PS5 Remote Play streams a game from your own console to your iPad; Xbox Cloud Gaming streams a supported game from Xbox’s cloud service. The PS5 remains the host for Remote Play, so it must be configured, connected and reachable. Xbox Cloud Gaming does not use your personal Xbox console as the game host. On iPad, PlayStation’s route is the PS Remote Play app, while Xbox describes cloud gaming through a browser at Xbox.com/play. These are different ways to play, not two names for the same feature.
There is an important limit to this comparison: the available official sources establish PS5 Remote Play and Xbox Cloud Gaming on iPad, but do not establish current Xbox Remote Play support on iPad. If you mean streaming from your own Xbox console, check Xbox’s current support information rather than treating Cloud Gaming as that feature.

What is the difference between Remote Play and cloud gaming?
The difference is where the game runs. With PS5 Remote Play, your console runs the game and sends its picture and sound to the iPad; your iPad sends your controls back. With Xbox Cloud Gaming, the game session runs on Xbox’s cloud service and streams to the iPad instead.
That distinction determines what you need. Remote Play depends on having access to your own console, while cloud gaming does not use your personal Xbox as the host. Both rely on an internet connection, and neither should be assumed to perform identically on every network or with every controller.

Think of Remote Play as a connection to a device you already have set up, not as a way to install a console game on the iPad. The iPad is the screen and input device for the session; the PS5 or PS4 remains responsible for running the compatible game. Cloud Gaming reverses that dependency: Xbox’s service hosts the session, so the user’s own Xbox is not needed as the host. That does not mean every game is automatically available or that access is unrestricted; catalogue, account, subscription and regional rules still matter and should be checked with Xbox.

The table also shows why one service’s setup advice cannot simply be transferred to the other. Sony’s connection figures, app requirements and controller notes apply to PS Remote Play. Can I play PS5 games on my iPad?
Yes, you can stream compatible games from a PS5 to an iPad using PS Remote Play. You need the console, the app, a PlayStation account, a compatible game and a stable internet connection; Remote Play does not run the game independently on the iPad. PlayStation also supports Remote Play from PS4 consoles, but the same principle applies: the console is the game source.
In practical terms, the console must be more than physically available somewhere in your home: it needs to be configured for Remote Play, connected to the network and reachable when you want to connect. If you expect to start a session while it is in Rest Mode, make sure the relevant network and wake features are enabled. A game must also be compatible with Remote Play; the presence of a title in your console library alone is not a guarantee that every feature or mode will work through a remote session.
What you need before you start
- A PS5 or PS4 configured for Remote Play and connected to the internet.
- The PS Remote Play app on an iPad that meets the app’s current iPadOS requirements. The current App Store listing returned for the app specifies iPadOS 16 or later: PS Remote Play on the App Store.
- A PlayStation account and a game compatible with Remote Play.
- A stable internet connection for both the console and iPad. A compatible controller is useful for games designed around physical controls.
Check the App Store listing on the iPad you plan to use rather than relying only on an older controller compatibility threshold or an old device guide. App availability requirements and controller support are related but distinct: an iPad may meet a controller’s stated software threshold but still fail to meet the app’s current installation requirement.
How to set up PS5 Remote Play
- Enable Remote Play on the console. On PS5, open Settings and enable Remote Play under System > Remote Play. Consult PlayStation’s Remote Play instructions if the labels differ on your console software.
- Prepare the console for remote connection. If you want to connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, enable the network features that allow it to stay connected and be woken for Remote Play. Rest Mode settings and power use are separate from whether the game itself supports Remote Play.
- Install the app and sign in. Get PS Remote Play from the App Store, check that the iPad meets the listed iPadOS requirement, and sign in with the PlayStation account associated with the console.
- Test while near the console. Sony recommends testing the connection close to the console before relying on an away-from-home connection. This helps distinguish setup or local-network problems from issues encountered on another network.
- Connect and start a compatible game. Follow the app’s prompts to find the console, then launch a game that supports Remote Play. The console remains responsible for running the session.
That nearby test is worth doing even if your main goal is to play away from home. It checks that the app, account and console configuration work together before another Wi-Fi network or a mobile carrier becomes part of the connection. If it fails nearby, troubleshoot the local setup first; if it succeeds nearby but not elsewhere, compare the remote network conditions and console availability.
Can I play Xbox games on my iPad?
Xbox describes iPad and other iOS access to Xbox Cloud Gaming through a browser: visit Xbox.com/play and sign in. In this setup, Xbox’s cloud service hosts the game rather than your personal Xbox. A console is therefore not needed as the host, but access still depends on Xbox’s current service rules, supported titles and regional availability.

