PS5 Pro Review: Is Sony’s Premium Console Worth It?

The PS5 Pro can improve visuals and performance in supported games, but its value depends on your library, display, and the cost of its separate disc drive.

The PS5 Pro is worth considering if you’re buying your first PlayStation 5, play games with Pro-specific enhancements, and have a display that can show the difference. For an existing PS5 owner whose library is mostly unenhanced games—or who plays on a screen where higher frame rates and finer image detail matter less—the upgrade is harder to justify. In the U.S., Tom’s Guide reported an $899 recommended price in an April 24, 2026 comparison; that is a dated recommended-price figure, not a live retailer quote. Physical-game owners also need to budget for the separately sold disc drive.

What does the PS5 Pro actually improve?

The Pro’s advantage is primarily in how games are rendered, not in a new generation of games. Sony’s 2024 specifications list 67% more GPU compute units, memory that is 28% faster, and rendering that is up to 45% faster than the then-current PS5. These are Sony’s hardware and performance claims, not independent results that apply equally to every game.

Sony says the additional capacity supports higher fidelity and smoother frame rates, including enhanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its AI-assisted image upscaling technology. On its U.S. product page, Sony says compatible games can run at 60fps or up to 120fps with ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K resolution using PSSR on a 4K TV. “Compatible games” is the key qualification: this is a capability for supported titles, not a promise that every game runs at 4K and 120fps with ray tracing enabled. High refresh rates also require a suitable display.

In practical terms, a game may use the Pro’s headroom to make a performance-focused mode look sharper, improve frame-rate stability, add ray-tracing effects, or offer a choice between visual detail and speed. The developer decides how to use it, so the result varies by title and mode.

  • Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.

What reviewers found—and what they did not establish

Independent reviews describe visible improvements in supported games, particularly smoother play, but not a uniform transformation. GamesRadar+ found games could look better and run more smoothly, citing Spider-Man 2 as a strong implementation, while noting that the improvement varies across the catalogue. Its review also questioned whether the refinements justified the price for its reviewer, with the answer depending partly on the player’s screen.

WIRED rated the Pro 8/10 and used Alan Wake II to illustrate a real trade-off: the game’s Performance mode prioritizes 60fps, while its Quality mode enables ray tracing. That example shows why “better graphics and faster performance” may not mean both are maximized in every title at once. It is a specific game’s mode choice, not a rule for all PS5 Pro games.

The reviewed coverage does not establish a standardized, cross-game benchmark set with comparable frame-time measurements. Treat claims about how much smoother a particular game feels as review observations, not guaranteed results for your library.

PS5 Pro versus standard PS5: the buying differences

Tom’s Guide’s U.S. comparison dated April 24, 2026 reported recommended prices of $899 for the PS5 Pro, $599 for the standard digital PS5, and $649 for the disc PS5. These are reported U.S. recommended prices after increases in August 2025 and April 2026—not live offers or prices for other countries. Sony’s original U.S. launch MSRP for the Pro was $699.99 in 2024, a historical figure rather than its current reported recommended price.

The standard PS5 remains the more economical choice if you mainly want access to the PlayStation library. The Pro’s premium buys additional rendering headroom and more storage; it does not guarantee that every game will look or run noticeably better.

Check your games before you upgrade

Look up the titles you actually play, not just the most impressive examples in a trailer or review. A PS5 Pro Enhanced game can receive a title-specific update using the newer hardware. Game Boost is a separate feature that may improve or stabilize performance in some compatible PS4 and PS5 games; it does not mean every older game receives a bespoke Pro version.

  • For each supported game, check what its update changes: resolution, frame rate, ray tracing, or available graphics modes. “Enhanced” alone does not specify the outcome you will see.
  • If most of your playtime is in games without a Pro-specific update, assume the benefit may be limited rather than treating the hardware specifications as a universal upgrade.

Sony’s current U.S. product page says the Pro can play over 8,500 PS4 games. That broad compatibility figure is not a claim that all those games receive Pro enhancements.

Will your TV or monitor show the difference?

The Pro makes the most sense when your display and preferences align with what a game’s update provides. A 4K screen can show higher-resolution output; a display that supports high refresh rates is needed to benefit from modes targeting up to 120fps. The supported game, its selected mode, and the display all matter.

  • You prioritize smooth motion: A high-refresh display and games with performance-focused Pro modes give the higher frame-rate capability a chance to matter.
  • You prioritize visual detail: A 4K display and games that use PSSR, improved image quality, or ray tracing are a stronger match.
  • You use a typical living-room setup: If you sit at a distance or play titles with little visible improvement, the upgrade may be difficult to notice. This is a buyer-fit judgment, not a guarantee about every screen or game.

Account for the disc drive and your existing setup

The PS5 Pro is sold without an optical drive. If you own PS5 or PS4 discs, Blu-rays, or other physical media you expect to use, add the separate PS5 Disc Drive to the total cost and confirm current compatibility and price before buying. If your library is digital, the missing drive is less of a concern.

Sony’s launch announcement says the Pro includes a DualSense controller, pre-installed Astro’s Playroom, and a 2TB SSD. Sony’s setup guide explains how to install the separate disc drive and how to transfer an M.2 SSD from an existing PS5. The Pro also supports Wi-Fi 7, but Sony says the networking benefit requires a compatible router. The larger internal drive and wireless capability are useful extras only if they address a need in your setup.

Who should buy the PS5 Pro?

It is a stronger fit if

  • You are choosing your first PS5 and want the higher-end model.
  • You regularly play titles with Pro-specific enhancements.
  • You value smoother performance, image quality, or ray tracing enough to pay a substantial premium.
  • Your TV or monitor supports the resolution or refresh rate that the games’ enhanced modes target.

Keep your standard PS5 if

  • You already own a PS5 and it meets your needs.
  • Your favorite games are not meaningfully enhanced, or you are satisfied with their current performance.
  • You would need to buy a display as well to benefit from the Pro’s capabilities.
  • You use physical games and the combined cost of the console and separate drive outweighs the improvements you expect.

Sony CEO Hideaki Nishino described the Pro as the company’s “most advanced PlayStation to date,” reflecting Sony’s positioning. That does not make it the right-value choice for every player. The decisive question is whether the specific games you play use its extra hardware in a way your display can reveal.
