to four players locally or online.
- Puzzle-adventure fans: Cocoon offered the more contemplative alternative.
For its original claim period, the mix paired a major single-player horror game with a co-op sandbox and a puzzle adventure. It is now useful as a record of that past promotion, not as a reason to subscribe in order to claim those October games.
