The best PS5 settings depend on your television or monitor, room acoustics, audio hardware, supported game features, and physical comfort. Start by checking what your display and audio equipment actually support, then compare the available modes from the console menus. The steps below show where to find each control and when changing it is useful.
Start with the PS5 video-output information
PlayStation 5 detects the connected display’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. That automatic choice is the safest starting point; changing a number without checking the television or monitor can create a worse image or an unavailable signal.

- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Review Output Information to see the current resolution, HDR capability, color format and refresh-rate information reported by the display.
- Inspect the adjustable options in the same menu. Only choose a resolution, HDR mode, RGB range or refresh-rate option that your display supports and that looks correct on screen.
- Use the display’s own picture menu to check its input mode, HDR setting and firmware. Television menus differ, so follow the on-screen guidance for that model.
There is no universal HDR, RGB-range or refresh-rate value that improves every television. A setting that is correct for one panel can make another look washed out, crushed in the shadows or unable to display a signal. Compare the automatic setting with any supported alternative while viewing the same game scene, especially a dark area and a bright highlight.
When a high-resolution signal does not appear
- Connect the PS5 directly to the television or monitor rather than routing it through an unverified switch, receiver or capture device.
- Confirm that the display is on the HDMI input used by the console.
- Install available firmware for the display.
- Try another HDMI cable if picture or sound problems continue. This is a troubleshooting step, not a reason to buy an expensive cable by default.
Menu names can change with PS5 system software updates. If a label differs slightly, use the closest Screen and Video or Video Output entry shown on your console.
#1 Best Overall
- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Use accessibility settings to improve legibility and control
Accessibility tools can change how clearly you see menus and games, not just how the console speaks. Open Settings > Accessibility and adjust one option at a time so you can tell which change helps.
| Option | What it changes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Color correction | Adjusts color presentation for different color-vision needs. | Check the result in each game; color design varies by title. |
| Text size and bold text | Makes system text easier to read from your normal seating distance. | Game menus may use their own text settings. |
| High contrast | Increases separation between interface elements. | Some games provide separate contrast controls. |
| Reduce motion | Limits selected movement effects in the system interface. | It does not guarantee that every game’s camera or animation will change. |
| Zoom | Magnifies part of the screen for reading small details. | Useful for menus; it can obscure surrounding information while active. |
| Color inversion | Reverses displayed colors. | Color inversion turns HDR off. |
| Captions and screen reader | Adds text or spoken navigation for supported system content. | Individual games control their own subtitle and narration features. |
| Mono audio | Combines left and right channels. | It can make dialogue or effects easier to hear when stereo separation is difficult. |
Because color inversion disables HDR, treat it as a deliberate accessibility trade-off rather than a picture-quality upgrade. If HDR is important for a particular game, compare the normal display with another accessibility combination such as larger text, bold text or high contrast.
Choose TV-speaker 3D audio by measuring your room
For built-in television speakers, use Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV). The PS5 asks you to measure from your normal seating position. Sit where you usually play, follow the measurement prompts and then compare stereo with 3D audio using familiar game scenes.

- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
- Place the television in its usual position and clear objects that block its speakers.
- Sit in your normal play position, not beside the television or directly in front of a different speaker.
- Run the 3D-audio measurement in the TV 3D Audio menu.
- Listen to the same game or video in stereo and 3D modes.
- Keep the mode that gives you clearer dialogue, more convincing direction or greater comfort on your setup.
Room layout matters. If you move the television, change your seat, rearrange furniture or alter major reflective surfaces, measure again. If 3D audio is hard to hear, remove obstructions from the TV speakers and turn off the television’s own sound-processing effects; overlapping processing can make the result less obvious. Stereo may remain the better choice if it sounds clearer to you.
Personalize 3D audio for headphones
With headphones connected, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones). You can create a personalized profile by responding to sounds presented from different positions and angles, or select one of five presets.
| Headphone choice | Best way to evaluate it | Decision point |
|---|---|---|
| Personalized profile | Complete the listening prompts while wearing the headphones in your normal position. | Use it if the profile sounds natural and directional effects remain easy to place. |
| One of five presets | Switch presets with the same game scene or voice-chat sample. | Choose the preset that keeps speech clear without making effects tiring. |
| 3D audio off | Compare directly with the processed modes. | Some listeners prefer the unprocessed stereo presentation. |
Do not judge a profile from a single dramatic scene. Test dialogue, quiet environmental sounds and a busy combat sequence, then compare with 3D audio disabled. Headphone fit, ear shape and the game’s own mix all influence the result.

