Wait for PS6 only if your current PS5 is good enough and you accept that Sony has not announced a consumer launch date, price, specifications, backward-compatibility policy or launch-exclusive lineup. As of October 19, 2026, PS5 Pro is a released product; “PS6” is only a shorthand for Sony’s unannounced next-generation platform.
The short answer: certainty versus potential
This decision is not a normal specification comparison. One side is a documented console you can buy and use today; the other is a platform Sony says it is developing but has not presented as a retail product. That difference matters more than any rumor about teraflops, release windows or launch games.

PS5 Pro launched on November 7, 2024. Sony documents its upgraded graphics processor, more advanced ray tracing, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling, sharper 4K output and high-frame-rate support in compatible games. It also includes 2 TB of storage. Those are current, testable features, not projections.

Sony’s 2026 investor Q&A confirms work on a next-generation PlayStation platform and related content. The statement discusses changing player needs, accessibility and artificial intelligence as a foundational technology, but it does not announce a retail name, release date, price, final hardware specifications, backward compatibility or launch software. Calling that product “PS6” is convenient shorthand, not an official specification.

What PS5 Pro gives you today
Higher image quality without abandoning performance modes
The Pro’s purpose is to give supported games more rendering headroom. Its upgraded GPU can improve visual detail and effects; advanced ray tracing can produce more convincing reflections, shadows and lighting; and PSSR reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower internal resolution. In games that implement the features well, you may get a sharper 4K presentation while retaining a higher frame rate instead of choosing between a quality mode and a performance mode.
These gains are game-dependent. A title must receive PS5 Pro support to use the full feature set, and the result can vary by scene, graphics mode and developer implementation. The console does not automatically turn every PS5 game into a Pro-enhanced experience.
Storage and physical media
PS5 Pro ships with 2 TB of internal storage, useful for a library of large current-generation installs. The console’s disc drive is a separate purchase rather than an included component. If you buy boxed games, used discs or 4K Blu-ray movies, calculate the drive and its availability as part of the system’s total cost before ordering. A digital-only setup avoids that add-on but limits how you acquire and resell games.

Sony announced a US launch MSRP of $699.99 for PS5 Pro on November 7, 2024. Sony later announced PS5-family price changes effective April 2, 2026, so that launch MSRP is historical and should not be treated as the live price in every region or store. Check the current price where you live, then add the optional disc drive if you need one and any storage expansion your library requires.

What Sony has—and has not—said about PS6
Confirmed: a next-generation platform is in development
Sony’s official investor material says the company is developing next-generation PlayStation hardware and content. It frames the work around evolving player expectations, accessibility and AI. This establishes an active platform-development effort.
Not confirmed: the details buyers need
No official source reviewed for this guide provides a consumer launch date, retail price, final specifications, product name, backward-compatibility policy or launch-exclusive list. There is therefore no defensible answer to “When is PS6 coming out?” beyond saying that Sony has not announced one. Rumored years, prices and performance figures should not determine a purchase made in 2026.
The same caution applies to exclusives. Sony has not confirmed which games would launch only on the next-generation platform, whether PS5 games would receive free or paid upgrades, or how long cross-generation support would last. Waiting may eventually deliver a larger generational leap, but the timing and software value are unknown.

| Game | Current PS5 listing | What it means for this decision |
|---|---|---|
| Marvel’s Wolverine | September 15, 2026 | PlayStation editorial coverage describes it as exclusive to PS5 consoles, making PS5 ownership relevant at launch. |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | November 19, 2026 | Listed for PS5; the PlayStation Store listing carries a PS5 Pro Enhanced designation. |
| Until Dawn 2 | January 28, 2027 | A dated PS5 release in the near-term pipeline. |
| God of War: Laufey | Date not fully specified in the reviewed catalog | Shows continued first-party activity, but does not provide a purchase deadline. |
| MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls | Date or window varies by listing | Another announced project for the PS5 ecosystem. |
| SAROS | Date or window varies by listing | Announced PS5 software; final platform details may change. |
| Phantom Blade Zero | Date or window varies by listing | Part of the announced pipeline, with timing not sufficient to infer PS6 support. |
| Horizon Hunters Gathering | Date or window varies by listing | Listed as an upcoming PlayStation project. |
| Kena: Scars of Kosmora | Date or window varies by listing | Listed in the current catalog, without evidence of a PS6 launch plan. |
For a buyer who wants to play these games as they arrive, PS5 Pro is the only option in this comparison with documented compatibility. GTA VI is especially relevant: its November 19, 2026 PS5 listing and PS5 Pro Enhanced label provide an official reason to choose the higher-end model if you care about image quality and performance. The label does not guarantee a particular resolution or frame rate.

