Yes, you can install PS5 game data on a compatible external SSD, but you cannot launch PS5 games directly from that USB drive. The drive works as an archive and transfer location: move games to it to free the console’s internal space, then copy a title back before playing. PS4 games are different and can run directly from USB extended storage. If you want expanded storage from which PS5 games download, install, and launch without a copy-back step, use a compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD.
Sony’s USB rules are straightforward: the drive must use SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or faster, hold at least 250 GB, and not exceed 8 TB. The most practical setup for a large library is often both types of expansion: USB SSD storage for rotating PS5 titles and an internal M.2 SSD for games you want ready to play.

Can you install PS5 games to an external SSD?
You can move a PS5 game from console storage to an external SSD after formatting that drive as USB extended storage. “Install” in this context means storing the game files; it does not mean the game can execute from the USB device. Sony’s support guide states that PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage, so the title must be copied to the PS5’s internal storage or a compatible internal M.2 SSD before launch.
This distinction matters when choosing capacity. A USB SSD lets you keep a library available without downloading every game again, but starting a PS5 game involves a transfer. An internal M.2 drive behaves like additional console storage: PS5 games can remain installed there and launch from it.

What can an external SSD do on PS5?
A correctly prepared USB SSD has three useful jobs: it can hold PS5 games that are not currently being played, provide a place to move games when internal space is low, and run PS4 games directly. It is therefore an archive and shuttle, not a second PS5-game execution drive.
Archive PS5 games instead of redownloading them
Move completed or less frequently played PS5 titles to the USB drive. Their updates and game data remain on that drive until you copy them back. This is usually faster and uses less bandwidth than deleting a large game and downloading it again later, although the copy-back time depends on the amount of data and the drives involved.
Play PS4 games directly from USB
Sony allows PS4 games to launch directly from compatible USB extended storage. You can leave a PS4 library on the external SSD and use it without first moving each title to console or M.2 storage. Sony notes that a device with a faster specification may produce shorter load times for PS4 games stored externally, but its current support material does not publish a universal SSD-versus-HDD loading figure.
What it cannot do
- It cannot launch a PS5 game while that game remains on USB extended storage.
- It cannot be connected through a USB hub for PS5 extended-storage use.
- It cannot be used as two simultaneous extended-storage drives; Sony says two or more USB extended-storage drives cannot be used at the same time.
How do you set up an external SSD as PS5 extended storage?
Use a drive that meets Sony’s capacity and speed requirements, connect it directly to the console, and format it when prompted. Formatting erases all existing data on the drive, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- Check the drive. Confirm that it is rated for SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster and has between 250 GB and 8 TB of usable capacity. Compatibility is not guaranteed for every device, even when its headline specification appears to fit.
- Connect it directly. Plug the SSD into a PS5 USB port without a hub, dock, or extension arrangement that places a hub between the drive and console.
- Format it. Open the PS5 storage settings, choose the connected USB drive, and select the option to format it as USB extended storage. Read the warning: the process deletes the drive’s existing contents.
- Wait for completion. Do not disconnect the cable while formatting. When the console reports that the drive is ready, it appears as USB extended storage in the storage screen.
- Choose an installation location for PS4 games if needed. In Storage settings, set USB extended storage as the installation location for PS4 games and apps. This does not make PS5 games playable from the USB drive.
A drive formatted for one purpose may not retain ordinary computer files in a usable way. Treat the formatting step as a dedicated-console-storage setup, not as a way to keep a mixed archive of documents and games on the same volume.
How do you move a PS5 game to the external SSD and back?
Moving is done from the game library rather than by dragging folders with a computer. Keep the drive connected while the transfer runs, and do not power off or unplug it until the PS5 confirms completion.