Audio Focus for quieter details
Sony describes Audio Focus as emphasizing quieter sounds in selected frequency ranges while using headphones. It is intended for games, voice chat and media. Availability and the detailed controls can vary, so treat it as an optional setting to explore rather than a guaranteed improvement. Toggle it during a section with quiet dialogue or ambient effects and keep it only if those sounds become easier to follow without making louder effects uncomfortable.
Use Dolby Atmos only with compatible HDMI equipment
If you already use a compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled soundbar, television or home-theater system over HDMI, select Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority) > Dolby Atmos. A PlayStation Blog announcement dated September 13, 2023, explains that Tempest 3D AudioTech can render to compatible Dolby Atmos HDMI devices.
This option depends on the equipment chain: the HDMI device, the television’s audio path and any receiver in between must support the format. It is not required for changing PS5 audio, and it does not make ordinary TV speakers behave like a compatible Atmos system. If the output becomes silent or changes unexpectedly, return to Audio Format (Priority), select the format your equipment supports and verify the device’s own input and firmware settings.

Adjust DualSense feedback for comfort
Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General). The menu includes controller speaker volume, vibration intensity, trigger-effect intensity, indicator brightness, communication method and press-and-hold delay.
| Control | Lower or disable it when… | Keep it higher when… |
|---|---|---|
| Vibration intensity | Rumbling distracts you, causes fatigue or makes fine control uncomfortable. | You use haptics as an important cue and it remains comfortable. |
| Trigger-effect intensity | Adaptive resistance makes repeated actions tiring or painful. | You want supported games to convey tension or resistance through the triggers. |
| Controller speaker volume | Audio from the controller is startling or competes with your main speakers. | You rely on controller sound for prompts or nearby effects. |
| Indicator brightness | Light from the controller is distracting in a dark room. | You need a brighter status indication. |
| Press-and-hold delay | Holding a button is difficult or slow to register comfortably. | You prefer the default timing for deliberate long presses. |
Trigger effects work only in games that support them. Lowering them is therefore a comfort decision, not a universal performance rule. You can also set custom button assignments under the PS5 accessibility controls when a particular grip or movement is difficult. Haptic feedback for console navigation is a separate accessibility option; it applies to console navigation and is available for DualSense, DualSense Edge and PS VR2 Sense controllers.
Health warning for vibration and trigger effects
The PlayStation 5 CFI-21XX Instruction Manual states: Do not use the vibration or trigger effect function if you have any ailment or injury to body parts such as the bones, joints, or muscles of the hand or arm or that may be affected by this vibration function.
The manual says these features can be disabled under Settings > Accessories. Stop using a feature that causes pain and seek medical advice for an injury rather than trying to compensate with a stronger or weaker setting.

A practical comparison routine
Changing several options at once makes it impossible to know what helped. Use this short routine after connecting the PS5 to a new display or audio setup:
- Write down the current Video Output and audio choices.
- Test one picture option with the same game scene, then return to the previous value if the image loses detail or the display reports an unsupported signal.
- For TV speakers, measure 3D audio from your seat and compare it with stereo.
- For headphones, compare the personalized profile, a preset and 3D audio off using dialogue and effects.
- Set vibration and trigger effects to the lowest comfortable level, then raise them only if you genuinely prefer the extra feedback.
- Recheck after moving the display, seat, furniture or audio equipment.
Use these decision axes when two choices both work: supported output and HDR compatibility for picture; stereo versus 3D, measured profile versus preset and actual listening preference for audio; and feedback strength, game support and physical comfort for the controller.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- No picture or an unsupported signal: return to automatic output, connect directly to the display, select the correct HDMI input, check display firmware and try another HDMI cable.
- HDR looks wrong: confirm the display supports HDR, review its own HDR/input mode and check whether color inversion is enabled, since inversion turns HDR off.
- 3D TV audio is unclear: remeasure from the normal seat, clear speaker obstructions and disable the television’s extra sound effects.
- Headphone audio feels artificial: compare the personalized profile, all five presets and 3D audio off.
- Controller feedback hurts or distracts: lower vibration and trigger intensity or disable both under Controller (General); use custom button assignments if a different control layout reduces strain.
- Dolby Atmos produces no sound: verify every HDMI device supports the format, then select the format your equipment actually accepts.
Bottom line
Begin with the PS5’s detected output, use accessibility tools for legibility, measure 3D audio from your real seating position, compare headphone profiles with stereo, and tune DualSense feedback around comfort rather than a supposed universal advantage. The right settings are the ones your display, room, games, ears and hands can support consistently.
