PS5 cloud streaming lets a PlayStation Plus Premium member play selected PS5 games from Sony’s servers instead of downloading them. You can start streams on a PS5 console, and supported PS5 titles can also run on a PlayStation Portal. You need a PlayStation account, broadband internet and an active Premium subscription; Portal streaming additionally needs the Portal hardware and an adult account. Sony sets 5 Mbps upload and download as the session minimum, while its Portal guidance lists 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. The catalog is selective, changes over time and varies by region, so a game finder—not the name “PS5 game”—determines eligibility.
What is PS5 cloud streaming and what does it include?
Cloud streaming runs the game on remote PlayStation hardware and sends the video and audio to your screen while your controller inputs travel back to the server. Because the game is processed remotely, an eligible title can start without a full installation on your PS5 or Portal. Streaming is a benefit of the PlayStation Plus Premium tier; Essential and Extra do not include it.

On Portal, it is a separate Cloud Streaming experience on the Home screen. In both cases, you are limited to titles Sony has enabled for streaming in your account’s market. Streaming is not a way to turn every PS5 purchase into a cloud game, and it is not the same as Remote Play from your own console.
What do I need for PS5 cloud streaming?
The requirements are straightforward, but each one matters. Missing any of them can prevent the stream from starting even when your connection is fast enough.
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
- PlayStation Plus Premium: Cloud Streaming is listed under Premium. Essential and Extra subscriptions do not provide this feature.
- PlayStation account: The account must be in a country where the service operates, and the game must be eligible for that account’s region.
- Broadband internet: Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download to establish a session.
- A supported device: Use a PS5 console, or use a PlayStation Portal for the titles Sony marks as Portal-compatible. Portal streaming cannot be used without the Portal device.
- An adult account for Portal cloud streaming: Child accounts cannot use the Portal cloud-streaming feature.
A Premium subscription does not guarantee that a particular game, country or hardware path is enabled. Check the current title listing and your local PlayStation service page before subscribing solely for one game.
How much internet speed do I need for 720p or 1080p?
Sony publishes several thresholds rather than one universal number. Treat them as minimums, not promises of perfect image quality: congestion, Wi-Fi interference, latency and the game itself can change the result.
| Use case | Sony’s stated requirement | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Starting a cloud session | 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download | The minimum Sony gives for establishing a stream. |
| Portal at 720p | 7 Mbps | The minimum listed on Sony’s Portal support guidance. |
| Portal at 1080p | 13 Mbps | The Portal page’s 1080p threshold. |
| 1080p Premium recommendation | 15 Mbps | A separate Sony PlayStation Plus support page’s 1080p figure. |
The 13 Mbps and 15 Mbps figures are not contradictory service tiers. They come from different Sony guidance pages, so use 13 Mbps as the Portal-page minimum and 15 Mbps as the more conservative target for 1080p. Upload speed matters because your controls and other upstream traffic must reach Sony’s servers; a fast download rate alone is not enough.
Run a speed test on the same network and in the same room where you will play. Pause large downloads, cloud backups and 4K video uploads while testing. If a stream continually drops resolution or disconnects despite meeting the published minimum, the bottleneck may be consistency or latency rather than headline bandwidth.
Which PS5 games can I stream?
The eligible library comes from three sources: select digital PS5 games in your PlayStation Store library, hundreds of games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, and select free-to-play games. Sony changes eligibility and applies different catalogs by country or region, so there is no permanent universal list.
Use Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder for the current, title-level answer. Search there before buying a game or upgrading a subscription; a PS5 label in the store does not by itself establish cloud eligibility.

Examples Sony gave at Portal launch
In its November 5, 2025 Portal announcement, Sony listed launch examples from users’ digital libraries including Astro Bot, Borderlands 4, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Fortnite, Ghost of Yōtei, Grand Theft Auto V and Resident Evil 4. Catalog examples included Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy, Sword of the Sea and The Last of Us Part II Remastered.
Those names illustrate the launch offering, not a lifetime guarantee. Licensing, catalog rotations, regional rights and technical support can remove or add titles. Check the game finder immediately before playing if access to one specific game is important.
How do I start cloud streaming on a PS5?
On a PS5 console, the process is built into PlayStation Plus and does not require you to install the selected game first.

