If you own a PS4 or PS5 and want to play its library on a PC screen, PS Remote Play is the better choice for most people. It streams your console’s game, keeping its library, trophies and official online features. PS4 emulation with shadPS4 is a different, still early option: it runs selected PS4 games on the PC itself and can improve resolution or frame rate, but compatibility is limited and the setup is more involved. The right choice depends on whether you want reliable access to games you already own—or a specific title and the possibility of enhancements.

What is the difference between Remote Play and PS4 emulation?
Remote Play streams a game running on your PlayStation; emulation attempts to run a PS4 game on your PC. That distinction determines what hardware you need, which games work, and whether the PC can improve the picture or performance.

Sony’s PS Remote Play app connects to your PS4 or PS5. The console renders the game and encodes its screen as video; the PC decodes that stream and sends controller input back. As Marcus Bell wrote for Shattered on 28 October 2026: “Remote Play is a streaming trick, not an emulator. Your PS5 runs the game, encodes the screen as video, and sends it over the network to the PS Remote Play app.”
That means you can play the games installed on your console—including PS5 games when a PS5 is the host—without transferring or installing them on the PC. The PC’s graphics card is not responsible for rendering the game, so a discrete GPU is not required by Sony’s listed PC specifications.

shadPS4 runs selected PS4 games on the PC
In October 2026, shadPS4 is the prominent PS4 emulator for PC. It is free and open source, with Windows, Linux and macOS builds. Its official site is shadps4.net. The stable core is v0.20.0, released on 14 October 2026; the project’s graphical QtLauncher had builds through 26 October.
Emulation does not mean the entire PS4 library is ready to play. shadPS4 has to reproduce the console’s system and graphics behavior, and a game can have its own issues with rendering, audio, crashes or performance. Compatibility therefore needs to be checked title by title.

Which is better if I already own a PS4 or PS5?
For playing your console library on a PC monitor, choose Remote Play first. You keep access to games installed on the host console, including PS5 games via a PS5, with the console’s PSN and trophy functionality; shadPS4 cannot replace a PS5 or its library.
Remote Play also avoids the work of preparing game data and tuning individual emulator settings. The trade-off is that the PC receives a video stream rather than the console’s original rendered output. That introduces network-dependent image quality and latency, and the official picture ceiling is lower than a capable PC may achieve through emulation.
Remote Play itself is free and does not require PlayStation Plus. Do not confuse it with PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming: that is a separate, region-limited service that runs games on Sony’s servers, rather than streaming from your own console.
Can I play PS4 games on PC without a console?
Not through Remote Play: it requires a PS4 or PS5 to run the game. shadPS4 can run some PS4 titles on a PC without a console connected, but it is not a reliable way to access the whole PS4 catalog, and you need your own game data.
If you do not own a console, first check whether the specific game has an official PC release. For games with native PC ports, the port is generally the more straightforward route: it is made to run on PC and avoids both a console-to-PC stream and title-by-title emulator compatibility. Sony-published examples with PC versions include God of War, Spider-Man, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Availability and features vary by title.
A native port is distinct from a single-game community project. Bloodborne, for example, has separate Windows and Linux recompilation or port projects; these are not Sony products and still require a game dump. The Bloodborne PC community wiki’s 23 October 2026 guidance favors a native port for players interested only in that game, while suggesting shadPS4 for people who also want to try other PS4 titles. Its Linux example reported about 90 fps at 4K with FSR 4 Balanced on an RX 7800 XT; that is a specific community example, not a general performance guarantee.

