Short answer: An Xbox Series X can currently run an experimental KytyPS5 port through Xbox Developer Mode, but the evidence is limited to proof-of-concept booting. A reported Astro Bot test reached roughly 10 frames per second, which is far from playable console performance. If you want dependable access to PS5 games, use a PlayStation 5, where those games run natively on the hardware they were designed for.
What the Xbox experiment actually proves
Reports of PS5 emulation on Xbox Series X concern an unofficial port of KytyPS5, a work-in-progress PlayStation 5 emulator, packaged as a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) application. It is run through the console’s Developer Mode rather than through the normal retail game environment.

That distinction matters. A program launching, displaying graphics or reaching gameplay code is not the same as a compatible console. The available report demonstrates experimental booting and very limited performance; it does not establish a broad PS5 game catalog, stable playability, complete controller support or feature parity.
Microsoft’s documentation confirms that Xbox Series X|S can run UWP applications and that a retail console can be converted into a development kit with the Dev Mode Activation App. Those documents describe the development platform, not official support for PlayStation software. No official Microsoft or Sony source identifies Xbox Series X as PS5-compatible.

Why a powerful Xbox is not automatically a PS5
Xbox Series X has substantial modern-console hardware, including hardware-accelerated ray tracing, support for high-refresh displays and proprietary storage expansion. Those capabilities benefit native Xbox games. They do not provide the operating-system, graphics-driver, firmware and game-compatibility layers required to run PS5 software directly.
Emulation adds another layer: the emulator must translate instructions and reproduce system behavior intended for a different CPU, graphics architecture, operating system and timing model. Even when two consoles use related AMD technology, similar headline hardware does not make their software interchangeable. An emulator can also lack implementations for a game’s graphics features, storage behavior, audio paths, networking or controller APIs.
What the reported 10 FPS result means
The cited specialist report describes Astro Bot running at approximately 10 FPS on Xbox Series X through the experimental port and characterizes the performance as poor. Treat that number as a report from one build and one test, not as a universal benchmark for every game or a permanent limit. Emulator development can change results quickly, and no official Microsoft or Sony benchmark confirms the figure.

For a player, however, the practical implication is clear: roughly 10 FPS is not evidence that an Xbox has become a usable PS5 replacement. A game may technically reach a menu or render a scene while still suffering from severe stutter, missing effects, broken audio, crashes, incorrect input or progression-blocking bugs. Until repeatable tests show stable frame rates and broad title coverage, the project belongs in the experimental category.
How to try the Xbox proof of concept
Developer Mode is intended for testing software, not for turning the retail Xbox experience into a second console library. The broad process is:
- Install Microsoft’s Dev Mode Activation App. Use the official app and follow Microsoft’s enrollment and activation instructions. Activation changes the console into a development environment; it does not install PS5 compatibility.
- Switch to Developer Mode. Retail Mode and Developer Mode are separate environments. When the console is in Developer Mode, ordinary retail-game use is unavailable until you switch back.
- Deploy the UWP build. Install the KytyPS5 port only from a legitimate, verifiable project source. The Xbox documentation establishes UWP deployment, but it does not certify this emulator or its game compatibility.
- Use lawfully obtained software and firmware. The legal position can vary by jurisdiction and by how firmware, keys and game data are obtained. Do not assume that a technical demonstration answers the copyright or licensing question.
- Measure expectations, not just launch success. Record whether a title boots, reaches gameplay, accepts input, renders correctly, maintains a stable frame rate and saves progress. A successful launch alone is not a compatibility result.
- Return to Retail Mode for normal Xbox use. Microsoft’s UWP FAQ explains that users can switch back to Retail Mode to play normal games. Switching modes does not preserve PS5 functionality in the retail dashboard.
Because emulator builds and compatibility can change, follow the current instructions from the project itself and Microsoft rather than relying on an old video or a copied configuration. No broad, verified PS5-on-Xbox game list is established in the available evidence.

What native PS5 play provides
Hardware designed for PS5 software
Sony’s PS5 specification lists an x86-64 AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU, custom AMD graphics technology, a high-speed SSD and hardware acceleration for ray tracing. Games compiled and optimized for that platform can target those components directly instead of translating another console’s instructions at run time.

