When comparing listings, treat each console version as a separate entitlement to verify. A product page can describe a PS4 copy, a PS5 copy, or both, even when the edition name is otherwise identical. Do not assume that buying a PS4 Standard Edition automatically supplies the PS5 version, or that a Deluxe label guarantees both. Look for the platform badges or included-version wording on the exact product page and confirm what appears in the purchase confirmation before paying.
Also distinguish the base game from add-ons. An item in a bundle may be a digital soundtrack or an in-game resource pack rather than a separate playable game. Likewise, an expansion or story DLC is additional content, not necessarily the base game. Do not assume that a more expensive edition has a more useful bonus for you. If you will not use the listed items or media, the Standard edition may be the more direct purchase—provided it grants the game version you want.

For example, the U.S. Store’s separate Forspoken Digital Deluxe Upgrade listing names a digital mini artbook and soundtrack, story DLC, and a resource kit. It explicitly states, “This product does not include the main Forspoken game.” That offer adds listed content; it is not the same thing as buying the game or claiming a PS4-to-PS5 version upgrade.
Before buying any add-on, look for wording such as “game not included,” then check whether you already own the required base game and whether the add-on is compatible with your game edition and region. If the listing describes only extra content, do not treat it as a complete game purchase.
This is a common point of confusion because “upgrade” can describe two different transactions. In a PS4-to-PS5 version upgrade, the entitlement is to a PS5 version of a game you already own, subject to that title’s terms. Also separate eligibility from the method of claiming. An eligible digital PS4 purchase can be claimed through the Store offer on a disc-free or disc-capable PS5. A physical disc requires hardware that can read it, and the disc must remain available for play after the PS5 version is obtained. If your qualifying copy came from a PlayStation Plus benefit, check the individual game’s terms rather than treating it as a purchased digital copy.
How do I claim a PS4-to-PS5 version upgrade?
Start from the PS5 game’s Store hub and select the available upgrade offer. The steps differ depending on whether the qualifying PS4 game is on disc or digital.

If you own an eligible PS4 game disc
- Use a PS5 console with a disc drive and insert the qualifying PS4 disc.
- Open the game hub and review the upgrade offer shown for that game.
- Select the offer to download or purchase the PS5 version as presented.
- Keep the PS4 disc. PlayStation says it must be inserted each time you play the upgraded PS5 digital game.
The disc’s country or region must match the account, according to PlayStation’s upgrade guidance. A disc-free PS5 cannot establish disc ownership by itself.
Do not discard, trade in, or lend the qualifying disc if you plan to keep playing the upgraded digital version. The upgraded game is digital, but the original disc still acts as the required ownership check each time you play. That is different from an eligible digital purchase, which does not rely on inserting a disc. If the console cannot read the disc, or the disc region does not match the account, the disc route may not work as expected; verify both conditions before purchasing or attempting to claim an offer.
If you own an eligible digital PS4 purchase
- Find the PS5 version’s game hub in PlayStation Store on your PS5.
- Open the available upgrade offer and confirm the entitlement and any displayed price.
- Select the offer to claim or purchase the PS5 version, then download it from the game hub or Game Library.
This digital-purchase route works on disc-capable and disc-free PS5 consoles. If both PS4 and PS5 versions are in your library, PlayStation says the Game Library’s options menu lets you choose which version to download or play.
Take a moment to confirm which version is selected before downloading. If both versions are owned, the Game Library can present a choice between them; the existence of a PS5 entitlement does not mean the PS4 version has disappeared. This is particularly useful when an owner wants to manage which version is installed. The upgrade claim itself does not settle other title-specific questions, such as whether a save transfers, so check the game’s instructions if you need to carry progress across versions.

PlayStation’s guidance says, “An internet connection is required.” Check that you can connect when claiming the offer and follow the on-screen Store prompts. The displayed terms are the ones to rely on for that game. If you do not see an offer, re-check that you are signed into the account associated with the eligible purchase and that the game and purchase type qualify, then consult the title’s listing and PlayStation support guidance.
Can I upgrade a PS4 disc on a PS5 Digital Edition?
Only if the PS5 can read the disc. A PS4-disc upgrade requires a compatible disc drive, and the original disc remains necessary to play the upgraded digital game; a disc-free console without a compatible drive cannot use a physical copy to claim that offer.

PlayStation specifies its add-on disc drive for PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000/2100 slim models and PS5 Pro, with an internet connection required for pairing. Do not assume that every Digital Edition can accept the add-on: check the exact console model against PlayStation’s disc-drive compatibility listing before buying or recommending one. A digital PS4 entitlement does not require a disc drive to claim its upgrade offer.
In other words, “Digital Edition” by itself is not enough information to determine whether an add-on drive will work. Check the model number, not just the console’s marketing name, and confirm compatibility on PlayStation’s listing. The restriction matters specifically when relying on a physical PS4 disc: the drive must be able to read the qualifying disc, and the disc must still be inserted for each play session with the upgraded digital version.

- Confirm the base game is included. Check for an explicit statement that the full game is part of the product, especially for anything called an “upgrade,” “pack,” or “add-on.”
- Check the platform versions. Confirm whether the entitlement is for PS4, PS5, or both. Do not infer this from “Standard” or “Deluxe.”
- Read the exact extras list. Identify whether the bonus is playable content, in-game items, or digital media, and whether it is something you actually want.
- Check whether you already qualify for a version upgrade. Open the game’s PS5 Store hub and inspect the offer before purchasing a second full edition.
- Check physical-disc conditions. For a disc-based upgrade, confirm the console has a compatible drive, the disc region matches the account, and you can keep the disc available for play.
- Compare the current total cost. Use the current U.S. listing and offer for your account. Prices and upgrade terms can vary by title and can change; a past example is not a current quote.
A Standard edition is usually the straightforward choice when it includes the platform version you need and you do not value the extras. Choose Deluxe for the contents actually listed, not for the label. If you already own the PS4 game, check its specific PS5 upgrade offer before buying another edition.
A practical comparison is to write down the total you would pay for the option you are considering, then compare like with like: full game versus full game, or upgrade offer versus upgrade offer. Do not compare a full Deluxe edition with an extras-only add-on as though both include the base game. For a mistaken game or add-on purchase from the U.S. PlayStation Store, PlayStation’s cancellation policy generally allows a request within 14 days only if downloading or streaming has not begun, unless the item is faulty. This is a policy period, not a guarantee that every request will be accepted; other regions and purchase channels have their own rules. Read the U.S. PlayStation Store cancellation policy for the applicable terms.
That makes it worth checking the edition and platform details before starting a download or stream if you are unsure which product you purchased. The 14-day period is part of the U.S. Store’s cancellation policy, not a blanket return promise for every digital game.