Xbox Wire’s guide, published December 19, 2025, describes the browser route but does not settle the current subscription, region, iPad/browser or controller eligibility details. Check Xbox’s current information before subscribing or troubleshooting a specific device. Its Apple setup support result is available at Xbox Support’s Apple cloud-gaming setup page; that page may present different regional content, so confirm that its requirements apply to your location.
Do not treat “no console required” as “no other requirements.” It means the personal console is not hosting the game session. You still need to confirm that cloud gaming is available for your account and region, that the particular title is included or otherwise eligible, and that your iPad and browser meet Xbox’s current requirements. Those details can change, so check Xbox’s official information for the location and account you intend to use rather than assuming a general browser instruction answers every eligibility question.
Cloud gaming is not Xbox Remote Play
Cloud Gaming streams a game hosted by Xbox’s service. Remote Play, by contrast, refers to streaming from a player’s own console. The sources cited here establish Xbox Cloud Gaming access on iPad, not whether Xbox Remote Play is currently available on iPad or the requirements for setting it up. If you specifically want to use your own Xbox as the host, look for current Xbox Remote Play instructions rather than assuming the cloud-gaming steps apply.

PlayStation gives 5 Mbps as the baseline connection guidance for Remote Play and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Sony’s mobile guidance frames those figures as upload and download guidance; they are targets, not promises of a particular picture quality, response time or uninterrupted session. See PlayStation’s mobile Remote Play support guide and its Remote Play page.
A speed test is only one part of the picture. The console’s connection, the iPad’s connection, Wi-Fi conditions and the route between them can all affect how responsive the stream feels. A connection that meets the stated baseline can still have interruptions or noticeable control delay; the recommendation should not be read as a latency guarantee.
Because the session travels between the console and iPad, consider both ends of the connection, not just the iPad’s download result. Sony’s mobile guidance discusses upload and download, and a fast result in one direction does not prove that the other side of the route is equally suitable. If the connection is marginal, a nearby test can help you work out whether the issue is in the console’s network, the iPad’s network or the conditions on the route between them.
Do not use the 5 Mbps baseline or 15 Mbps recommendation as a benchmark for Xbox Cloud Gaming. The figures are PlayStation’s guidance for Remote Play, and the cited Xbox material does not establish a corresponding current minimum for iPad cloud play. Nor do the PlayStation figures promise a fixed resolution or a specific level of input responsiveness.

Using mobile data
PlayStation says Remote Play can use mobile data, but carrier and network conditions affect the experience, and play may consume significantly more data than ordinary video streaming. If you are away from Wi-Fi, check your plan’s data allowance and monitor use before a long session. Poor cellular coverage can also make performance inconsistent even when the plan permits data use.
“Can use mobile data” is not the same as “will work equally well on every mobile connection.” Coverage, local network conditions and the amount of available data can all matter. If a session is important, test in the place where you expect to play and keep an eye on usage; the guidance does not provide a fixed data-per-hour figure that would let you predict an exact allowance.
The cited Xbox information does not establish a current minimum connection speed for cloud gaming on iPad. Do not apply PlayStation’s 5 Mbps or 15 Mbps figures to Xbox Cloud Gaming; they are PlayStation guidance for Remote Play.
Do I need a controller to play on iPad?
For PS Remote Play, PlayStation identifies DUALSHOCK 4 and DualSense controller support, but compatibility depends on the iPad’s software version and the controller. Xbox’s cited getting-started guide confirms browser access but does not establish a specific controller list for iPad Cloud Gaming, so check Xbox’s current device guidance before buying a controller for that service.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePlayStation’s compatibility information and the current app listing describe different layers of support. The Remote Play page lists DUALSHOCK 4 support on iOS 14 or later and DualSense Bluetooth support on iOS 14.5 or later, while the App Store listing returned for the app requires iPadOS 16 or later. Meeting an older controller compatibility threshold does not mean the app itself will install on that iPad. Check the current App Store listing for the app requirement, then verify controller support for the precise iPadOS version and controller you plan to use.
A compatible Bluetooth controller is the most straightforward physical-input option for games that expect controller controls. A stand or mount can make longer sessions more comfortable, but it is optional and does not affect service compatibility. Do not assume every controller feature works identically through an iPad app or browser; support can differ by controller, operating system and service.
If you are choosing an accessory, the practical shopping question is compatibility, not whether a stand or mount is required. PlayStation explicitly names DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 support subject to software requirements. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, verify the current service and device guidance before selecting a specific controller; the browser instructions alone do not establish a compatibility list. A controller marketed as a general iPad gaming accessory should not be treated as proof that every button, feature or game will work in both services.

