On PS5, the feature you want is called Display Who’s Speaking. While you are already in a PlayStation voice party, press the PS button, open the Voice Chat card in Control Center, choose More > Display Who’s Speaking, and switch on Display Names. Use Position to move the label away from your game HUD. The overlay requires system software version 26.06-14.00.00 or newer; Sony’s notes page listed 26.07-14.20.00 as the latest build on October 29, 2026.

This is a party-chat overlay, not a headset option and not a universal game-chat HUD. A standard DualSense microphone is sufficient to enable it. The steps below explain the exact menu path, what to do when the option is missing, and how to adjust a loud player after you can identify the speaker.

What does Display Who’s Speaking do on PS5?

Display Who’s Speaking places the current speaker’s PlayStation name on your screen during a PlayStation voice chat. Sony Interactive Entertainment introduced it in system software 26.06-14.00.00, whose official notes say, “You can now see who’s speaking while you’re in a voice chat.” Press coverage dates that release to September 16, 2026.

The name appears as an on-screen software indicator. It does not identify voices through a headset, change your microphone, or replace the speaker indicators built into individual games. Sony documents the control through the Control Center’s voice-chat card, so looking under Settings > Sound will not reveal the switch.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The feature works on both the regular PS5 and PS5 Pro. The same system update changed some Pro-only imaging behavior, but Sony does not describe speaker identification as a Pro-exclusive feature.

What do I need before turning on speaker names?

  • A supported system version: install 26.06-14.00.00 or later. Sony’s notes page listed 26.07-14.20.00 on October 29, 2026; that later build contains message and usability changes, while the speaker feature remains part of the earlier release.
  • An active PlayStation party: the Display Who’s Speaking command appears only on a voice-chat card. You must create or join a party first.
  • Any working microphone: the DualSense controller has a built-in microphone and a mute button. A headset can improve capture and mixing, but it is not required to turn on the overlay.

If the menu is absent, update the console before changing audio hardware. The setting is software-controlled.

How do I update the PS5 if Display Who’s Speaking is missing?

Check the installed version first, then run the system updater if necessary.

  1. Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
  2. Choose System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
  3. Select Update System Software.
  4. Install the available update and restart if the console requests it.

Any version at or after 26.06-14.00.00 includes the documented control. The calendar date of the feature’s public release was reported as September 16, 2026 by Engadget and AUTOMATON; Sony’s notes identify the version rather than that date.

How do I enable Display Who’s Speaking in a PS5 party?

Create or join a PlayStation party, then enable the names from its Voice Chat card. The full sequence is:

1. Create or join a party

  1. Press the PS button to open Control Center.
  2. Select Game Base.
  3. Open Parties and choose Start Party, or select an existing party.
  4. Choose Open Party or Closed Party, depending on who should be able to join.

There must be an active voice chat before the relevant card appears. You cannot enable the overlay from a cold home screen with no party voice chat.

2. Turn on Display Names

  1. While the party is active, press the PS button again to open Control Center.
  2. Select the Voice Chat card.
  3. Open the three-dot More menu.
  4. Choose Display Who’s Speaking.
  5. Turn on Display Names.

The name of the person currently talking should now appear on screen. Sony’s wording for the setting is “Display Names,” and it is off by default.

3. Choose a position

  1. Remain in More > Display Who’s Speaking.
  2. Select Position.
  3. Choose the location that leaves your minimap, health bar, subtitles, or other important HUD elements visible.

Sony confirms that Position controls where the indicator appears. An Engadget screenshot shows Top Left as one available value, but Sony’s notes do not publish a complete list of position choices. The feature does not provide documented controls for transparency or text size.

4. Hide the names later

Return to Control Center > Voice Chat > More > Display Who’s Speaking and switch Display Names off. This hides the overlay without leaving the party or muting anyone.

How do I adjust one player’s volume after identifying them?

