Both the PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro will run GTA VI. Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 as a launch platform, and Sony’s store identifies the game as both a standard PS5 release and a “PS5 Pro Enhanced” title. Buy the PS5 Slim if you want the least expensive, straightforward way to play. Choose the PS5 Pro if sharper image quality, ray-traced effects, a larger internal drive and display headroom matter enough to justify its premium. GTA VI does not require the Pro, and the official listings do not yet disclose its exact resolution or frame-rate modes.
What the official listings confirm
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It currently gives November 19, 2026 as the coming date and describes the game as “Plays Best On PlayStation 5.” That platform wording covers the PS5 family, so the compact Slim and the higher-spec Pro are both valid consoles for GTA VI.

Sony’s PlayStation Store lists two versions of the game: PS5 Standard Edition and PS5 Pro Enhanced. The US standard-edition price is $79.99, and the store lists a November 19, 2026 release timestamp of 05:00 UTC. The Pro label confirms that the game has a mode or optimization intended for Sony’s upgraded console, but it does not by itself reveal the resolution, frame-rate target or which effects are enabled.

Those details matter because a Pro badge is not a promise that every scene will run at a particular frame rate. Until Rockstar publishes technical notes or independent testing is available, the safe conclusion is compatibility for both systems and additional image-quality headroom on the Pro—not a guaranteed performance number.

Will GTA 6 run on PS5 Slim?
Yes. GTA VI is announced for PlayStation 5, and the Slim is the standard compact version of that platform. Nothing in Rockstar’s announcement requires the Pro model. A Slim owner will be buying the same console generation for which the game is listed, rather than a downgraded or unsupported edition.
The Slim is therefore the sensible baseline for someone whose main question is simply, “Can I play GTA VI?” It also makes sense if your television is a conventional 4K set without a 120Hz mode, if you are not planning to replace that display, or if you would rather put the difference toward games and accessories. The official pages do not promise a special Slim frame-rate setting, but they also do not identify the Slim as excluded from any announced release.
Disc or digital Slim?
Sony presents the slimmer PS5 in both disc and digital configurations. Choose the disc version if you regularly buy boxed games, borrow or resell discs, or want a physical copy of GTA VI. Choose the digital configuration if your library is downloaded and you are comfortable buying through the PlayStation Store. Neither choice changes the fact that GTA VI is a PS5 game; it changes how you obtain and manage it.
What the PS5 Pro adds for GTA VI
Sony’s Pro announcement identifies three relevant hardware and rendering advantages: an upgraded GPU, more advanced ray tracing and AI-driven PSSR upscaling. It also specifies a 2TB internal SSD. In practical buying terms, the Pro is designed to give developers more room to pursue higher image quality or more demanding effects while maintaining their chosen performance target.
GTA VI is officially marked “PS5 Pro Enhanced,” so Rockstar has identified the title as benefiting from that hardware. The label is useful, but limited. The cited Rockstar and PlayStation pages do not say whether the Pro version uses a native resolution increase, a different performance mode, stronger ray-traced effects, a steadier frame rate, or some combination of those options. Do not buy the console on the assumption that one particular mode has already been confirmed.
When the Pro’s hardware is easier to see
The upgrade is most relevant with a 4K/120Hz display, where additional rendering headroom can be visible in fine geometry, reflections, lighting and motion. A large screen viewed from a normal seating distance can also make image-quality differences easier to notice than a small television. These are use-case considerations, not a guarantee of a particular GTA VI output mode.
On a basic 4K television, the Pro may still provide a cleaner image if Rockstar uses its hardware well, but the benefit is harder to predict without an announced technical specification. If your display is 1080p or you sit far from the screen, spending more for improvements you may not see is difficult to justify unless storage or future games are equally important.