Who should buy PS5 Pro now?
You do not own a PS5
If you want the announced PS5 games at release, buying a known system avoids paying for an indefinite wait. The Pro is the premium choice within that family: you receive the PS5 catalog plus the possibility of better image quality and frame rates in supported titles.
You have a 4K or high-refresh display
PS5 Pro’s advantages are easiest to appreciate on a capable 4K television or monitor, particularly one with a high refresh rate and good HDR performance. On an older 1080p display, the extra rendering budget may be harder to see, so the standard PS5 can be a more proportionate purchase even though it is outside this article’s main comparison.
You plan to play demanding releases at launch
GTA VI’s official PS5 Pro Enhanced designation makes the Pro a rational choice for players who want the best-supported version available on the launch platform. The same logic applies to any future game that receives a documented Pro mode, but you should check each title’s final feature list rather than assume enhancement.

You value a known product more than a possible generational leap
PS5 Pro has a published feature set, existing accessories and a current software catalog. That certainty is valuable when your purchase is tied to a specific game or a fixed date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should wait for PS6?
You already own a satisfactory PS5
If your current console runs the games you want at an acceptable image quality and frame rate, there is no need to upgrade merely because Sony is developing its next platform. Waiting preserves your option to evaluate the eventual launch price, specifications and game lineup with real information.
You want a generational change, not an enhanced PS5
PS5 Pro is an upscale within the PS5 family. Its value comes from rendering improvements, not a new software ecosystem. If your priority is a major architectural shift, a new controller generation or a clearly separated platform, waiting is the only way to pursue that possibility—but the size and timing of the leap are unknown.

Waiting makes sense only if you are comfortable not playing the listed PS5 games at launch. Sony has not said whether those titles will later receive native versions on the next platform, free upgrades or cloud alternatives.

Should you buy a standard PS5 instead?
Budget can make this a three-way decision. A standard PS5 may be more sensible if you want access to the same core PS5 catalog but do not have a high-end display or care about ray tracing and PSSR. However, that is a separate recommendation from choosing between PS5 Pro and waiting for PS6. Do not assume the standard model is automatically better value: compare its current local price, storage, included or optional disc hardware and the cost of adding storage later.
Physical games, digital releases and long-term ownership
Sony has announced that, from January 2028, new PlayStation games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. Earlier disc releases remain playable. This policy affects collectors and buyers who trade, lend or purchase used games, but it does not reveal whether a future PS6 will include a disc drive or support existing media.
For a physical-game buyer choosing PS5 Pro, budget for the separate drive and confirm regional stock. For a digital buyer, the drive cost disappears, but your library is tied more closely to your account and the platform’s storefront policies. Neither path proves what Sony will do with PS6 hardware.

A practical buying process
- List the games you need to play in the next 18 months. Mark whether each is currently listed for PS5 and whether its date is firm, a window or unspecified.
- Check your display. A 4K, high-refresh screen makes Pro features more relevant; a basic 1080p set reduces the visible benefit.
- Choose physical or digital ownership. If you buy discs, add the separate drive to the Pro’s cost and consider the January 2028 digital-release policy.
- Set a hard waiting rule. Wait only if your existing PS5 is adequate and you accept that Sony has not supplied a launch date or price for the next platform.
- Recheck official listings before ordering. Release dates, prices, PS5 Pro enhancements and regional availability can change.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating “PS6” rumors as specifications. Sony’s confirmation of development does not validate a leaked date, price or performance figure.
- Assuming every upcoming game is an exclusive. The catalog establishes PS5 listings; it does not establish exclusivity or PS6 versions for every title.
- Assuming PS5 Pro improves every game. The strongest benefits require developer support.
- Using the 2024 launch MSRP as today’s universal price. Sony announced PS5-family price changes effective April 2, 2026, and local prices vary.
- Forgetting the disc-drive cost. It is not included with PS5 Pro.
- Buying for an imaginary launch window. If you cannot name an official PS6 date, do not build your budget around one.
Decision guide
| Your situation | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| No PS5, wants Wolverine or GTA VI as soon as possible | PS5 Pro | It is available now and officially supports the current PS5 pipeline. |
| Owns PS5, satisfied with its performance | Wait | No confirmed PS6 details justify an immediate upgrade, but there is also no need to buy a Pro. |
| Owns a 4K/120 Hz display and prioritizes visuals | PS5 Pro | Its documented GPU, ray tracing and PSSR features target this use case. |
| Primarily buys boxed games | PS5 Pro plus disc drive, or wait | Include the separate drive now; PS6 physical support is unknown. |
| Most important goal is a true generational leap | Wait | PS5 Pro is an enhanced PS5, while the next generation’s scope remains undisclosed. |
Verdict
PS5 Pro is the defensible purchase for a new buyer who wants upcoming PlayStation software with premium image quality and a documented feature set. Its strongest case is practical: the console exists, the PS5 catalog is active, and GTA VI is listed for PS5 with a PS5 Pro Enhanced designation.
Waiting for PS6 is sensible for an existing PS5 owner whose console is meeting expectations and who prefers to make a generational purchase later. It is not sensible to wait because a specific PS6 date, price or exclusive lineup has been announced—none has been officially provided as of October 19, 2026.
