Choose the Digital Edition if you expect to download your games; supported Digital Edition models can take Sony’s separately attached disc drive later. For extra storage that can run PS5 games, add a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD. A USB drive can hold PS5 game installations for later, but those games must be copied back before you can play them.
PS5 Slim Disc or Digital: which edition should you buy?
The key difference is the disc drive, not how you expand storage. The Disc Edition has a built-in drive, making it the straightforward choice if you want physical PS5 games. The Digital Edition is suited to a downloaded library, though select model groups support a separately purchased drive.
| Decision | Disc Edition | Digital Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Physical games | Built-in disc drive. | No built-in drive; a compatible add-on drive is supported on CFI-2000/7000 model groups. |
| Adding a drive later | Not needed for disc games. | Possible on supported model groups; internet is required to pair the drive during first setup. |
| Listed internal SSD capacity | 1 TB for the PS5 console in Sony’s CFI-21XX manual. | 825 GB for the Digital Edition in Sony’s CFI-21XX manual. |
| Expansion options | M.2 SSD for playable PS5 game storage; USB extended storage for archiving. | M.2 SSD for playable PS5 game storage; USB extended storage for archiving. |
The capacity figures come from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2025 CFI-21XX instruction manual. They are nominal capacities, and some space is reserved for system administration, maintenance, and additional options. Check the model number on the specific console before buying a detachable drive or promising compatibility; the cited manual covers CFI-21XX models.
Local prices and bundles can change, and the cited specifications do not establish which edition is the better value in every market. Compare the actual price and included storage where you plan to buy, alongside whether you need discs now or might want that option later.

Can you add a disc drive to the PS5 Slim Digital Edition later?
Yes, if the console belongs to a supported CFI-2000/7000 model group. Sony’s disc-drive setup guidance says the detachable drive must be paired with an internet connection during initial setup. Confirm the console’s model number before purchasing the drive; do not assume every console sold as a PS5 Slim Digital Edition has the same compatibility.
What SSD works with PS5 Slim?
For added storage that can download, update, and launch PS5 games, choose an M.2 NVMe SSD that meets PlayStation’s compatibility and physical-fit requirements. Sony’s M.2 installation guidance specifies:
Rank #2
- Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, Key M. M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported.
- Capacity: 250 GB to 8 TB.
- Supported form factors: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110.
- Maximum width: 25 mm.
- Maximum length: 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm, depending on form factor.
- Maximum thickness: 11.25 mm including cooling—up to 8.0 mm above the board and 2.45 mm below it.
- Read speed: Sony recommends sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster.
- Cooling: A heat-dissipation structure, such as a heatsink or heat-transfer sheet, is required.
Check the dimensions of the complete drive assembly, including its cooling structure, not just the bare SSD. Sony says it cannot guarantee every third-party drive that meets the listed specifications. And a higher advertised read speed does not guarantee that every game will perform like it does on the console’s internal SSD; Sony cautions that game performance may vary.
What to expect when installing an M.2 SSD
Use a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver. The console formats the drive for first use, erasing any data already on it, so back up anything you need before installation. Follow Sony’s installation instructions for your console model.

Can a USB drive store and play PS5 games?
USB extended storage is useful for keeping compatible game installations without using the console’s internal SSD, but it is archive storage for PS5 games—not a place to launch them from. To play a PS5 title stored on USB, copy it back to console storage or an M.2 SSD first. An M.2 SSD can store, download, update, and launch PS5 games. See PlayStation’s USB extended storage guidance for supported use and setup.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
Which storage option fits your need?
- You need more room to play PS5 games directly: Add a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD, checking capacity, interface, form factor, and heatsink dimensions.
- You want to keep PS5 installations but can wait to copy them back before playing: Use USB extended storage.
- You are deciding between console editions: Choose based on your need for a built-in disc drive, whether you may add the drive later on a supported model, and the specific console’s listed capacity and local bundle.