- Open Game Library on the PS5.
- Highlight the game or app you want to relocate.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Choose Move Games and Apps.
- Select the PS5 game, choose the external USB storage as the destination, and confirm the move.
When you want to play that PS5 title, repeat the process and select console storage or the internal M.2 SSD as the destination. The title remains listed in your library while it is archived, but the playable copy must be on one of those internal locations.
You can select multiple games in the move screen when you are clearing space, which is useful for an entire group of finished campaigns. Leave enough free space on the destination for the complete selected set; a partial transfer does not create a playable PS5 installation.
What are the PS5 external-storage limits?
Sony’s current USB extended-storage guidance sets a minimum capacity of 250 GB and a maximum of 8 TB. The connection must meet the SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps standard or later. These are format and interface requirements, not a promise that every drive in that range will work.
| Requirement | What Sony specifies | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 250 GB minimum; 8 TB maximum | A smaller flash drive is not eligible as PS5 extended storage, and capacities above 8 TB are outside the stated limit. |
| Interface | SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later | Check the drive and cable ratings; a high-speed SSD connected through a slower link cannot use the faster specification. |
| Connection | Direct connection to the PS5; no USB hub | Connect the drive to the console itself rather than through a hub or similar intermediary. |
| Simultaneous drives | Two or more USB extended-storage drives cannot be used at the same time | Plan to disconnect one drive before attaching another. |
Capacity labels describe decimal storage, and part of a drive is consumed by formatting, so the free figure shown by the PS5 will be lower than the number printed on the enclosure. The 250 GB and 8 TB limits are Sony’s stated boundaries; they are not estimates based on a particular manufacturer’s model.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can PS4 games run from an external SSD?
Yes. Once the SSD is formatted as USB extended storage, PS4 games can stay there and launch directly. That makes an external SSD especially useful for a mixed PS5-and-PS4 library: archive PS5 games to reclaim internal space while leaving PS4 games installed on the USB drive for immediate access.
When a game has both PS4 and PS5 versions, check which version is installed before moving it. The PS4 version follows the direct-play USB rule; the PS5 version must be on console or M.2 storage to launch. Keeping both versions can consume substantially more space, so remove the edition you do not need or archive it deliberately.

Is an internal M.2 SSD better for PS5 games?
For direct PS5 play, yes. Sony says a correctly installed M.2 SSD can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games. It removes the copy-back step required by USB extended storage, so games installed there appear as ready-to-play titles.
The trade-off is installation complexity and stricter compatibility. You must open the PS5’s expansion bay, fit the drive correctly, and provide suitable heat dissipation. The SSD must meet the requirements for your exact PS5 model, including interface, physical dimensions, and clearance for a heatsink.
Core M.2 requirements
- Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe support.
- Physical fit: The module’s supported length, width, and thickness must match the console’s expansion-bay limits.
- Heat dissipation: Use an appropriate heatsink or a model with an integrated heatsink that remains within Sony’s clearance requirements.
- Capacity: Sony’s cited safety guide lists 250 GB to 4 TB for the documented console generation. Check the current PlayStation support page and your exact model before buying because requirements can vary by console documentation.
What installation involves
- Back up important saves and shut the console down completely; do not work on an operating console.
- Remove the expansion-bay cover according to Sony’s model-specific instructions.
- Insert the compatible M.2 module at the correct angle, secure it with the supplied spacer and screw position, and verify that any heatsink does not exceed the permitted clearance.
- Replace the cover, reconnect the console, and start it.
- When the PS5 requests formatting, allow it to format the M.2 SSD. This erases data already on that module.
- Use Storage settings to confirm the new location and, if desired, select it as the installation location for PS5 games and apps.
Do not choose an M.2 drive solely because it advertises a large capacity. A drive that lacks the required PCIe generation, does not fit the bay, or has an oversized heatsink is not a compliant expansion choice even if it is faster on paper.
What is the difference between an external SSD and an internal M.2 SSD?
The key difference is where the PS5 is allowed to execute game code. USB extended storage is removable archive space; the internal M.2 slot is an approved expansion of the console’s playable storage.
| Decision point | External USB SSD | Internal M.2 NVMe SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Launch PS5 games directly? | No. Copy the game to console or M.2 storage first. | Yes, when the drive meets Sony’s requirements and is installed correctly. |
| Launch PS4 games directly? | Yes, from compatible USB extended storage. | Yes. |
| Primary benefit | Portable archive and quick rotation of a large library. | More always-installed, ready-to-play PS5 capacity. |
| Setup | Connect, format as USB extended storage, and move games. | Open the expansion bay, install a compatible module with heat dissipation, then format it. |
| Portability | Easy to disconnect and move between compatible consoles after following each console’s formatting prompts. | Installed inside one console and not intended as a portable game library. |
| Performance evidence | Sony says faster specifications may shorten PS4 load times; no universal SSD-versus-HDD figure is published. | Uses the console’s approved internal expansion path; actual game behavior depends on the compliant drive and title. |
Which storage setup fits your library?
Choose an external SSD when you want an archive
USB storage is the simpler choice when internal space is the immediate problem, you rotate through many games, or you want a portable library of PS4 titles. It is also useful when you prefer not to open the console. Budget for the extra step of moving every PS5 title back before play.
Choose an internal M.2 SSD when you want PS5 games ready immediately
M.2 storage is the better fit for a player who keeps several large PS5 games installed at once, changes games frequently, or wants the console to treat the expansion as playable capacity. Verify every compatibility dimension and the heatsink clearance before purchase.