How good is PS Remote Play on a PC?
Remote Play can be a convenient way to use your console from a desk, another room or away from home, but it depends on a stable network and does not turn a PC into a 4K PlayStation. Sony’s stated broadband floor is 5 Mbps upload and download; 15 Mbps is recommended for a stable, higher-quality stream. Sony does not publish a public millisecond latency guarantee.
Resolution and frame rate
- PS5: up to 1080p at 60 fps. Sony documentation summarized by Tech Insider (21 September 2026), PlayRoam (20 October 2026) and Game Console Spin (30 September 2026) gives this ceiling. There is no official 4K Remote Play mode.
- Base PS4: Sony lists 360p, 540p and 720p choices. Game Console Spin (30 September 2026) reports a cap of 720p/30 fps for base PS4 sessions. A third-party client’s higher-resolution setting cannot create a higher-resolution source from a base PS4.
- PS4 Pro: third-party client documentation recommends 1080p, but the console and official client’s available choices still matter. Do not assume that a 4K display or app setting means the console is sending a native 4K stream.
Full-screen mode on a 4K monitor enlarges the stream; it does not capture the console at 4K. PlayRoam put it plainly on 20 October 2026: “Full screen enlarges the video; it does not turn it into a native 4K stream.” Sony documents HDR Remote Play on Windows when a compatible display is used with HDR enabled and Microsoft’s HEVC extension installed.
Network and latency
Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum in each direction is a floor, not a promise of consistently sharp, responsive play. The 15 Mbps recommendation is a more useful target for a high-quality stream, but connection stability and latency also matter. Connecting the console to the router by Ethernet can help; wiring only the PC does not remove a weak wireless hop between the console and router.
For play outside the home, the console must be reachable and both the home connection and client connection need to remain stable. Remote Play still streams from your own console, so its responsiveness depends on the network path and console video encoding—not on a cloud gaming server’s advertised response time. Sony has not published a Remote Play latency SLA, and there is no independent 2026 head-to-head lab comparison timing official Remote Play against shadPS4 on the same game and setup.
PC requirements and supported devices
Sony’s listed Windows requirements are a 7th-generation Intel Core processor or later, 100 MB of free disk space and a 1024 × 768 display. A discrete graphics card is not required for the official desktop client. The Windows client supports 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11.
For macOS, the published information is inconsistent: Tech Insider reported on 21 September 2026 that Remote Play 9.5.0 dropped Big Sur, while Shattered said on 28 October that Sony’s requirements page still listed Big Sur through Tahoe. Check the current Sony requirements for the Mac in question rather than assuming the lower minimum is reliable. Sony’s app line was reported as version 9.5.0 for Windows, macOS and Android in September 2026. Android 10 support was dropped on 2 September 2026, making Android 11 the reported minimum; iOS and iPadOS support is listed from version 15, and Android TV is also supported.
Supported hosts include PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro and PS4 with current system software. If you want to wake the console from rest mode, enable “Stay Connected to the Internet” and “Enable Turning on PS5 from Network” on PS5. PS4 menu wording differs, and some remote features require the PS4 to be the account’s primary console. VR-required titles are excluded from Remote Play.
How do I set up Remote Play on a PC?
You need a PS4 or PS5 with the game installed, a supported Windows or Mac computer, a PlayStation account and a DualShock 4 or DualSense controller. Sony recommends a USB connection for the first controller connection; use a data-capable cable, not one that only charges.

- Prepare the console. Install its latest system software and sign in to the PlayStation account you intend to use. In the console’s Remote Play settings, enable Remote Play. If you need to wake it from rest mode, turn on the network connection and network wake options described above.
- Install the PC client. Download Sony’s PS Remote Play desktop app from PlayStation’s official source, not a “cracked” installer or an imitation download page. The PC app is called PS Remote Play; it is not the PlayStation mobile app.
- Connect the controller. Connect a DualShock 4 or DualSense to the PC by USB for the first session. Sony’s PC setup guidance, quoted by Shattered on 28 October 2026, says: “Use a USB cable to connect your controller to your PC or Mac.” Once paired, Bluetooth may work on supported operating systems. Sony’s platform-specific controller guidance includes DualSense on Android 12 or later, DualSense Edge on Android 14 or iOS 16.4 or later, and DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth from Android 10.
- Sign in and select the console. Open PS Remote Play, sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the host, and follow the app’s prompts to connect to the PS5 or PS4. If the console is not found, confirm Remote Play is enabled and that the host is online or configured for network wake.
- Improve the connection if needed. Start with the console wired to the router where possible, then check whether the connection improves on a stable network. Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation refer to both upload and download capacity; a fast PC connection alone cannot compensate for a poor console-side link.
Is shadPS4 ready for the PS4 library?
No. shadPS4 can run some games, but the public compatibility figures show that “PS4 emulation” is not yet equivalent to a ready-to-play catalog. A 21 October 2026 snapshot of the Windows compatibility list counted 989 tested titles: 166 Playable and 293 Ingame. The same dated explainer reported 212 Playable titles on Linux. Those are tested-list counts, not percentages of the entire commercial PS4 catalog.
The categories matter. “Playable” is a stricter status than “Ingame”; a title that reaches gameplay may still have serious crashes, hangs, broken graphics or audio. The snapshot works out to about 17% Playable among the 989 Windows-tested entries, not 17% of every PS4 game released.