Which option should I choose?
Choose based on what you want to play from and what hardware you already have access to. If your goal is to continue a compatible game from your own PlayStation console, Remote Play is the relevant setup. If you want Xbox Cloud Gaming, use the browser route and confirm Xbox’s current subscription and regional terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no supported price comparison in the information here: it does not establish current Xbox subscription pricing or eligibility, and it does not assign a price to a controller or other accessory. For a cost decision, separate what you already own from what you may need to obtain. PS Remote Play requires access to a configured PlayStation console, while cloud gaming does not use an Xbox console as host; Xbox service access and catalogue rules still need checking. If you need a controller, confirm compatibility before buying, and treat a stand or mount as an optional comfort extra rather than a requirement.
Choose PS5 Remote Play when…
- You own or can use a PS5 or PS4 and want that console to run the game.
- You can leave the console configured, online and available for remote access.
- You want to stream compatible games from that console rather than rely on a cloud-hosted session.
- You can meet PlayStation’s connection guidance and have an iPad and controller combination that meets current compatibility requirements.
Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming when…
- You want the game session hosted by Xbox rather than by your personal console.
- You can access Xbox Cloud Gaming in a supported browser on the iPad.
- You have checked that the service, game and subscription are available for your region and account.
- You have verified current iPad and controller compatibility rather than assuming the requirements for PS Remote Play carry over.
If you mean Xbox Remote Play
Do not substitute Cloud Gaming instructions for Xbox Remote Play instructions. The iPad availability and setup details for Xbox Remote Play are not established by the cited material, so confirm those points directly with Xbox before choosing that route.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check if Remote Play does not connect?
Work from the console outward: confirm the feature is enabled, verify that the console is online and available, then check the iPad app and network. Sony recommends testing close to the console first, which is a useful way to isolate a local setup issue before adding a different network or mobile connection.
- Check the console setting. Confirm Remote Play is enabled on the PS5, and confirm the Rest Mode network options if you expect to connect while the console sleeps.
- Check account and app access. Make sure the app is installed, the iPad meets its current iPadOS requirement, and you have signed in with the account associated with the console.
- Test near the console. If the connection works nearby but not away from home, the remote network or carrier conditions may be the difference.
- Check the connection both ways. Sony’s guidance includes upload and download considerations. A strong download result on the iPad alone does not establish that the console-side connection is suitable.
- Check the game and controller separately. A connection can work while a particular title or controller setup does not behave as expected. Verify that the game is compatible and that the iPadOS, app and controller combination is supported.
For a cloud-gaming problem, do not troubleshoot it as though your own console were offline: the game session is hosted by Xbox’s service. If Xbox Cloud Gaming does not open or a game is unavailable, verify the current Xbox page for region, service eligibility, supported title and browser/device requirements. The cited Xbox getting-started material gives the iPad browser route but not enough detail to diagnose a region-specific or account-specific failure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a PS4 with Remote Play on an iPad?
Yes. PlayStation’s Remote Play information covers PS4 as well as PS5, so the iPad can connect to a supported game running on either console. The console still needs to be configured and reachable.
Will meeting the 15 Mbps recommendation guarantee smooth PS5 Remote Play?
No. PlayStation presents 15 Mbps as a recommendation for a better experience, not a guarantee of low control delay or uninterrupted video. Wi-Fi quality, the console-side connection and mobile carrier conditions can still affect play.
