A sound that grows during a demanding game may come from the cooling fan; a sound triggered by inserting, reading, or ejecting a disc is a different symptom. Sony’s noise guidance explains fan behavior, but it does not define which optical-drive sounds are normal or diagnose a noisy disc drive. Use the checks below to rule out disc-reading issues without assuming a particular sound identifies a failed part.
Identify what triggers the noise
Sony says the cooling fan can run louder than usual during some games and applications as it works faster to cool the system. That guidance concerns the fan, not the optical drive. If the noise tracks gameplay or system load rather than disc activity, check that the console has room to ventilate. If it begins as a disc is inserted, spun, read, or ejected, continue with the disc checks below; they address reading problems, not a definitive cause of noise.
Sony recommends leaving at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the console. For vent cleaning, turn off and disconnect AC power, then use a low-powered vacuum around the vents. These are airflow measures, not disc-drive repairs. Sony’s PS5 console-noise guidance does not provide a disc-drive noise measurement, a decibel threshold, or a sound-based diagnosis.
Check the disc and supported media
- Confirm orientation. If the console is vertical on its stand, insert the disc with the label facing left.
- Inspect and clean the disc. For dirt or fingerprints, use a soft, clean cloth. For scratches or dirt, Sony specifies a lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs; wipe from the center toward the edge. Cleaning can help with a dirty disc, but it does not lubricate, quiet, or repair the drive.
- Try another supported disc. Test another game, Blu-ray Disc, or DVD. Sony says, “PS5 consoles can’t play burned discs or audio CDs,” so a failed test with either format does not establish that the drive is defective.
Reinsert the disc after each check. If you need a cleaning supply, choose a lint-free cloth intended for Blu-ray or DVD discs; it is only for cleaning the disc surface.

Try Sony’s software checks for a reading problem
If the console still has trouble reading supported discs, Sony recommends using Safe Mode to clear the cache and rebuild the database. These are software checks for a reading issue, not a proven treatment for mechanical noise alone.
- Turn off the PS5, then enter Safe Mode using Sony’s instructions for your console.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database and follow the on-screen prompts.
- After the console restarts, test the disc again.
Sony also lists Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) if the earlier steps do not resolve the reading problem. This deletes all information on the console. Back up data you want to keep and confirm you understand the consequences before proceeding. Do not reset solely because the drive makes a sound: Sony’s guidance does not establish that a reset fixes drive noise.
If the console shows error SU-101312-8
Sony identifies SU-101312-8 as an error indicating that the console cannot recognize the Blu-ray Disc drive. The related support page gives power, update, and reset steps and directs readers to PlayStation Repairs if the problem persists. The error concerns drive recognition; it does not by itself identify a particular mechanical fault. Sony’s cited error page is in the Canadian locale, so check the support instructions for your region. Sony’s SU-101312-8 support page.

If a disc is stuck
Do not force a stuck disc out. Sony provides a manual removal procedure that uses a #1 Phillips or cross-hatch screwdriver. Power off the console, remove its cables, and follow the instructions for your exact model. Sony explicitly warns not to turn on or play on the console with the cover off and says, “Do not forcibly pull the disc from the disc drive.” Avoid improvising disassembly. Follow Sony’s manual disc-removal instructions.
When to contact PlayStation Repairs
If the disc-reading checks do not resolve the problem, or a disc remains stuck, use PlayStation Repairs for the appropriate next step. The available official guidance does not establish that a particular noise texture proves a specific component has failed; describe when the sound occurs and which supported discs you tested.

Do not assume a detachable drive is a universal fix
Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 detachable drive is intended for compatible PS5 models, not as a general replacement for every disc-equipped PS5. Sony setup guidance associates it with model groups CFI-2000/7000. Check the exact console model and current compatibility information before considering the accessory; compatibility alone does not show that replacing a drive will solve a noise complaint.
Sony’s manual says to power off and unplug the console, let it cool, and avoid touching the drive and console terminals when attaching or removing the unit. Consult the CFI-ZDD1 setup instructions and the current PlayStation compatibility guidance for model-specific details.
