Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: A PS5 exploit is tied to particular system-software versions, not to every console. Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026 that the Relapse jailbreak covered firmware 7.00 through 13.60, but that range is a dated community report rather than a guarantee that every payload or homebrew application works. Sony’s latest official software is the safer choice for security fixes, online services, current games and normal support.
Decide only after recording your exact firmware version. If you value security, PSN access, new releases and warranty or repair eligibility, use Sony’s official update process. If you are researching preservation of an older firmware, understand that postponing updates can block newer games and services, and never use a random PUP, modified package or “one-click jailbreak” download.

What a PS5 exploit actually depends on
A jailbreak is not a universal switch. It normally requires a chain of vulnerabilities: an entry point that accepts crafted data, a bug that provides deeper privileges, payloads built for that environment, and firmware-specific offsets and mitigations. Changing any link can break the chain. A system update may close the original bug, change memory layouts, add checks or strengthen a mitigation without removing every vulnerability.
The Hardwear.io 2026 security presentation describes current PS5 security work as attack-surface reduction, exploit mitigations and stronger hardware-security barriers. It also notes that a simple userland-plus-kernel chain is not sufficient in every case. A claim that a technique works on one version therefore cannot be extended safely to a different version.

What the reported firmware ranges mean
As of September 30, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that the Relapse jailbreak supported PS5 firmware 7.00–13.60. That statement describes the range reported at that date; it does not establish that every Relapse payload, homebrew program or game modification works throughout the range. Compatibility can vary by model, trigger, payload build and application.
| Firmware situation | Exploit evidence | Games, online features and security | Support and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7.00–13.60 | Relapse support was reported by Tom’s Hardware on September 30, 2026. Treat this as time-sensitive community reporting. | Older versions may miss later security fixes, system features, patches and game requirements. Online compatibility can change when services require newer software. | Keeping an old version preserves a possible target, but Sony does not promise a way to return to it after updating. Modification can affect service and warranty eligibility. |
| 14.00 and later | No specific Relapse support is established by the cited report. Compatibility must be checked against current technical evidence. | Tom’s Hardware noted that some newer games were already demanding firmware 14.00, making an older exploitable version less useful for current releases. | An official update path is supported; a downgrade to an older vulnerable state is not promised by Sony. |
| System software 26.06-14.10.00 | PlayStation LifeStyle reported a rollout on October 1, 2026 and said the revision appeared to address recent jailbreak activity. Sony’s primary changelog confirming an exploit-specific fix was not included, so the interpretation remains provisional. | This is a newer official release than the reported 7.00–13.60 range and is intended to carry current fixes and compatibility changes. | Installing through Sony’s process preserves the normal supported path. It does not prove that every exploit is fixed or that every modified console will recover. |
| Latest official release offered to your console | Exploit status must be checked for that exact version; do not infer it from an older report. | Provides Sony’s current security fixes and the best chance of running newly released games and online services. | Official updating is the supported, reversible-in-the-normal-use sense option; Sony does not offer a general downgrade procedure. |
Should you update or stay on an older firmware?
There is no universal answer because the choice is between a possible research target and the benefits of a supported, current console. Use the priority that matters most to you rather than treating an exploit range as a recommendation.
Update promptly when security and normal use come first
- You use PSN or other online features and need the version those services currently accept.
- You buy new releases whose minimum firmware may be higher than your installed version.
- You want Sony’s security fixes, bug fixes and compatibility work.
- You depend on ordinary warranty or repair-service handling.
Sony Interactive Entertainment states: “SIE strongly recommends always installing the latest update as soon as possible after the update is released.” Sony’s guidance also says that failing to update can leave a console exposed to security risks.
Consider preservation only with a clear trade-off
An owner who is deliberately researching exploit preservation may choose not to update immediately, but that is a risk-management decision, not a supported Sony configuration. Delays can remove access to newer games, patches or online features. Community compatibility can change quickly, and a version reported as exploitable may still lack a stable entry point, usable payload or software you actually need.
Before deciding, write down the complete version string in Settings > System > System Software > Console Information (the exact information screen can vary with Sony’s interface revisions). Do not rely on a post that says only “PS5 13.xx”; the minor version and model context can matter.
What happens when Sony patches an exploit?
A patch can close the initial entry point, fix the privilege-escalation bug, alter offsets, add validation or strengthen a mitigation. The result may be that an old proof of concept no longer launches, a payload crashes, or only a portion of the chain remains usable. A patch does not necessarily eliminate every future vulnerability, but it invalidates assumptions tied to the changed component.
The October 1, 2026 rollout of system software 26.06-14.10.00 was described by PlayStation LifeStyle as appearing to address recent jailbreak activity. Because the cited material did not include a Sony primary changelog confirming an exploit-specific fix, describe that conclusion as provisional rather than definitive. Do not assume the update patches every exploit, and do not assume an older exploit still works after installing it.