Use the same Voice Chat card rather than changing the whole party mix. Select the loud player’s name, choose Volume, and lower or raise that individual level. Engadget reports that the per-player volume setting carries into later chats with that same person, so the adjustment can remain useful across future parties.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Press reports commonly describe PlayStation parties using this overlay with as many as 16 players. That is a press-reported maximum, not a party-cap figure published in Sony’s system notes. In a large party, the name overlay lets you identify a noisy microphone before changing its level instead of guessing which participant is responsible.

Why can’t I see the speaker indicator?

Most missing-indicator problems come from the wrong chat type, an outdated console, or an inactive party. Check these conditions in order.

Symptom Likely cause Fix
No Display Who’s Speaking option The console is below 26.06-14.00.00, or no party voice chat is active. Update through Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software, then create or join a party and reopen the Voice Chat card.
The menu exists but no names appear Display Names is still off. Open More > Display Who’s Speaking and turn on Display Names.
The label covers the game HUD The default position conflicts with the game’s minimap, health bar, or subtitles. Choose Position in the Display Who’s Speaking menu and move the indicator.
You are using a game’s built-in voice chat The native PS5 overlay is documented for the Control Center party voice-chat card, not in-game voice chat. Use the game’s own speaker-HUD or voice settings if that title provides them.
Your voice is not being captured The controller microphone is muted, the wrong input device is selected, or the mic level is too low. Press the DualSense mute button to unmute, then check Settings > Sound > Microphone.

Restarting a game will not make the overlay appear if the party card, software version, or Display Names switch is still incorrect. Fix those prerequisites first.

Does Display Who’s Speaking work in game chat?

No. The documented feature identifies speakers in standard PlayStation party voice chat. Engadget reports that it does not work with voice chat built into games, although individual titles may offer their own speaker names or HUD indicators.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

To switch between party and game chat, open Control Center, choose Game Base, open the party, and use the drop-down on the voice-chat card. A slider there balances voice-chat audio against other console sound; it does not activate speaker names for an in-game channel.

Does the overlay work with Discord on PS5?

Sony’s 26.06-14.00.00 notes do not state that Display Who’s Speaking applies to Discord. AUTOMATON reports that linked Discord accounts already showed speaking users’ names and icons on PS5, and describes the update as bringing a similar experience to standard PlayStation voice chat. Engadget and TugaTech also report players seeing a comparable indicator with Discord.

Treat Discord behavior as player-reported rather than a Sony-documented guarantee. If the indicator does not appear in a Discord call, use Discord’s own interface and confirm that the account-link and voice-channel setup are active.

What microphone and headset settings help once names are visible?

Speaker identification tells you who is talking; it does not improve the captured audio. Use the following controls for microphone selection, muting, and clarity.

DualSense microphone

Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone to select the Input Device and use Adjust Microphone Level. Press the controller’s mute button to mute or unmute its microphone. Sony says a 24.02-09.00.00 system update improved DualSense and DualSense Edge microphone input with an AI machine-learning model that suppresses background noise from button presses and game audio.

Prevent an accidental hot mic

From the Control Center Mic card, open Microphone Status When Starting Voice Chat or Broadcast and choose Switch to Mute. Sony says this setting turns the microphone off automatically when a voice chat or broadcast starts, so you can unmute deliberately.

Headphone output and party clarity

For headphones, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device, then set Output to Headphones as needed. Headphones-only Audio Focus is under Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus; Sony added it in version 25.03-11.20.00 and says it can make party voices clearer.

PULSE headset options

Neither headset below is necessary for Display Who’s Speaking. They are alternatives for people who want different microphone pickup, chat mixing, or battery life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Headset Voice hardware Wireless runtime stated by Sony Other documented details

PULSE Elite wireless headset Retractable boom with microphone noise-rejection technology; Sony says its AI system identifies, isolates, and removes unwanted noise while capturing your voice Up to 30 hours; up to 2 hours of use from a 10-minute charge PlayStation Link wireless connection

For compatible PULSE devices, open Control Center > Sound > EQ Presets to select a PULSE EQ preset. These sound controls affect how chat is heard or captured; they do not change which names the overlay displays.

