Choose PULSE 3D if you want a straightforward PS5 headset with a 3.5 mm fallback, PS5 EQ presets and familiar game/chat controls. Choose PULSE Elite if you need much longer battery life, Bluetooth at the same time as console audio, a retractable boom microphone or PlayStation Link support for PS5, PC, Mac and PlayStation Portal. Neither headset can be declared the overall sound-quality winner from the available evidence: PlayStation describes different driver and tuning approaches, but there is no controlled comparison or independent measurement establishing that one sounds better.

This comparison explains the documented differences, device compatibility, controls, microphone designs, battery claims and upgrade trade-offs so you can match the headset to the way you play.

What is the main difference between PULSE 3D and PULSE Elite?

PULSE 3D is the simpler, more broadly adaptable model. It uses an included wireless adapter, can connect by 3.5 mm cable for PS VR and mobile devices, and provides PS5 EQ presets, game/chat mixing and mic monitoring. PlayStation says its wireless battery lasts up to 12 hours.

PULSE Elite is the feature-heavy model. It uses PlayStation Link, also supports Bluetooth, can play audio from a Link device and a Bluetooth device simultaneously, and uses planar magnetic drivers. It has a retractable microphone with AI-enhanced noise rejection and a manufacturer claim of up to 30 hours of battery life, including up to two hours of use after a 10-minute charge.

Which headset has better sound for PS5 games?

There is no reliable evidence here to call PULSE Elite or PULSE 3D the sound-quality winner. The official descriptions emphasize different technologies rather than a controlled test, frequency-response chart or independent listening measurement.

How PULSE 3D handles PS5 audio

PlayStation says PULSE 3D was specifically tuned for the 3D Audio made possible by PS5 and describes it as fine-tuned for 3D Audio on both PS4 and PS5. On PS5, you can select among three built-in EQ presets and save three additional user settings. That gives you a practical way to adjust the balance for different games or listening preferences without adding software to another device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The headset also includes game/chat mix controls, master volume, mic mute and mic monitoring. These controls are useful when you want to change the balance during a party or multiplayer match rather than opening a console menu.

What PULSE Elite’s planar magnetic drivers mean

PULSE Elite uses planar magnetic drivers, a different driver design from the one identified for PULSE 3D. PlayStation says the Elite supports 3D Audio cues in compatible PS5 games. That specification tells you how the headset is built and what spatial feature it supports; it does not establish that it produces clearer dialogue, deeper bass or more accurate positioning than PULSE 3D.

If your decision depends primarily on sound, treat both official descriptions as feature information, not as a laboratory ranking. Choose based on the EQ controls, connection requirements and microphone or battery needs you can verify.

What wireless connections do the two headsets use?

The wireless systems are not interchangeable in how you plan a setup. PULSE 3D relies on its included wireless adapter, while PULSE Elite uses PlayStation Link and adds Bluetooth.

PULSE 3D’s adapter and wired option

The PULSE 3D adapter is intended for compatible PS5 and PS4 consoles and compatible Windows or macOS computers. The headset can also be connected with a 3.5 mm cable for PS VR and mobile devices. In those wired PS VR and mobile uses, the built-in headset controls are not supported, so volume, mixing and microphone functions may need to be handled by the connected device.

This combination suits a player who mainly uses a console or computer but wants a conventional cable option for a phone, tablet or PS VR session. It also avoids requiring Bluetooth pairing on the mobile device.

PULSE Elite’s PlayStation Link and Bluetooth

PULSE Elite connects through PlayStation Link to compatible PS5, PC, Mac and PlayStation Portal devices. It can also pair with phones or tablets over Bluetooth. PlayStation describes simultaneous audio from a PlayStation Link device and a Bluetooth device, allowing a console or Portal session to remain audible while audio from a paired mobile device is also playing.

That feature is especially relevant if you listen to a phone call, music, a podcast or a second audio source while gaming. It is a different capability from simply switching between two paired devices: simultaneous playback is the documented behavior, although the exact balance and controls depend on the connected devices and software.

How do the microphones compare for party chat?

PULSE 3D has two hidden microphones with noise-cancelling technology. PULSE Elite has a flexible retractable microphone and AI-enhanced noise rejection. The Elite’s boom can be extended when you need it and retracted when you do not, while the 3D keeps its microphones integrated into the earcup design.

When PULSE 3D’s hidden microphones make sense

The concealed design keeps the headset visually streamlined and removes a protruding boom to move out of the way. It still provides mic mute and mic monitoring controls, so you can manage chat without relying entirely on PS5 menus. The available specifications do not include an independent voice-quality test, so do not assume the hidden microphones will outperform the Elite in every room.

When to choose Elite’s retractable microphone

The flexible boom places the microphone closer to your mouth when extended and lets you physically stow it when you are listening without speaking. PlayStation also identifies AI-enhanced noise rejection. That combination is the more explicit choice for frequent party chat, streaming-style communication or a setup where you want a visible microphone position you can adjust.

