For most one-console buyers choosing on the breadth of games they can play, PS5 has the stronger documented all-round case. Its current US game listing combines an established PlayStation Studios catalog with named upcoming games, while also listing Xbox-published Fable and Forza Horizon 6 for PS5. Xbox Series X|S is a compelling alternative if its confirmed console exclusives are must-plays, you want eligible new games through Game Pass Ultimate on day one, or you value eligible digital purchases that work on Xbox and Windows PC. This is a comparison of documented access, not a numerical count or guarantee of future exclusives.
The platform and release information below reflects US listings and announcements available through October 30, 2026; future dates and service benefits can change. Check the individual game and current plan before buying.

| Xbox Series S | Players who want the Xbox digital library and do not need to use game discs | Digital-only console; no disc drive | Xbox Series S; Windows PC for eligible Play Anywhere games | Nov 2026 |
The figures are snapshots from the manufacturers’ US pages, not like-for-like counts of new games or future exclusives. PlayStation’s PS5 games page gives the PS4 compatibility figure; Xbox’s Game Pass page gives its tier-specific catalog figure.
Which console has the stronger long-term lineup?
PS5 is the better-supported default if “stronger lineup” means a wide range of games accessible on one console, including an established first-party catalog and named future releases. Xbox Series X|S can be the better personal choice when a particular Xbox console exclusive, Game Pass Ultimate’s eligible day-one releases, or Xbox-and-PC access matters more to you.

That distinction matters because publisher identity no longer reliably tells you where a game will be playable. Some Xbox-published games are listed for PS5; other announced titles are explicitly described as Xbox console exclusives. A fair comparison starts with specific games and platforms, not a count of showcase trailers or familiar studio names.
PlayStation’s US PS5 listing includes established games such as Astro Bot and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, alongside upcoming entries including God of War: Laufey and Until Dawn 2. It also lists 4:LOOP as TBA. These examples indicate a documented current catalog and a visible slate, not a promise that every announced date will hold. See the PlayStation game listing for its current entries.
Xbox’s future slate is meaningful too. Its June 2026 showcase described Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as Xbox console exclusives that are not timed. The showcase gave State of Decay 3 a 2027 window. These games are strong reasons to choose Xbox if they are central to your plans, but announcements and windows should not be treated as a complete long-term roadmap. Xbox’s showcase recap is the source for those statements.
Which announced games are actually on each console?
Check each game’s listed platforms and status separately. The following snapshot distinguishes a game already represented in a platform’s catalog from a dated future listing, a release window, or an announcement whose date is not established here.
| Game | What the researched listing says | What that means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Astro Bot; Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 | Included among games on PlayStation’s PS5 listing | Examples of an established PS5 catalog, rather than upcoming release dates |
| God of War: Laufey | PS5 listing gives February 16, 2027 | A dated future listing as of the research cutoff, not a guarantee |
| Until Dawn 2 | PS5 listing gives January 28, 2027 | A dated future listing as of the research cutoff, not a guarantee |
| Fable | PlayStation’s PS5 page lists February 23, 2027; Xbox’s June showcase also announced the game | Do not assume an Xbox-published title is Xbox-only |
| Forza Horizon 6 | PlayStation’s PS5 page lists January 26, 2027 | A further example of an Xbox-published game listed for PS5 |
| Gears of War: E-Day | Xbox’s June showcase called it an Xbox console exclusive and gave October 6, 2026 as its date | That announced date had passed by the October 30 research cutoff; confirm its current release status and platforms before buying |
| Clockwork Revolution | Xbox’s June showcase called it an Xbox console exclusive that is not timed; no release date was given in that recap | A confirmed exclusivity statement, but not a dated release |
| State of Decay 3 | Xbox announced a 2027 window | A window, not a specific launch date |
| Spyro: A Realm Beyond | Xbox’s October recap lists PS5 for spring 2027 | Another reason not to infer platforms from a publisher or showcase alone |
| Halo: Campaign Evolved | Xbox announced it for PlayStation; PlayStation’s July roundup also featured it | A showcase appearance does not by itself mean a game is exclusive to the host platform |
Release dates and platform listings can change. The table reflects the dated announcements and pages in the cited sources, not a live guarantee of availability. For a near-term purchase, confirm the game’s current store page and edition rather than relying on an older trailer or roundup. PlayStation’s July article, for example, selected 19 games still releasing in 2026 at that time; that was an editorial selection, not a count of PS5 exclusives or games that remained upcoming in October.
Will Xbox games come to PS5?
Some do, but there is no basis here for treating every Xbox-published game as a future PS5 release—or for assuming that none will appear there. The useful evidence is the platform plan for the individual game.