What are the limits of PS5 speaker identification?

  • Party scope: the native indicator is for standard PlayStation voice chat accessed through the Control Center Voice Chat card.
  • Position controls: Position is available, but Sony does not list every location value in the release notes.
  • No transparency or size settings: Engadget reports no controls for making the indicator translucent or changing its text size.
  • Game-specific chat: the overlay does not replace a title’s own in-game speaker HUD.
  • Language labels: menu wording follows the console’s system language. In Sony’s Japanese notes, the path is Control Center voice-chat card, その他 (More), 発言者の名前を表示 (Display Who’s Speaking), then 名前を表示 (Display Names); 位置 sets the position.
  • Early availability: Engadget reports that some players saw the setting as early as November 2025, while others never saw it or later lost it. Sony did not explain how that early access was controlled; the September 2026 notes mark the feature’s official public-release documentation.

How does this compare with other ways to see who is talking?

The right option depends on which voice channel you use. The native PlayStation overlay is the most direct choice for a PS5 party, while Discord and individual games have separate interfaces.

Option Where it works What appears Important qualification
Display Who’s Speaking Standard PlayStation party voice chat Current speaker’s PlayStation name Position can be changed; Sony does not document transparency or text-size controls.
Discord voice chat on PS5 Discord calls linked to the console Names and icons have been reported Comparable behavior is reported by AUTOMATON, Engadget, and TugaTech, but Sony’s system notes do not promise this overlay for Discord.
In-game voice-chat HUD A game’s own voice channel Whatever speaker display that title implements Controls and availability vary by game; the PS5 party overlay does not add it.

Xbox party overlays provide a historical comparison: Engadget reported that an Xbox overlay announced in May 2017 could adjust position and transparency. Those controls are not documented for Sony’s PS5 feature.

What should you do in a 16-player party?

Leave Display Names enabled, move the indicator to an unused corner, and adjust individual volume from the Voice Chat card as soon as a microphone becomes disruptive. The reported maximum of up to 16 participants makes visual identification more practical than asking everyone to announce themselves, but the cap is press-reported rather than confirmed in Sony’s notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set the overlay position before the match begins so it does not hide critical HUD information.
  2. Watch for the name that remains highlighted while the unwanted noise occurs.
  3. Select that participant on the Voice Chat card and use Volume for a per-player adjustment.
  4. Keep the DualSense or headset microphone unmuted only when speaking, especially in an open party.

What changed in the September 2026 update?

Version 26.06-14.00.00 is the release that Sony credits with adding the speaker indicator. Its notes also include unrelated system changes, including Enhance PSSR Image Quality enabled by default on PS5 Pro; that Pro imaging setting should not be confused with the voice-chat feature. Sony’s later 26.07-14.20.00 notes were listed as the newest build on October 29, 2026, but the later notes are described as message and usability updates rather than a replacement for Display Who’s Speaking.

The practical result is simple: update the console, join a PlayStation party, open the Voice Chat card, and turn on Display Names. Once enabled, the overlay supplies the missing visual cue in crowded party chat without requiring a new microphone or headset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will turning off Display Names mute the party or remove me from voice chat?

No. Display Names controls only the on-screen speaker label. Your party connection and microphone state remain governed by the normal Voice Chat and Mic controls.

Why did I see the feature before the September 2026 release?

Engadget reported limited early access as far back as November 2025, with inconsistent availability between players. Sony did not explain that rollout, so an earlier appearance was not evidence that every PS5 had the feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the menu labels different on a Japanese PS5?

Yes. Sony’s Japanese notes use その他 for More, 発言者の名前を表示 for Display Who’s Speaking, 名前を表示 for Display Names, and 位置 for Position. The function is the same even though the labels follow the console language.

Can I make the speaker label transparent or larger?

No such controls are documented for the PS5 overlay. The available customization documented by Sony is the on-screen Position setting; press coverage reports no transparency or text-size adjustment.