Neither product description provides a measured noise-reduction amount or a standardized voice-chat comparison. Your room, microphone position and the chat application’s processing will still affect the result.

Which headset lasts longer between charges?

On the manufacturer’s figures, PULSE Elite has the substantial battery advantage. PlayStation claims up to 30 hours for Elite and up to 12 hours of wireless play for PULSE 3D. Those are “up to” figures from the manufacturer, not independent endurance-test results; actual runtime varies with volume, connection mode, microphone use and other conditions.

Battery question PULSE 3D PULSE Elite
Published maximum Up to 12 hours of wireless play Up to 30 hours
Quick-charge figure Not stated in the product information Up to two hours of battery life from a 10-minute charge
Best fit Shorter sessions or players who routinely recharge Long sessions, travel or fewer charging interruptions

Elite’s quick-charge claim changes the recovery plan after you forget to charge: a 10-minute top-up is specified to provide up to two hours of battery life. PULSE 3D’s published material does not provide an equivalent quick-charge figure.

Are both headsets compatible with PS5, PS4, PC and mobile devices?

Both are official PlayStation wireless options for PS5, but their broader device support differs. PULSE 3D has the wider explicitly documented mix of adapter and 3.5 mm uses; PULSE Elite has the more modern Link-and-Bluetooth arrangement.

PULSE 3D compatibility

  • Wireless adapter support is listed for PS5, PS4 and compatible Windows/macOS computers.
  • A 3.5 mm cable connection is identified for PS VR and mobile devices.
  • When used through the PS VR or mobile cable connection, the headset’s built-in controls are not supported.

“Compatible” computers are not defined as every Windows or macOS configuration. The adapter must be recognized by the operating system, and available functions can vary by application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PULSE Elite compatibility

  • PlayStation Link support is listed for compatible PS5, PC, Mac and PlayStation Portal devices.
  • Bluetooth support is listed for phones and tablets.
  • PlayStation describes simultaneous audio from a Link device and a Bluetooth device.

Elite is therefore the more natural fit if PlayStation Portal or Bluetooth is central to your setup. PULSE 3D is the more flexible choice if you specifically need a 3.5 mm connection for PS VR or a mobile device.

Check the model number when identifying a headset

PlayStation Support lists PULSE 3D model numbers CFI-ZWH1 and CFI-ZWD1 as compatible with PS5 consoles. PULSE Elite model numbers listed there are CFI-ZWH2, CFI-ZWA2 and CFI-ZPH2. If a headset is not pairing or you are checking a listing, read the model number on the product or packaging instead of relying only on the retail name.

What controls and accessories do you get?

PULSE 3D’s documented controls include master volume, game/chat mix, microphone mute and mic monitoring. Its PS5 EQ controls add three presets and three user-saveable slots. These controls are built around changing chat and game balance during console play.

PULSE Elite’s standout physical accessory is a charging hanger. PlayStation says the hanger can be mounted or placed on a surface. Additional mounting hardware, such as screws, is not included, so a wall-mounted installation requires hardware suitable for your surface.

The available Elite description emphasizes Link, Bluetooth, the retractable microphone and battery rather than listing the same PS5 EQ preset layout as PULSE 3D. If custom EQ slots are a deciding feature, PULSE 3D has the clearer documented advantage.

How do you choose between them for your setup?

Start with the device or feature you cannot compromise on, then use the table below. This avoids treating a higher specification in one area as proof that the headset is better in every area.

If your priority is… Better documented match Reason
PS5 EQ presets and saved custom profiles PULSE 3D Three presets and three saveable user slots are listed.
PS VR or mobile use over a 3.5 mm cable PULSE 3D A 3.5 mm option is documented, with controls unavailable in those wired contexts.
PlayStation Portal PULSE Elite PlayStation Link compatibility includes Portal.
Bluetooth phone or tablet audio PULSE Elite Bluetooth and simultaneous Link-plus-Bluetooth audio are documented.
Longest stated battery life PULSE Elite PlayStation claims up to 30 hours versus up to 12 for PULSE 3D.
Retractable boom microphone PULSE Elite Elite has a flexible retractable mic and AI-enhanced noise rejection.
Simple adapter-based PS5/PS4 setup PULSE 3D The included wireless adapter is documented for both consoles.
Independently proven superior sound Neither established The available sources do not contain controlled audio measurements or comfort testing.

Is PULSE Elite a worthwhile upgrade from PULSE 3D?

Elite is a meaningful upgrade only when its added capabilities solve a problem you actually have. The clearest upgrade reasons are the longer manufacturer-rated battery, quick charging, Bluetooth with simultaneous Link audio, PlayStation Portal support, planar magnetic drivers and the retractable microphone.

If your PULSE 3D already meets your needs on PS5, you use its EQ presets and 3.5 mm option, and you do not need Bluetooth mixing or Portal connectivity, the documented feature differences do not prove that replacing it will improve sound quality. There is no independent evidence in the available material establishing a universal audio or comfort advantage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upgrade when these conditions apply

  • You regularly run out of battery during long sessions.
  • You want phone or tablet audio at the same time as PlayStation Link audio.
  • You use or plan to use PlayStation Portal.
  • You prefer a microphone that retracts into the headset.
  • You specifically want a headset built around planar magnetic drivers.