- Sign in to the PlayStation account that holds the Premium membership.
- Open PlayStation Plus from the PS5 home screen.
- Go to Game Catalog and open a title marked as available to stream.
- Select Stream rather than the download option.
- Wait for the connection check and launch sequence, then play with your connected controller.
If the Stream button is missing, verify the account’s Premium status and region, then confirm the title in the current Cloud Streaming Game Finder. A game can remain downloadable while lacking a streaming entitlement.
How do I use cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal?
Portal places the streaming controls on its Home screen. The device must be online, signed in to an eligible adult account and running a title Sony supports for Portal cloud streaming.
- Wake the Portal and connect it to a broadband Wi-Fi network.
- On the Home screen, select the Cloud Streaming tab.
- Choose a game from Cloud Streaming with PlayStation Plus Premium, PlayStation Plus streaming games or an eligible title under Your Library.
- Select the game and launch the stream.
- If a queue appears, wait for a server slot; joining the queue does not indicate that your account or device is broken.
Portal cloud streaming is independent of whether your PS5 is switched on at home. It is therefore useful when the console is occupied or unavailable, but it still depends on Sony’s supported markets, game list and network thresholds.
What is the difference between streaming on PS5 and on Portal?
Both paths use Premium and the same selective catalog, but they serve different situations. The PS5 path is a television-console experience; Portal is a portable remote-player device with its own cloud-streaming tab and adult-account restriction.
| Comparison | PS5 console streaming | PlayStation Portal cloud streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | PS5 console | PlayStation Portal required |
| Subscription | PlayStation Plus Premium | PlayStation Plus Premium |
| Game eligibility | Select digital library games, catalog titles and select free-to-play games | Only titles Sony marks as supported for Portal cloud streaming |
| Account age | Premium account requirements apply | Adult account required; child accounts cannot use the feature |
| Connection guidance | 5 Mbps up and down to start; Sony recommends 15 Mbps for 1080p on its broader Premium page | 5 Mbps to start, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p on the Portal page |
| Where you play | TV or monitor connected to the PS5 | Portal’s built-in screen, wherever supported broadband is available |
| Unavailable functions while streaming | Broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, HD Camera and PlayStation Camera, mouse and keyboard, PSVR and third-party controllers are unsupported | |
What can’t I do while a game is streaming?
Sony’s catalog support guidance lists several restrictions that apply while the cloud session is active. You cannot broadcast the stream, start Share Play or Share Screen, or use Remote Play at the same time. HD Camera and PlayStation Camera features, mouse and keyboard input, PSVR and third-party controllers are also unsupported.
Recommended Free Tools
These limits matter for multiplayer streaming setups, accessibility hardware and content creators. A title that normally supports a camera, VR mode or keyboard on a local installation may not provide that function in the cloud session. Check the game’s own control requirements before relying on streaming for a particular setup.
High demand can also place you in a queue. A queue is a capacity issue on the service side, not a measurement of your broadband speed. Waiting, trying later or switching to a locally installed copy are the practical alternatives when one appears.
Where is PS5 cloud streaming available?
Sony lists the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and numerous European countries as supported markets, while excluding overseas territories. The exact country list can change, and the games offered within a supported country can differ from neighboring regions.
Your account country, payment region and the location from which you connect can therefore affect what appears in the catalog. Do not assume that a game shown in a US announcement is available to an account registered elsewhere. Use the service and game finder presented for your own PlayStation region.

How much does the required subscription cost?
Cloud Streaming is included only with PlayStation Plus Premium. On Sony’s US plan page accessed in 2026, Premium was displayed at $19.99 monthly, $54.99 quarterly and $159.99 annually. These are US prices shown at that time; plans, taxes, currencies and prices can change, and other countries may use different billing periods.
| Billing term | US price displayed in 2026 | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $19.99 | Current displayed price at access; not a permanent rate. |
| Quarterly | $54.99 | Current displayed price at access; regional pricing may differ. |
| Annually | $159.99 | Current displayed price at access; plans and prices can change. |
Choose Premium when the streaming library, classic catalog and other Premium benefits justify the recurring fee for you. If you only want one game and it is available locally, buying or downloading it may avoid paying for a tier whose central feature you will rarely use.
Why is a stream blurry, laggy or unavailable?
Work through the checks below in order; each addresses a different failure mode.
- Confirm eligibility: Look up the exact title in the current game finder and verify that your account’s country is supported.
- Check membership: Make sure the signed-in account has Premium rather than Essential or Extra.
- Measure both directions: Test upload and download speed. A session can fail when download capacity is adequate but upload capacity is below Sony’s minimum.
- Reduce competing traffic: Stop downloads, backups and high-bandwidth video on the same connection, then retry.
- Check account type on Portal: Portal cloud streaming requires an adult account.
- Allow for service capacity: If a queue is shown, wait and try again later; changing local settings will not remove a server queue.
- Use a local install when a feature is essential: Broadcasting, Share Play, cameras, VR, mouse and keyboard and third-party controllers are not supported in the cloud session.
Is PS5 cloud streaming worth using?
It is worthwhile for Premium members who want to sample supported games without waiting for downloads, play from a Portal when the PS5 is unavailable, or access a rotating catalog on a compatible connection. It is a poor substitute for local play when you need the entire PS5 library, disc-based ownership, guaranteed availability, broadcast tools, VR, specialist peripherals or consistent performance during congested hours.
The safest buying decision is to verify three things first: your country is supported, the exact game appears in the current finder and your connection comfortably exceeds the applicable speed guidance. If all three are true, cloud streaming can remove download and storage friction; if any one fails, Premium cannot override that limitation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stream a PS5 game I own on disc?
Sony’s documented library source is select digital PS5 games associated with your PlayStation Store library. A disc license is not listed as a cloud entitlement, so you should not buy a physical copy expecting it to appear in the streaming library; verify the title’s listing for your account.
Do I need my PS5 turned on to stream through Portal?
No. Portal cloud streaming runs from Sony’s servers rather than from your home console, so the PS5 does not need to be powered on for that session. This is separate from Remote Play, which is unavailable during a cloud-streaming session.
Can I use a child account for PS5 cloud streaming?
Portal cloud streaming requires an adult account, and child accounts cannot use that feature. Family members should therefore check the age category on the account they plan to use before troubleshooting network settings.

Streaming rights and catalog membership can change, and Sony applies different catalogs by country. Recheck the current game finder for your region; a title can remain available for purchase or download while no longer being streamable.
Does cloud streaming support broadcasting to a live audience?
No. Sony lists broadcasting, Share Play and Share Screen among the functions unavailable during a cloud session. Use a locally installed copy when those sharing features are central to your setup.