Fable and Forza Horizon 6 appear on PlayStation’s US PS5 games page with January and February 2027 dates. Halo: Campaign Evolved was also announced for PlayStation. In the other direction, Xbox’s June showcase explicitly called Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution non-timed Xbox console exclusives. Those statements are title-specific; they do not establish a universal publishing policy.
There is a practical difference between “announced for both” and “might eventually be ported.” A named PS5 listing is evidence of planned PS5 access. An Xbox-exclusive announcement is evidence of the stated console plan, but it does not tell you whether a release could change later. If a game is the deciding factor, use its official platform listing and release status rather than extrapolating from the publisher’s other games.
Is Xbox still worth it for exclusives?
Yes—if the specific games Xbox has identified as console exclusives are games you genuinely want to play. Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution were expressly described by Xbox as Xbox console exclusives that are not timed. That makes them more decision-relevant than a general expectation that any Xbox-published game must stay on Xbox.
For timing, be careful with the showcase’s Gears of War: E-Day date: October 6, 2026 was already in the past at the October 30 research cutoff. The available information establishes what Xbox announced, not the game’s verified current availability. Clockwork Revolution had no date in that recap. State of Decay 3 had a 2027 window, which is less precise than a launch date.

A large announcement list is not the same as a large number of exclusive blockbusters: some games are third-party or cross-platform, while some have only a window or no date. Separate games you can play now from announced games, and separate console exclusivity from timed exclusivity or PC availability.
PS5, meanwhile, is not a choice to forgo every Xbox-published game. The dated PS5 listings for Fable and Forza Horizon 6 are concrete counterexamples to that assumption. For a one-console buyer, the best question is not “Which brand owns more studios?” but “Which games I care about are available on the console I am buying, and when?”

Does Game Pass make Xbox better long term?
It can, especially for a player who wants to sample a changing catalog and values eligible new releases on day one. It does not make every Xbox game free, guarantee that every announced title is included, or guarantee that a specific game stays in the catalog.
Xbox’s current US comparison says Game Pass Ultimate includes eligible new games on day one. Its Premium tier adds new Xbox-published games within one year, a different benefit and timetable. The Xbox plan page lists 500+ games for Ultimate in its current snapshot; that figure is neither the number of day-one games nor a promise about a particular title. Check the plan’s current entitlement for the exact game before subscribing or renewing.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →PlayStation Plus has a different structure. Extra offers access to its Game Catalog, while Premium adds classics, game trials, and cloud streaming. These are not interchangeable with Xbox’s tier names or day-one language. A library subscription is useful if you will play enough of the included catalog while the games remain available; if you mostly buy a few permanent favorites, buying those games individually may fit better.
Catalogs change, and a subscription is access under current terms rather than ownership of every included game. Before basing a multi-year console decision on a particular game, check its platform, the required tier, whether it is currently included, and whether the plan’s stated benefit applies to that title. See the current Xbox Game Pass comparison and PlayStation Plus plans.
Can Xbox and PC share the same game library?
For eligible digital purchases, Xbox Play Anywhere can make a single purchase usable on supported Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, with shared progress. That is a meaningful advantage for someone who expects to alternate between console and PC, but it applies to participating games—not every Xbox game and not physical discs.
Confirm the Play Anywhere designation on the particular digital game’s listing before buying. A disc does not automatically grant a Windows PC copy, and a console game not marked for the program should not be assumed to carry over. Xbox describes the eligibility and shared-progress feature on its Xbox Play Anywhere page.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This benefit can change the comparison even if your main TV remains attached to a console: a supported digital title may be available across both devices without buying it twice. But it is a game-by-game entitlement, so count only games you have verified—not the entire Xbox catalog—as shared access.
What happens to your PS4, Xbox One, and older games?
Your existing library may be more valuable than an unreleased game. PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, and PlayStation’s US page presents a figure of 4,000+ compatible PS4 games. That is a backward-compatibility snapshot, not a count of new PS5 releases.
Xbox Series X|S supports most Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. “Selected” matters: compatibility is determined by the supported-title catalog, not by a general four-generation slogan. Check the exact older game before assuming it runs. Xbox’s backward-compatibility announcement reported more than 500,000 hours of compatibility gameplay testing before the Series X|S launch in 2020; that is a historical Xbox-reported effort, not an independent 2026 benchmark or a current compatibility count. Its 2020 compatibility update provides the context.
Physical ownership adds another check. Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot play discs. If you have Xbox One or older games on disc, Series S cannot use that copy; compare a disc-capable Series X configuration instead and confirm the game’s compatibility. PlayStation says many PS5 games have both physical Blu-ray and digital editions, but not every game has a physical release. Also confirm the PS5 configuration and exact edition before counting a disc as usable. The PlayStation PS5 FAQ and listing explains that physical availability varies by game.
Neither platform’s headline compatibility figure means every old game works, nor that every enhancement or feature from its original console carries over. Check the supported list and the copy format you own. For a collection built over several generations, those title-by-title checks can outweigh an uncertain future release slate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose between Xbox Series X and Series S?
Choose based on game format and the library you already own, not just on the games announced for Xbox. Series S is digital-only; it is unsuitable if you need to play physical discs. A Series X configuration is the more relevant Xbox option for a buyer who wants disc access, but check the specific model’s disc capability rather than assuming every configuration is identical.