Keep PULSE 3D when these conditions apply

  • You need a 3.5 mm connection for PS VR or mobile devices.
  • You rely on PS5 EQ presets and saveable custom slots.
  • Your main devices are PS5, PS4 or a compatible computer using the adapter.
  • Your current battery routine is acceptable and you do not need Bluetooth mixing.

How do you set up each headset and avoid common connection problems?

The exact on-screen labels can vary with console and system-software updates, but the connection path follows the included wireless technology. Use the headset’s own adapter or Link receiver rather than assuming a generic Bluetooth pairing procedure will work on PS5.

PULSE 3D with PS5 or PS4

  1. Insert the included wireless adapter into a compatible console USB port.
  2. Turn on the headset and wait for the console to recognize the adapter.
  3. Open the console’s audio settings and select the headset as the input and output device if it is not selected automatically.
  4. Use the headset’s volume, mute, game/chat mix and mic-monitoring controls to set your preferred balance.
  5. On PS5, open the available EQ controls and choose one of the three presets or configure one of the three user-saveable slots.

If the console does not detect it, reseat the adapter, try another USB port and confirm that the headset is charged. For a computer, verify that the operating system has selected the adapter as its audio input and output.

  1. Connect the cable to the headset and the PS VR or mobile device.
  2. Select the connected device’s audio output and microphone settings if necessary.
  3. Adjust volume and chat functions on the connected device, because the headset’s built-in controls are not supported in the documented PS VR and mobile wired contexts.

  2. Turn on the headset and complete the Link pairing process indicated by the device.
  3. Choose the headset as the active audio input and output on the console or computer.
  4. Extend the microphone for chat and retract it when you want it stored.
  5. Charge on the supplied hanger or through the headset’s charging connection; mount the hanger only with suitable hardware, since screws and other mounting hardware are not supplied.

PULSE Elite with Bluetooth

  1. Put the headset into Bluetooth pairing mode using the headset controls.
  2. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone or tablet and select the headset.
  3. For simultaneous audio, keep the PlayStation Link connection active while the Bluetooth device is connected.
  4. Set the phone or tablet’s media and call permissions as needed, then adjust volume on the relevant source.

If Bluetooth audio interrupts Link audio, check whether the phone has taken control for a call or notification and confirm that both connections still show as active. Bluetooth behavior can differ between phone operating systems and applications.

What should you know before buying?

  • Battery numbers are not guarantees: “Up to” figures come from PlayStation and are not independent tests.
  • Sound claims are not rankings: planar magnetic drivers and PS5 3D Audio tuning describe different designs, not a proven winner.
  • Wired controls have a limitation: PULSE 3D’s built-in controls are not supported when it is connected by 3.5 mm to PS VR or mobile devices.
  • Compatibility depends on the exact device: the documentation says compatible Windows, macOS, PC and Mac devices rather than every computer.
  • Check model identifiers: PULSE 3D is listed as CFI-ZWH1 and CFI-ZWD1; PULSE Elite is listed as CFI-ZWH2, CFI-ZWA2 and CFI-ZPH2 for PS5 compatibility.
  • Do not assume current value: the available product information does not establish current local prices, stock or which model is the better deal.

Which one should you buy?

Buy PULSE 3D when your priority is PS5-focused simplicity, EQ presets, an adapter that also supports PS4 and compatible computers, or a 3.5 mm connection for PS VR and mobile use. Buy PULSE Elite when you need PlayStation Link across PS5, PC, Mac or Portal, Bluetooth and Link audio together, a retractable microphone, or the longer stated battery life and quick-charge claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is a feature-based choice rather than a universal sound-quality verdict. The official specifications establish what each headset offers, but they do not include the independent measurements needed to say that one is objectively better sounding or more comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can PULSE 3D connect to a phone without Bluetooth?

Yes. Its documented phone option is a 3.5 mm cable connection rather than Bluetooth. When used this way, the headset’s built-in controls are not supported, so use the phone’s controls for volume and related functions.

Can PULSE Elite play my phone audio while I use PS5?

PlayStation describes simultaneous audio from a PlayStation Link device and a Bluetooth device. Pair the phone or tablet over Bluetooth while the headset remains connected to the console through Link; calls or app-specific audio permissions can still change how the mix behaves.

How can I identify which PULSE model I own?

Check the model number printed on the headset or its packaging. PlayStation lists CFI-ZWH1 and CFI-ZWD1 for PULSE 3D, and CFI-ZWH2, CFI-ZWA2 and CFI-ZPH2 for PULSE Elite compatibility with PS5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the PULSE Elite charging hanger include wall screws?

No. The hanger can be mounted or placed on a surface, but additional mounting hardware such as screws is not included. Use hardware appropriate for the wall or surface where you install it.
