That was a milestone, not a final lifetime total. PlayStation’s current official history page puts PS2 sales at over 160 million worldwide, making the measured PS3 total less than half that figure.
How many PS3s did Sony sell?
Sony Computer Entertainment announced on November 6, 2013 that the PS3 had reached 80 million cumulative worldwide sales as of November 2. The console was then in its seventh year, having launched in November 2006. Sony’s announcement is a dated sales snapshot; it does not establish the PS3’s final lifetime total. How does that compare with PS2 sales?
The familiar 150 million PS2 figure is also a dated milestone: Sony said cumulative worldwide sales reached that number as of January 31, 2011, 10 years and 11 months after the console’s Japanese release. PlayStation’s official history page now reports over 160 million PS2 consoles sold worldwide since 2000. It does not specify when that updated total was reached. | PS2: 150 million | Cumulative worldwide sales as of January 31, 2011, announced February 14, 2011. | 70 million more; 80 million is about 53% of this milestone. |
| PS2: over 160 million | Current figure on PlayStation’s official history page, accessed in 2026; no specific as-of date is stated. | More than 80 million more; the PS3 milestone is less than half this total. |

What the numbers do—and do not—show
On either benchmark, the PS3’s 80 million figure falls well short of the PS2’s reported total. But these figures compare cumulative worldwide units for different consoles at different points in time; they are not a same-period market-share comparison. In particular, the 2013 PS3 milestone should not be read as its final lifetime result.
Sony’s 2013 release described the PS3 as having evolved through software updates and features, and listed games including The Last of Us, Journey and Gran Turismo 6 as contemporary platform context. The release also said PlayStation Network launched alongside the PS3. Those details document the company’s account of the platform, but do not show that any one game, feature or service caused its sales.