Does GTA 6 need PS5 Pro?
No. “PS5 Pro Enhanced” means the game has Pro-specific support; it does not mean the standard PS5 models are inadequate or incompatible. Rockstar’s platform listing names PlayStation 5 without restricting the release to the Pro.
The practical distinction is access versus refinement:
- Access: both consoles are announced PlayStation 5 systems for GTA VI.
- Refinement: the Pro has hardware intended for more ambitious graphics and is the only model with the official Pro Enhanced designation.
- Certainty: neither official listing publishes a GTA VI frame-rate target or resolution mode yet.
If you only need a console that plays the game, the Slim meets the requirement. If you are choosing between two new consoles and place a high value on visual quality, the Pro is the higher-ceiling option, not a mandatory one.
Storage: the Pro’s clearest built-in advantage
The Pro includes a 2TB SSD, a figure Sony Interactive Entertainment specified in its 2024 announcement. The cited material does not give a comparable Slim capacity, so it would be misleading to assign the Slim a number here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStorage matters because a modern game library can include several large installations, patches and optional content. A larger internal drive means fewer uninstall-and-reinstall decisions, especially if GTA VI shares the console with other frequently played games. It does not change GTA VI’s graphics or compatibility; it changes how much you can keep installed at once.
For a player who buys mostly physical games, internal storage still matters because disc installations normally occupy drive space. For an all-digital buyer, the impact is more obvious because every installed game is downloaded. If you rarely keep more than a few games installed, the Pro’s storage advantage may not repay its price premium by itself.
Price, bundles and regional value
Sony announced a $699.99 US recommended retail price for the PS5 Pro at launch in 2024. That is a US launch RRP, not a universal 2026 street price. The Slim has no single prevailing price in the supplied official material, and real purchase costs depend on country, disc or digital configuration, retailer inventory, temporary promotions and bundles.
| Cost question | What is established | What you must verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| GTA VI software | US standard edition is $79.99 on Sony’s 2026 store listing. | Your country’s currency, taxes, edition and any local pricing changes. |
| PS5 Slim | No single current price is established in the cited material. | Disc versus digital model, bundle contents, retailer warranty and stock. |
| PS5 Pro | $699.99 US launch RRP announced in 2024. | Current regional price, included accessories, discounts and availability. |
| GTA VI Pro features | Officially marked PS5 Pro Enhanced. | Rockstar’s later technical notes or independent testing for actual modes. |
Compare complete packages rather than headline prices. A Slim bundle that includes a game or an extra controller can change the value calculation, as can a Pro discount in your market. Check the listing for the exact console configuration, whether a disc drive is included, and the retailer’s return terms.
Who should buy the PS5 Slim?
Choose the Slim for the lowest-cost route into GTA VI
If GTA VI is the main reason you need a PS5, the Slim is the straightforward choice. It gives you the announced PlayStation 5 platform without paying for Pro-specific graphics hardware that the game’s published pages have not yet quantified.
Choose the Slim if your display will stay the same
A 4K television that you do not plan to replace, especially one without 120Hz support, reduces the likelihood that you will benefit fully from additional rendering headroom. The Slim remains capable of displaying the game on that screen.
Choose the Slim if you prefer physical games
Sony offers the compact model in a disc configuration. That option suits players who collect boxed releases, trade games or share discs within a household. Select the digital configuration only if an online-only library fits your buying habits.
Who should buy the PS5 Pro?
Choose the Pro for image quality first
The Pro is aimed at players who notice differences in sharpness, reflections, lighting and other demanding effects and who have a display capable of showing them. GTA VI’s Pro Enhanced status makes it a reasonable candidate for that audience, even though the exact implementation is not public.
Choose the Pro if you want more internal space
The built-in 2TB SSD can be valuable if you keep a large installed library and want to avoid managing storage immediately. Treat this as a convenience and capacity decision, separate from GTA VI’s compatibility.
Choose the Pro if you accept an uncertain launch benefit
Buying the Pro for GTA VI means paying for potential visual advantages before Rockstar has published mode details. You are buying Sony’s broader hardware capability and the confirmed Pro Enhanced support, not a published promise of a specific resolution or frame rate.
Should an existing PS5 owner upgrade?
Usually, wait for more information if GTA VI is the only reason to replace a working PS5. The official pages confirm Pro enhancement, but they do not state a frame-rate target, resolution mode or the visual features that will differ. Those omissions make it impossible to calculate a precise upgrade benefit from the current listings alone.
An upgrade becomes easier to justify when several factors apply at once: you own a 4K/120Hz display, you care strongly about image quality, you want the larger internal drive, and you are comfortable paying the Pro premium even if the eventual GTA VI modes are conservative. If none of those describes you, keep the existing PS5 and evaluate Rockstar’s technical notes or independent tests closer to release.

- Confirm your country’s GTA VI listing. Check the local PlayStation Store for the edition, currency, tax treatment and release information. The $79.99 figure cited above is US pricing only.
- Identify your display. Note whether it is 4K, whether it supports 120Hz, and how large it is at your normal viewing distance.
- Decide how you buy games. Select a Slim disc configuration if physical media is important; choose a digital console only when downloads suit your library.
- Estimate your storage habits. If you keep many large games installed, the Pro’s larger internal SSD has practical value; otherwise, storage may not be decisive.
- Set a hard console budget. Compare current regional Slim and Pro prices, bundle contents and stock rather than relying on a launch RRP from another market or year.
- Separate confirmed facts from expectations. Treat “PS5 Pro Enhanced” as confirmed support, but wait for a published mode description before assuming a particular resolution or frame rate.
- Reassess if you already own a PS5. Do not upgrade solely on speculation; use later technical documentation or testing to decide whether the visible difference justifies replacement.
Bottom-line decision
Buy the PS5 Slim if your priority is simply playing GTA VI on PlayStation 5 at the lowest prevailing cost, especially with a display you do not plan to upgrade. Buy the PS5 Pro if you have a 4K/120Hz setup, value sharper graphics and ray-traced effects, want the larger internal SSD, and accept paying more for benefits whose exact GTA VI implementation has not been published. GTA VI supports both consoles; the Pro is an enhancement option, not a requirement.