Use both when you have a large mixed library
A two-tier arrangement is practical: keep frequently played PS5 games on the internal M.2 drive, archive less-used PS5 games on USB, and leave PS4 games on USB for direct play. This avoids paying the installation effort for every terabyte while preserving a broad library.
How should you choose a PS5-compatible external SSD?
Start with compatibility rather than brand or advertised peak speed. Sony does not guarantee every device, so treat the following as a checklist before buying:
- USB rating: The drive and its cable should support SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later.
- Capacity: Stay within 250 GB to 8 TB for USB extended storage. Select enough space for the number of PS5 games you expect to rotate, remembering that PS5 games still need internal space when played.
- Direct connection: The package should let you connect directly to the console without requiring a hub.
- Portability: A compact, bus-powered SSD is convenient for moving an archive, but protect the cable and connector from being pulled while the drive is active.
- Thermal design: Sustained transfers can generate heat. Use the enclosure’s specified operating conditions and avoid covering its vents.
- Data already on the drive: Formatting as extended storage deletes existing files. Plan a separate copy before setup.
An external SSD is sensible because it is quick to move and generally less vulnerable to knocks than a spinning drive, but the SSD label does not override the PS5’s launch restriction. The deciding question is whether you accept copying PS5 games back before playing them.

USB extended storage is removable, but it should be treated like active storage rather than a thumb drive. Improper disconnection can cause data loss, corruption, or damage.

- Use the PS5’s option to stop or safely disconnect USB extended storage before unplugging it.
- Do not remove the cable during formatting, moving, copying, or a system update that is using the drive.
- Keep the console and drive powered until the transfer-complete message appears.
- If the console reports an error, reconnect the same drive directly and allow the PS5 to check it before attempting another move.
- Keep a separate copy of irreplaceable captures or other files before formatting; the format process is destructive.
Games and apps on USB extended storage or M.2 expansion are not part of a normal PS5 console backup. A console restore therefore does not recreate those installations by itself; retain the storage device so the games can be recognized again, or plan to reinstall them.
What should you do if the PS5 does not recognize the drive?
Work through the limits in order rather than repeatedly formatting a drive that may simply be incompatible.

- If the drive still does not appear, consult Sony’s current compatibility guidance and the drive maker’s support information. Sony explicitly warns that not all devices are guaranteed to work.
If a previously working drive disappears after an unsafe removal, reconnect it directly and let the console complete its storage check. Continued errors are a reason to stop using the drive until its data is secured elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use two USB extended-storage drives on a PS5 at the same time?
No. Sony’s guidance says two or more USB extended-storage drives cannot be used simultaneously. Disconnect the active drive safely before attaching another one.
What happens to games on USB or M.2 storage after restoring a PS5 backup?
Games and apps installed on USB extended storage or M.2 expansion are not included in a normal PS5 console backup. Reconnect the storage device after the restore so the console can access those installations, or reinstall the games.
Is an SSD always faster than an HDD for PS4 games on PS5?
Sony says a device with a faster specification may result in shorter load times for PS4 games stored externally, but its current support pages do not provide a universal SSD-versus-HDD benchmark. Expect the result to vary by drive, connection, and game.
