Insider Gaming reported that Ubisoft was developing two distinct Far Cry projects: a single-player game internally codenamed Blackbird and an extraction shooter codenamed Maverick. Its report described changes to the series’ movement and survival systems, but Ubisoft has not confirmed those codenames or the rumored gameplay in the official materials reviewed. A later report said Maverick had been rebooted, while a February 2026 report quoted Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot saying two Far Cry projects were in development without identifying them.
What are Far Cry 7 and Project Maverick?
In an exclusive published December 16, 2024, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson reported that Ubisoft had separated a project originally developed under the internal codename Talisker into two projects: Blackbird, described as the next mainline Far Cry, and Maverick, described as an extraction shooter. These are reported development codenames, not confirmed public titles. Insider Gaming’s original report attributed its information to unnamed sources.

The report said both projects were being developed at Ubisoft Montreal and had moved from the Dunia engine to Snowdrop. It also described a movement overhaul involving tactical sprinting, sliding, and vaulting. Those details remain reported rather than officially confirmed.

Every project description in this comparison comes from reporting, not an Ubisoft feature announcement. Ubisoft’s 2021 Far Cry 6 post-launch announcement concerns that released game and does not confirm these projects.

Is Far Cry 7 really on a timer?
Insider Gaming reported that Blackbird would give players 24 real-life hours, equivalent to 72 in-game hours, to rescue the protagonist’s family. The report said a wristwatch would display the countdown. This is a rumored game mechanic—not a confirmed feature or a real-world statistic—and the report does not establish how the timer would work during pauses, failed attempts, or other gameplay situations.
The same story said inventory and looting elements associated with Maverick were appearing in Blackbird. One unnamed source argued that such systems made sense for a character urgently trying to rescue family. The source’s identity and role were not stated, and the comment is not a Ubisoft statement.
Was the Far Cry extraction game cancelled or rebooted?
On March 4, 2025, Insider Gaming reported that Maverick had been rebooted and taken back to prototyping with Ubisoft Sherbrooke, alongside reported team changes. The outlet said the precise reason for the reboot was unclear. This was follow-up reporting, not a Ubisoft announcement; it indicates a reported change in development, but does not establish that the project was cancelled. Read the follow-up report.
Separately, Ubisoft’s March 27, 2025 corporate announcement described a dedicated subsidiary built around Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, with ambitions spanning narrative solo experiences and multiplayer offerings. That is company-level strategy, not confirmation of Blackbird, Maverick, or their rumored features. Ubisoft’s announcement provides the organizational context.

What has Ubisoft confirmed about the projects?
PC Gamer reported on February 20, 2026, that Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said: “On Far Cry, anticipation is high, and we currently have two very promising projects in development.” His reported statement supports the existence of two Far Cry projects at the franchise level, but does not name Blackbird or Maverick or confirm their gameplay. PC Gamer’s report quotes the statement.
The official Far Cry news index reviewed for this article did not show an announcement confirming Blackbird, Maverick, the reported mechanics, or a release date. That is a limit on what the reviewed official materials establish, not proof that no further announcement exists.

When is Far Cry 7 coming out?
Insider Gaming’s December 2024 story said internal release targets had shifted from 2025 to 2026 because of development complexity. That was an internally reported target at the time, not a public release window. The later reporting and official materials cited here do not establish a release date for either rumored project. Treat any claim that Far Cry 7 is scheduled for a particular date as unconfirmed unless Ubisoft announces it.
