For most retro players, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is the better value. Its U.S. individual price is $49.99 per year, versus $159.99 for PlayStation Plus Premium, and it covers Nintendo’s NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy and Sega Genesis libraries, with GameCube Classics on Nintendo Switch 2. PlayStation Plus Premium is the better fit when the games you want are specifically in PlayStation’s Classics Catalog, or when game trials, cloud streaming and the broader Premium package matter as much as retro games. These services are not interchangeable archives: the right choice depends first on the console you own and the exact games you want to play.

Which subscription is cheaper for retro gaming?
Nintendo is dramatically less expensive for an individual subscription. The U.S. listings retrieved October 30, 2026 put Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack at $49.99 for 12 months, while PlayStation Plus Premium costs $159.99 for 12 months. That is a $110 difference over a year before considering any other benefits.

Prices are current U.S. listings checked October 30, 2026 and can change. Nintendo’s family membership changes the calculation further: Nintendo says that with eight people sharing an Expansion Pack family membership, the effective cost is about $10 per person per year. That makes it the strongest option for a household or group that can use all eight places.
Price alone does not make Premium a bad deal. It bundles current-game catalogs, trials and cloud streaming that Nintendo’s retro tiers do not provide. Compare the complete package if you also want those services; compare only the classic-game access if retro titles are your sole requirement.

What classic-game libraries does each service include?
The biggest difference is the source of the games. Nintendo’s service is organized around Nintendo and Sega-era consoles, while PlayStation Premium’s relevant feature is a changing Classics Catalog of PlayStation titles. A system label means selected games, not every release for that platform.
What does Nintendo Switch Online include?
The base Nintendo Switch Online membership provides NES, Super NES and Game Boy Classics, together with online features for supported games. Expansion Pack adds selected Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy and Sega Genesis games. On Nintendo Switch 2, Expansion Pack also provides access to selected GameCube Classics.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Selected” is important. A subscription to the N64 or Game Boy Advance collection does not promise the complete historical library for that system. The catalog is an ongoing service, and Nintendo can add, change or remove available titles.
Expansion Pack also includes selected downloadable content at no additional charge: the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass, Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise and Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion are named examples. You must own the relevant base game separately, and the DLC benefit depends on maintaining an active membership.
What does PlayStation Plus Premium include?
PlayStation Plus Premium includes the Classics Catalog along with the Game Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming, online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, cloud storage, Share Play and other Premium benefits. PlayStation explicitly says the Classics Catalog is not included with the Extra tier, so Extra is not a substitute if classic games are your reason for subscribing.

The Classics Catalog is not a permanent, fixed archive. PlayStation’s catalog availability determines which titles you can use, and the service’s current terms apply. PlayStation also says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026, another reason to check the live catalog rather than assume a regular release schedule.
For a specific PlayStation-era favorite, verify that exact title in the current Classics Catalog before paying. The service may be excellent for one player’s desired games and disappointing for another’s because the two libraries are built around different console histories.
Can you download these classics, or do you have to stream them?
PlayStation has the clearest access distinction: applicable Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles may be downloadable or streamable on PS4 or PS5, depending on the game and service terms, but the Classics Catalog includes a wide selection of classic PlayStation 3 games that are available by streaming only. Those PS3 entries are not local downloads, so they require a supported internet connection whenever you play them.
Nintendo’s official service descriptions present classic-game applications as downloadable software tied to the relevant system collections. That does not establish identical offline behavior for every Nintendo title, so check the individual game’s requirements if offline play is critical. In either ecosystem, membership access is not the same as buying a permanent copy.
If your connection is unreliable, prioritize titles explicitly offered for download and treat streaming-only entries as a separate category. If you want the convenience of trying a game without installing it, Premium’s streaming option can be useful, but it does not erase the need for a stable connection or guarantee that every classic supports streaming.

Which console do you need?
Your hardware narrows the decision before price does. Nintendo’s classic applications are designed for Nintendo Switch, while the GameCube collection is a Nintendo Switch 2 advantage: Nintendo says GameCube Classics are exclusive to Switch 2 and are not available on the original Switch hardware.
PlayStation Plus Premium is designed around PlayStation hardware. Premium members can use applicable catalog titles on PS4 or PS5, with the exact download or streaming method determined by each title. A Nintendo console cannot access PlayStation’s Classics Catalog, and a PlayStation cannot access Nintendo’s collections.
For a Switch 2 owner specifically interested in GameCube games, Expansion Pack is the only service in this comparison that addresses that library. For someone who owns only a PS4 or PS5 and wants PlayStation-era releases, Premium is the relevant option even though its annual fee is higher.
What do you get beyond the retro libraries?
Premium’s extras are broad: a current Game Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming, online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play. These benefits can justify the price for a player who wants one PlayStation subscription for both older and newer games.
Expansion Pack’s extras are more Nintendo-specific. In addition to its larger classic-game range, it includes selected DLC and Switch 2-exclusive features. The DLC can offset the subscription cost only if you already own the base games and would otherwise pay for those expansions; it is not a license for the base games themselves.

