Sony documents those checks, plus a controller reset, software updates, and escalation to PlayStation Repairs. The remaining steps below are cautious diagnostics—not twelve manufacturer-verified fixes, and none guarantees a repair.
1. Check whether the DualSense is charging
- Press the PS button, open Control Center, and select Accessories to view the controller battery.
- Connect the controller and look for an animated battery with a lightning bolt. Three bars indicate a full charge.
If the indicator does not appear, continue with the connection checks rather than assuming the battery is full. PlayStation Support’s DualSense guidance describes these indicator states.
2. Reseat the cable at both ends
Connect the controller directly to the PS5 using the included USB cable. Unplug and firmly reconnect it at the controller and console; a loose connection can prevent charging.
3. Try a different PS5 USB port
Move the cable to another USB port on the console. Sony recommends trying a different port if the controller will not charge, but does not identify one port as universally best.

4. Test a charging-and-data cable
If you have another suitable cable, try it in place of the included one. It must support both charging and data: Sony says a charge-only cable cannot be used for this troubleshooting step. Check the product labeling rather than assuming that any cable with a compatible connector will work.
5. Check the console’s power state
Test with the PS5 on. The controller can also charge while the console is in Rest Mode, but USB power must be available in that state. If it charges when the PS5 is on but not in Rest Mode, check the console’s Rest Mode USB-power setting. Sony confirms Rest Mode charging but does not specify the setting details in its charging guidance.

6. Try a compatible USB charger
If available, test with a USB-standard charger that is compatible with the controller. PlayStation Support cautions: “Please note, not all USB chargers will be capable of charging the DualSense wireless controller.” Sony does not specify a required wattage, so there is no supported wattage threshold to recommend.
7. Reset the controller
- Turn off the PS5.
- Find the small reset button on the back of the DualSense and press it with a pin or similar tool.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 using the included USB cable, then press the PS button.
Sony says resetting the controller does not change its pairing settings. Follow PlayStation Support’s controller reset guidance if you need the official instructions.

8. Update controller software if it connects
Controller updates are added with PS5 system software updates. If the controller connects, check for an available controller update under Settings > Accessories > Controller (General). An update is not a substitute for checking the cable and power connection.
9. Try the official DualSense Charging Station
If you own or can access Sony’s DualSense Charging Station, use it as an alternate charging method. The station is an optional accessory, not a repair for a controller with an internal fault. Its manual estimates approximately three hours to charge a controller when its battery has no remaining charge; that estimate applies to the station and should not be generalized to USB charging setups. Sony’s Charging Station manual provides the estimate and instructions.

10. Look for visible damage or debris
With the controller disconnected, inspect the USB-C port and cable ends for obvious damage or debris. Do not insert metal tools or liquid into the port. This is a cautious visual check, not a charging fix established by Sony’s guidance. If the port or cable appears damaged, stop using it and seek service.

Change one item at a time: test the same controller with a known-good charging-and-data cable, then try a different supported PS5 port or compatible USB power source. If charging begins after one change, that comparison may help identify which part of the setup is involved; it does not prove the controller itself is fault-free. Sony supports trying another cable, port, and USB-compliant charger.

12. Contact PlayStation Repairs if it still will not charge
If the controller still does not charge after the supported connection checks and reset, use PlayStation Repairs or the relevant PlayStation hardware support route. Sony recommends Repairs when troubleshooting does not resolve the issue. Repair eligibility, cost, and turnaround depend on circumstances and are not established by the charging guidance.
Why is my PS5 controller not charging?
The cause may be as simple as a loose connection, a cable that does not support data, an unsuccessful USB port, or a power source that cannot charge the controller. If the checks above do not restore charging, the fault may require service; the available guidance does not establish a specific diagnosis from the indicator alone.
How do I fix a DualSense that won’t charge?
Work from the simplest checks upward: confirm the battery indicator, reconnect the included cable, try another console port, and test a known-good charging-and-data cable. Then check the console’s power state, try a compatible USB charger, reset the controller, and update its software if it connects. The charging station and visual inspection are optional diagnostics; persistent failure calls for PlayStation Repairs.