Consistent platform behavior
Native support means the console’s operating system, graphics stack, suspend and resume behavior, storage APIs and update systems are the ones the game developer targeted. That does not make every release bug-free, but it removes the fundamental compatibility uncertainty of an experimental emulator.
DualSense and audiovisual features
Sony identifies DualSense wireless-controller haptics and adaptive triggers, ultra-fast loading, enhanced visuals and 3D Audio as PS5-game benefits. A UWP emulator may expose ordinary input, but there is no evidence of complete, title-by-title parity with these PS5-specific features.

PS5 backward compatibility is mostly PS4
Buying a PS5 also provides an established way to continue a large PS4 library. Sony stated that more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus games available on PS4 would be playable on PS5 at launch, and selected titles can receive Game Boost improvements. That claim concerns PS4 software; it should not be read as a promise that every older game or accessory behaves identically.
Backward compatibility is different from emulating PS5 games on Xbox. In the PS5 case, Sony controls the platform integration and publishes compatibility information. In the Xbox case, the experimental emulator must recreate a separate console environment without an official compatibility program.
Storage considerations for a PS5 library
The PS5 supports expansion with a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD. Check Sony’s current fit, interface and speed requirements for the specific drive before buying, because an M.2 label alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
PS5 games stored on USB extended storage cannot be played directly. Sony requires those games to be copied back to the console’s internal storage before they can run. USB storage remains useful for keeping a library or archiving installs, but it is not a substitute for the console’s internal or approved M.2 storage when launching PS5 software.
Which console should you choose?
Choose Xbox Series X when
- Your priority is the native Xbox catalog, Xbox backward compatibility and Xbox services.
- You enjoy software experimentation and accept that Developer Mode requires a separate environment from Retail Mode.
- You understand that the PS5 emulator is an unofficial project with no dependable game-count guarantee.
Choose a PlayStation 5 when
- You specifically want to play PS5 releases with predictable compatibility and console performance.
- You value DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers, fast loading, enhanced visuals and 3D Audio as designed features.
- You want supported access to most of a large PS4 library as well as native PS5 games.
- You prefer a documented storage-expansion path using a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD.
Do not choose based on the emulator alone
An Xbox purchase made primarily for PS5 emulation is a bet on an evolving development project. The reported 10 FPS Astro Bot result shows how large the gap can be between “it runs” and “it replaces a PS5.” If your requirement is a particular PS5 game, buy the platform on which that game is officially released unless a current, reproducible compatibility test proves otherwise.
Common misconceptions and failure points
“Series X hardware is fast enough, so every PS5 game should work.”
Raw performance is only one part of emulation. Accurate translation, system calls, graphics features, firmware behavior and game-specific fixes are all required. A fast console can still have incomplete or incompatible emulation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“A video showing a title booting proves compatibility.”
Booting may end at a logo, menu or short demonstration. Look for sustained gameplay, stable frame pacing, correct rendering, working audio, controller response, saves and a repeatable build before calling a title playable.
“Developer Mode turns the Xbox retail dashboard into a PS5 launcher.”
Developer Mode is a separate development environment. Microsoft documents switching back to Retail Mode for normal games; it does not document PS5 compatibility or a supported PlayStation storefront on Xbox.
“Every PS4 game is guaranteed on PS5.”
Sony’s statement covers more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games available at launch, not literally every title, accessory or regional variation. Check a game’s current support information when a specific exception matters.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Is the game officially available for PS5? If yes, native PS5 play is the reliable route.
- Are you evaluating an emulator as a hobby project rather than as your main game system? If no, do not base the purchase on the Xbox experiment.
- Do you need DualSense features, fast loading or 3D Audio? These are native PS5 design targets, not proven emulator guarantees.
- Will you use Developer Mode? Plan for mode switching and understand that it is separate from ordinary retail play.
- Do you need more PS5 storage? Verify Sony’s current M.2 requirements, and remember that PS5 games on USB extended storage must be copied back before play.
- Are you relying on a frame-rate claim? Confirm the emulator build, game version, test conditions and whether the result is repeatable; the approximately 10 FPS report is not an official benchmark.