The base Nintendo Switch Online tier is a sensible alternative when your target systems stop at NES, Super NES and Game Boy. Paying for Expansion Pack solely to obtain those three libraries is unnecessary; the upgrade becomes relevant for GBA, N64, Virtual Boy, Genesis, selected DLC or Switch 2 GameCube access.
Which service fits your type of retro player?
- Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack — best overall retro value. Choose it for Nintendo’s first-party history, the broadest mix of Nintendo system collections in this comparison, the lower individual annual price, family sharing or Switch 2 GameCube Classics.
- PlayStation Plus Premium — best for a PlayStation-first library. Choose it when the Classics Catalog contains the games you specifically want and you also value trials, streaming, current catalog games and the other Premium benefits.
- Nintendo Switch Online — best for a focused 8-bit and 16-bit selection. Choose the base plan if NES, Super NES and Game Boy are enough and you do not need GBA, N64, Virtual Boy, Genesis, GameCube Classics or the included DLC.
How we picked these rankings
The order weighs the exact retro systems included, the U.S. annual individual price, family economics, hardware requirements, download-versus-streaming access and useful benefits beyond classics. It does not assume that a larger-sounding catalog is better: the deciding factor is whether the service actually contains the games you want.
How should you decide before subscribing?
Use this short check rather than choosing by brand loyalty:
- Write down the games, not just the console. Search for each must-play title in the current service catalog. System labels cover selected games, so a favorite on a listed platform may still be absent.
- Match the list to your hardware. Confirm whether you have a compatible Switch, Switch 2, PS4 or PS5. Treat Switch 2 GameCube Classics as a Switch 2-only feature.
- Choose the access method you can live with. On PlayStation, identify any PS3 classics that are streaming-only. On Nintendo, review the individual title’s requirements if offline use matters.
- Add the non-retro value. Include PlayStation trials and cloud streaming, or Nintendo’s included DLC and family sharing, only when you will use them. Otherwise, the annual retro price is the cleaner comparison.
What limitations should you expect?
- Catalogs can change. Neither company guarantees permanent access to every subscription title. A game available today may leave later, so a subscription is not the same as purchasing ownership.
- Platform names are not complete libraries. Nintendo’s NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA, N64, Virtual Boy, Genesis and GameCube labels refer to selected games, not every release for those systems.
- Premium costs more because it is broader. Its $159.99 annual price includes benefits beyond retro games. Comparing that figure with $49.99 is fair for a retro-only budget, but incomplete if you will use trials, streaming or current catalog games.
- There is no stable apples-to-apples game count. Official service descriptions establish broad, changing catalogs but do not provide one directly comparable total that should be used as a permanent scorecard.
Is PS Plus Premium worth it if I only want classic games?
It can be, but only when the Classics Catalog contains your target games or you value Premium’s other features. If your priorities are Nintendo systems, family sharing or the lowest annual cost, Expansion Pack is the stronger fit; check the current PlayStation listing title by title before committing.
Does Nintendo Switch Online include GameCube games on the original Switch?
No. Nintendo identifies GameCube Classics as a Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive Expansion Pack feature. The original Switch can use the other applicable classic collections, but it does not receive that GameCube collection.

What happens to downloaded classics when a membership expires?
Subscription access should be treated as conditional rather than permanent ownership. If a membership lapses, do not assume a downloaded collection will remain playable, and remember that a title can also leave the catalog while your subscription is active.
How can I avoid paying for the wrong retro catalog?
Start with a short list of specific games and check each service’s current catalog and platform requirements. This catches two common surprises: a system collection containing only selected releases and a PlayStation classic that is available only through streaming.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play PlayStation 3 classics without an internet connection?
The PS3 classics described for the Classics Catalog are streaming-only, so they are not installed as local games. You need an internet connection and a supported streaming setup whenever you play those entries.
Are Nintendo’s included DLC packs permanent purchases?
No. The DLC benefit is tied to an active Expansion Pack membership, and you must own each base game separately. If the membership ends, the subscription-based access should not be treated as a standalone DLC purchase.
Should I choose the monthly or annual PlayStation Premium plan for a short retro project?
The U.S. listings offer one-month, three-month and 12-month terms. A short-term plan can make sense if you are completing a specific catalog selection, while the annual term has the lowest average monthly cost among the listed options.
Does a Nintendo family membership require everyone to buy the same games?
The family option changes how the membership fee is shared, not which individual games you own. Each player should still verify that the classic collection or included DLC meets their own needs and that the relevant base game is owned where required.