If your Xbox library is already digital, or you are comfortable buying digitally and checking compatibility title by title, Series S can still provide access to the Xbox ecosystem and eligible services. If your shelves contain Xbox One or older discs, or you want to buy physical editions where they exist, a disc-capable console matters. Physical availability is not universal even on a console that accepts discs, so verify the individual game and edition.
The same principle applies to PS5: do not assume every named game has a retail disc simply because the platform supports physical releases. PlayStation’s FAQ says many PS5 games are available on Blu-ray as well as digitally, while explicitly noting that not all are. Match the specific model, game, and format you intend to use.
How can you make a lineup comparison that will still be useful next year?
Build a short, personal list of must-play games and label each one by present access and certainty. A platform comparison becomes much clearer when it is about your games rather than abstract catalog size.
- Name two or three non-negotiable games. Include current favorites as well as announced releases. If you have no must-play games, compare the subscriptions and back catalogs you would actually use.
- Verify the platform for each title. Use the game’s official listing, not the publisher logo or the console showcase where it appeared. Record whether it is available now, has a dated listing, has only a release window, or remains undated.
- Mark the certainty accurately. A date is an announced plan, a window is less specific, and TBA is not a release commitment. The sources here do not establish a complete roadmap beyond the announced slate.
- Choose a buying model. Compare the actual Game Pass Ultimate or Premium benefit for each Xbox game, and the Extra or Premium catalog entitlement for each PlayStation game. Do not treat a catalog count as a promise about your chosen title.
- Check your other devices. If you own a Windows PC, verify whether the exact digital game is Xbox Play Anywhere. If you own console discs, check compatibility and whether the model you want has a disc drive.
- Recheck before spending. Release plans, catalog membership, and service terms can change. Confirm the current platform and plan listing at the time you subscribe or buy.
One useful example: if your shortlist is Astro Bot, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and God of War: Laufey, the documented PS5 catalog and listing point toward PS5. If it is Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution, Xbox’s express console-exclusive statements weigh heavily—while you still need to verify current availability for the former and await a date for the latter. If your list centers on Fable or Forza Horizon 6, the PS5 listings mean that publisher alone does not settle the choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the listed 2027 game dates guaranteed?
No. They are dates shown on current listings or announced plans at the research cutoff, and release plans can change. Recheck the individual game’s official page near purchase or launch.
Does a game shown at an Xbox showcase have to be an Xbox exclusive?
No. A showcase appearance identifies where it was presented, not necessarily every platform it will support. For example, Xbox announced Halo: Campaign Evolved for PlayStation, so check the named game’s own platform plan.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Game Pass mean I own the games I play?
No. A subscription provides access under the service’s current terms; catalog membership can change. If permanent access to a particular title matters, check its purchase option and platform before relying on a subscription.
Can I use an Xbox Play Anywhere disc on a Windows PC?
No automatic PC entitlement follows from owning a disc. The cross-device benefit described by Xbox applies to eligible digital purchases, so verify the game’s Play Anywhere listing before buying.