Can you go back to an older vulnerable PS5 firmware?
Sony supports updating forward through its official files; it does not promise a consumer downgrade or a way to restore an older vulnerable state. Reinstalling the current system software is not a downgrade mechanism. If a console has been modified, its behavior can differ from an unmodified system, and Sony warns that altered consoles may not operate correctly or may lose warranty and repair-service eligibility.
Do not treat a USB stick, a recovery menu or a file found on a forum as evidence that downgrading is safe. A package that is renamed, incomplete or modified can leave the console unable to boot and can expose you to malware.
How to install an official PS5 update
Use only Sony’s own update workflow. Menu names can change slightly between releases, but the supported path is:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Choose System Software Update and Settings.
- Enable automatic updates, or select Update System Software when an update is offered.
- Keep the console powered and connected until the process reports completion.
Sony specifically warns: “Don’t download or install the update using data other than the official update file provided online by Sony Interactive Entertainment.” A browser result, social-media attachment or “jailbreak installer” is not an official source.

USB reinstallation is intended for recovery or a clean installation of Sony’s software, not for installing an exploit. Use a USB drive and the exact file and folder names Sony specifies:
- Obtain the official PS5 system-software file from Sony.
- Create a folder on the USB drive named
UPDATE. - Save the downloaded file in that folder with the filename
PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Turn the PS5 fully off.
- Start Safe Mode by holding the power button until you hear the second beep.
- Connect the prepared USB drive and select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Follow the on-screen confirmation and allow the installation to finish without removing power or the USB drive.
The reinstall option can remove local console data, so back up anything you need before confirming and read every warning on screen. If the console rejects the file, check the spelling and capitalization of UPDATE and PS5UPDATE.PUP, redownload from Sony, and repeat the Safe Mode process. Never substitute a modified PUP.
Safety, warranty and repair risks
- Unofficial files: Sony warns against update data obtained from another source or installed by another method. Such files can be corrupt, malicious or incompatible.
- Modified hardware or software: Sony says an altered console may fail to operate properly and may affect warranty and repair-service eligibility.
- Online exposure: Remaining on an old version can leave known security issues unpatched and may eventually prevent access to services that require current software.
- Data loss: Recovery and reinstall operations can affect local data. Maintain backups before troubleshooting.
- False compatibility claims: A video showing one firmware, model and payload does not prove that your console will behave the same way.
Do not install a random PUP, pay for a “one-click jailbreak,” or follow instructions that ask you to disable safeguards or run unknown executables. This article does not provide bypass instructions; the safe choice is to use Sony’s supported software and recovery paths.
If an update fails
- Record the error code and the firmware version shown before the failure.
- Restart the console and retry the official network update from Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- If the normal update cannot complete, prepare Sony’s official
PS5UPDATE.PUPin theUPDATEfolder on a USB drive. - Enter Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep and choose the documented reinstall option.
- If the console still fails, stop experimenting with third-party files and contact PlayStation Support with the error code and steps already attempted.
How to evaluate exploit claims responsibly
Give the most weight to evidence that identifies an exact firmware, console model, trigger, payload version and reproducible result. A dated technology-news report is useful for establishing what was publicly claimed at that time, but it is not a standing compatibility guarantee. Sony’s own support documentation is authoritative for updating, reinstalling and service consequences, while community reports are inherently more changeable.

Owner checklist before changing anything
- Record the exact system-software version and console model.
- Decide whether security fixes, online play, new games and service eligibility outweigh preserving a possible research target.
- If updating, use only the official Settings path or Sony’s official USB reinstall procedure.
- If preserving an older version for research, accept that compatibility, game access and online features may deteriorate while you wait.
- Keep backups and avoid every unofficial PUP, modified update package and one-click service.
- For a failed update, use Safe Mode and Sony’s documented recovery process before contacting support.
Sony’s vulnerability-reporting route
Sony Interactive Entertainment operates coordinated vulnerability reporting and a PlayStation Bug Bounty Program. That gives security researchers a formal route to report flaws without distributing unauthorized update files or exploit services. Owners should use official support and security channels rather than downloading unverified tools.