Wikipedia’s compatibility section cited 179 Playable and 317 Ingame in November 2025, but the dates and tested-title denominators differ. A raw comparison does not establish that games have become less compatible.
Games named in 2026 coverage include Bloodborne, Gravity Rush and Gravity Rush Remastered, God of War III Remastered, Dark Souls Remastered, Red Dead Redemption, Persona 5, The Last Guardian, Driveclub and Resident Evil 2. A game being mentioned is not proof that it is Playable. Komputronik reported The Last of Us Part II was still unsuitable for normal play, and developers continued to describe shadPS4 as early software with crashes and graphics errors.
Can shadPS4 run Bloodborne well on PC?
High-end play has been demonstrated, but Bloodborne’s official shadPS4 compatibility records still rate it Ingame. These statements are not contradictory: a powerful PC and community patches can produce a strong result without changing the emulator’s official compatibility category.
As of 23 October 2026, the official records for CUSA03173 and CUSA00900 on Windows, Linux and macOS, tied to game version 1.09, were all rated Ingame. The Bloodborne PC community wiki explains that this means the game reaches gameplay but can have serious problems such as crashes, hangs or broken graphics or audio.
Digital Foundry’s Sam Machkovech reported on 17 January 2026 that an RTX 4080 and Core i9-13900K could deliver nearly locked 60 fps at 4K in a test with shader caching off; the report said 60 fps was reached 99% of the time, with remaining hitching. The demonstration involved settings and patches including FIFO vsync, async logging, extra DRAM allocation, v-blank changes, task-splitting and graphics-heap patches, with an optional Vertex Explosion Fix. Above 120 fps, a run-button slide bug appears, so the report advised capping the frame rate at 120 fps. This is an existence proof on high-end hardware—not a typical PC requirement or a guarantee for other games.
Digital Foundry also noted that Bloodborne remains at 1080p and 30 fps on PlayStation hardware. shadPS4 can therefore be attractive to a player pursuing higher resolution or frame rate, provided they accept the emulator’s current issues and the effort of configuring a particular game.

What PC hardware does shadPS4 need?
shadPS4 is much more demanding than Remote Play, and there is no official four-tier hardware specification sheet comparable to the project’s requirements pages for some mature emulators. The following is a synthesis of 2026 setup guides, not a guaranteed minimum for every game.
- CPU: at least four cores and six threads, above 2.5 GHz, with x86-64-v3 support. Intel Haswell or AMD Excavator and newer are cited as architecture examples. Digitaloft’s August 2026 guide recommends a modern six-core processor, such as a Ryzen 5 5600X or Core i5-12600K.
- GPU: Vulkan 1.3 support, including swapchain and push-descriptor extensions. Community guides cite 2 GB of VRAM as a floor and 4 GB or more as a more practical level for 3D games.
- Memory: 8 GB appears as a minimum in shadPS4-focused pages, while several 2026 setup guides recommend 16 GB.
- Operating system: 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, Linux (one wiki lists Ubuntu 22.04 or later), or macOS 26 or later on Apple Silicon. Intel Macs are unsupported.
These figures do not guarantee that a named game will run well. Komputronik reported on 29 October 2026 that experimental PS4 emulation can be more demanding than mature PS3 emulation and that performance remains low in many PS4 games. The Bloodborne result on an RTX 4080-class PC should be read as a high-end example, not as a minimum spec for the emulator.

shadPS4 does not supply commercial games. You need your own dumped game data, such as a PKG or a decrypted game folder containing files such as eboot.bin and sce_sys. Do not download games you do not own: downloading commercial game data without permission can infringe copyright.
Emulator software is widely treated as legal, but the legality of the complete process depends on jurisdiction and how the games and system files were obtained. The cautious route described by Komputronik is a backup of a game you own and firmware dumped from your own console. This is general information, not legal advice; local rules can differ.
Whether shadPS4 itself requires a firmware dump is not consistently described in October 2026 materials. An August comparison table says user-dumped official PS4 firmware is required; a 29 October setup guide says shadPS4 needs no PS4 BIOS and only needs decrypted game data; Bloodborne setup material discusses firmware modules and a trophy key. Because these claims conflict, consult the current shadPS4 Quickstart for your build rather than relying on a blanket answer or following an unofficial firmware tutorial.
Be wary of fake “PS4 emulator” sites, survey gates and paid executable installers. The emulator project and official Sony Remote Play app are free; a site demanding payment for a supposed cracked Remote Play installer or promising a universal, effortless PS4 emulator is not a trustworthy shortcut.

