No—you cannot play PS5 games directly from an external hard drive or external USB SSD. The PS5 can move PS5 game installations to USB extended storage to free space, but you must copy each game back to the console’s internal SSD or a compatible, internally installed M.2 NVMe SSD before launching it. The key exception is PS4 software: Sony says PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
That makes an external hard drive for PS5 game storage an archive and PS4-game solution—not an external PS5-playback upgrade. If you want additional space from which PS5 games can launch, you need a compatible internal M.2 SSD with suitable cooling.

An external SSD may transfer the game faster than a hard disk in some situations, but its USB connection does not turn it into the internal, directly playable expansion that PS5 games require. Can PS4 games play directly from a USB drive on PS5?
Yes. PS4 games can be installed on USB extended storage and played directly from it. This is the important exception to the PS5-game rule, and it can make an external drive useful even if your main library is PS5 software.
PS4 games can remain on the external drive while you launch them, provided the drive is connected and recognized. PS5 games on that same drive must be copied back before play. You can therefore use one USB drive for two different jobs: direct playback of PS4 titles and archiving of PS5 installations.
What is the difference between USB extended storage and an internal M.2 SSD?
USB extended storage is an external archive/playback location for PS4 games. An internal M.2 NVMe SSD is a console-installed expansion that can hold and launch compatible PS5 games.

For internal expansion, Sony specifies a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe drive, physical dimensions that fit the bay, and effective heat dissipation. M.2 SATA drives are unsupported. The 5,500 MB/s figure is a recommendation for sequential read speed, not a guarantee that every qualifying drive will deliver identical in-game results. How do I set up a new external drive for PS5?
Use these steps for a drive that has not already been formatted as PS5 USB extended storage. Formatting erases the drive, so copy any files you need elsewhere first.
- Check the drive. It must be SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later, have between 250 GB and 8 TB of capacity, and connect to a SuperSpeed-capable PS5 port. Sony does not guarantee that every device meeting the headline specifications will work.
- Connect it directly to the console. Do not route it through a USB hub. Sony permits only one USB extended-storage drive in use at a time.
- Open the format menu. On the PS5, go to Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage, then choose Format as USB Extended Storage.
- Confirm the warning. The format removes all existing data from the drive. Wait for the console to finish before disconnecting it.
An external drive that was already formatted as PS4 or PS5 USB extended storage does not need to be reformatted just because you connect it to another PS5. Safely stop using it through the console’s storage controls before unplugging it.

How do I move a PS5 game to external storage?
Moving a game archives its installed files; it does not create a playable USB installation. The process is:
- Open Game Library and highlight the PS5 game.
- Press the controller’s Options button.
- Choose Move Games and Apps, select Move, and confirm the destination.
Moving can be useful when you want to keep a game installed without using internal playable space. Sony notes that retaining the installation externally can avoid downloading or reinstalling the game from a disc later. Updates, add-ons, and the game’s current location can affect how much data the console needs to move.

How do I play a PS5 game that is archived on USB?
Copy it back to console storage first. A USB drive cannot become a direct PS5 launch location through a menu setting or by using a faster external SSD.
- Connect the formatted USB extended-storage drive.
- Open Game Library and select the Installed tab.
- Highlight the archived PS5 game and press Options.
- Select Copy (or the copy-to-console option shown by the system) and wait for the transfer to finish.
- Launch the game after it appears on the console storage or a compatible internal M.2 SSD.
If the game is on disc, the disc may still be required to verify ownership even after the files are copied. Digital games continue to use the account that owns the license. The copy operation restores the game files; it does not change where PS5 saved data is stored.

Why won’t my PS5 recognize the external drive?
Start with the requirements and connection path rather than assuming the drive is defective. A device can meet the nominal capacity and speed numbers and still lack guaranteed compatibility.
- Verify capacity: the supported range is 250 GB through 8 TB.
- Verify USB speed: the drive and cable must support SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later.
- Use a SuperSpeed port: connect directly to the console, not through a hub or adapter chain.
- Check the console model’s ports: Sony’s port guide lists a Hi-Speed front Type-A port on the CFI-1000 group and a Hi-Speed front Type-C port on the CFI-2000/7000 group, alongside SuperSpeed alternatives. A front port that is only Hi-Speed is not the same as a SuperSpeed storage port.
- Consider compatibility limits: Sony does not guarantee every otherwise qualifying drive. If the console offers to format a recognized drive, remember that formatting deletes its contents.
Use Sony’s PS5 USB-port guidance to identify the appropriate connector for your model. Avoid claiming a particular cable, enclosure, or power workaround is guaranteed unless Sony documents it for that device.

Does moving a PS5 game move its saved progress?
No. Game installation data and saved data are separate. Moving the game to USB preserves the install files, but it is not a backup of your PS5 save files.
Sony’s storage-location table allows PS5 game data on USB extended storage but does not list PS5 saved data as something you can store there for play. Keep saves in the supported console or cloud-save location associated with your account and subscription, and use the PS5’s data-management tools when you need to back them up or transfer them.

Choose based on whether you need an archive or immediately playable PS5 capacity.
- Choose external USB storage if you want inexpensive bulk space for PS4 games, or you are comfortable copying PS5 games back before each play session. It is also practical for keeping large PS5 installs available without redownloading them.
- Choose an internal M.2 NVMe SSD if your priority is launching PS5 games without transfers. Confirm PCIe Gen4 x4 support, 250 GB–8 TB capacity, physical fit, and a suitable heatsink or other cooling solution. Follow Sony’s installation procedure and use a #1 Phillips screwdriver.
- Use both if you have a large mixed library: keep frequently played PS5 games on console/M.2 storage, archive less-used PS5 games on USB, and leave PS4 titles on USB for direct play.
Do not confuse an external USB SSD with an M.2 expansion SSD. The word “SSD” describes the storage medium; it does not describe the connection or whether the drive is installed inside the PS5.

What should you know before disconnecting the drive?
Never unplug USB extended storage while the PS5 is reading or moving data. Stop it through the console’s storage controls first, then disconnect it. If the drive is absent when you select a PS4 game installed on it, the game will not launch until the drive is reconnected.
Keeping the drive connected is not required for an archived PS5 game once you have copied that game back to console or M.2 storage. Conversely, deleting the USB copy after copying it back is safe only if you no longer need the archive and have enough internal space for the playable installation.
Bottom line: can an external hard drive play PS5 games?
An external hard drive or USB SSD can store PS5 games, but it cannot play them directly. Use USB extended storage for PS4 games and PS5 archives; use the built-in SSD or a compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD for PS5 games you want to launch immediately.