How do third-party Remote Play clients compare?
If Sony’s official PC client has a picture, mapping or operating-system limitation, there are unofficial alternatives. They still stream from your own PlayStation and do not install PS4 or PS5 games on the computer; Sony has not endorsed them, and changes to console software or access methods can affect compatibility.
chiaki-ng
chiaki-ng is free and open source, with Windows, Linux and macOS builds, including support useful on Linux handheld PCs. Its documented presets range from 360p to 1080p and 30 to 60 fps. Its documentation recommends 1080p for PS5, 720p for base PS4 and 1080p for PS4 Pro. It is the practical alternative to consider on Linux or Steam Deck, where Sony does not provide an official desktop client.

PXPlay
PXPlay, formerly PSPlay, is a paid third-party client. PlayRoam listed its Windows, Linux and macOS PC license at €12.99 as a one-time purchase on 20 October 2026; the US Android listing was $6.99, with mobile and desktop purchases separate. A PC demo is available from the developer. Advertised 2K or 4K output is upscaling of the console stream, not native 4K capture. Game Console Spin cited desktop version 2.0.0 in March 2026 for a lower-latency and 4K video path, but that does not remove the source-resolution limit.
Which one should I try?
Start with Sony’s free official app on Windows and a DualShock 4 or DualSense connected over USB. On Linux or Steam Deck, chiaki-ng is the relevant route. Consider PXPlay if the official client’s picture or controller mapping is not working for you and its separate license cost makes sense. Avoid treating third-party app claims about upscaling as evidence of a native 4K stream.

Is PS4 emulation the same as RPCS3?
No. RPCS3 emulates PlayStation 3; shadPS4 targets PlayStation 4. October 2026 headlines that say roughly 80% of PS3 games are Playable on PC refer to RPCS3, not shadPS4.
Overclock3D reported on 21 October 2026 that RPCS3 had 80.02% Playable among its tracked games: 2,855 titles, up from 2,558 in January, while titles in the loadable or intro categories fell from 104 to 25. Those figures describe RPCS3’s PS3 compatibility list and cannot be transferred to PS4 emulation. shadPS4’s October Windows snapshot was 166 Playable out of 989 tested.
RPCS3 is a more mature project, but it also requires users to supply game data and official PS3 system software. DSOGaming’s 17 April 2026 summary of RPCS3’s recommended tier cited a Ryzen 5 5600 or Core i5-10400, 16 GB RAM and an RTX 2060 or RX 5600 XT; its 4K tier cited a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RTX 4070 or RX 7800 XT. Those are RPCS3 recommendations, not shadPS4 requirements.
Which option should I choose?
- You own a PS4 or PS5 and want your games on a PC monitor: use Remote Play. It is the simplest official path and preserves console-side access to PSN, trophies and the library installed on the host.
- You want to play away from the TV: Remote Play is designed for that, provided the console can stay online and both ends have a stable connection.
- You use Linux or a Steam Deck: Sony has no official Linux desktop client, so chiaki-ng is the relevant Remote Play option. shadPS4 also has Linux builds, but that does not make its game compatibility universal.
- You want Bloodborne above the console’s 1080p30 presentation: shadPS4 has demonstrated higher-resolution, higher-frame-rate play on high-end hardware, but official compatibility remains Ingame and the showcased result used patches and tweaks.
- You want the broadest possible PS4 catalog without a console: neither option guarantees that. shadPS4’s tested list remains a minority Playable, and a third-party Remote Play client still needs your console.
- The game has an official PC port: compare the native port first. A port may offer PC-specific settings and features without the network stream of Remote Play or the per-game uncertainty of emulation.

Does Remote Play use Sony’s cloud servers to run my game?
No. Remote Play connects to the PS4 or PS5 you own; the console renders the game and streams its output. PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming is a separate service that runs games on Sony servers.
Can I use a 4K monitor to get a sharper Remote Play image?
A 4K monitor can display the stream full-screen, but enlarging a 1080p-or-lower stream does not make it a native 4K capture. Sony did not offer an official 4K Remote Play mode in 2026.
Why do PS3 emulation numbers look much better than PS4 emulation numbers?
They describe different projects and different console generations: RPCS3 is the mature PS3 emulator, while shadPS4 is the PS4 emulator. RPCS3’s compatibility figures are not evidence of shadPS4’s readiness.
