No. The PS5 versions of the Star Wars PlayStation Classics do not support original PS1 memory cards or original DualShock/Dual Analog controllers. Sony sells these as new digital PS4/PS5 conversions, not as disc playback. Your progress is stored as modern PS4/PS5 save data, with emulator quick-save features and optional PlayStation Plus cloud sync. Use a DualSense controller; a DualShock 4 is officially supported when you launch the PS4 version of a dual-listed classic.
The phrase “PS5 Star Wars Classics” describes games in Sony’s Classics Catalog and PlayStation Store, not a boxed product. Availability and catalog membership vary by region.

These are digital conversions of older Star Wars games for newer PlayStation hardware. PS1, PS2 and PSP Classics download to the console and run locally through Sony’s emulator technology. PS3 entries in the Classics Catalog stream from Sony’s servers instead of installing as local PS3 software.
The PS1 conversions add features that were not present on the original discs, including higher-resolution rendering, rewind, quick save and selectable video filters. Sony warns that a conversion can behave differently from the original PlayStation release because of those additions.

“This version does not support the PlayStation® console’s peripherals, therefore some functionality may not be available.”
That statement appears on the PlayStation Store pages for both STAR WARS Episode I – The Phantom Menace and STAR WARS Rebel Assault II – The Hidden Empire. “Peripherals” covers the original controller and memory-card hardware.
PS1 Star Wars games on the service
- STAR WARS Episode I – The Phantom Menace — PlayStation Store release 16 January 2024. The US store listing showed a 4.19-star average from 1,928 ratings on 29 October 2026. PlayStation LifeStyle reported a $4.99 standalone price and 21 trophies, including a Platinum, added roughly two years after launch.
- STAR WARS Rebel Assault II – The Hidden Empire — PlayStation Store release 16 April 2024. Its US listing showed a 3.76-star average from 812 ratings. Destructoid listed the standalone price at $4.99 in November 2024.
- Star Wars: Demolition — listed as a PS1 Classic at $4.99 by Destructoid in November 2024 and present on Thumbsticks’ Canada Premium list dated 24 October 2026.
Other Star Wars entries in the Premium catalog
The same Canada list includes the PS2 Classics Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It also lists the PS3 streaming titles Star Wars: The Force Unleashed – Ultimate Sith Edition, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga and LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars. Thumbsticks counted more than 400 PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games in Canada’s Classics Catalog on 24 October 2026, but individual games can differ by country.
Can you transfer an original PS1 memory-card save to PS5?
No supported transfer path exists. A PS5 has no PlayStation memory-card slot, and Sony’s PS5 hardware documentation lists USB-A, USB-C and networking connections rather than the proprietary card interface used by the original PlayStation.

The conversion’s original in-game save points still work, but the resulting files are PS4/PS5 save data held on the console. They are not files written to, or readable from, a gray PS1 memory card. PlayStation Plus cloud storage can synchronize those modern saves between compatible consoles; it does not import a 1990s memory-card file.
What replaces the memory card?
- Quick save: Open the conversion’s in-game menu or control-center overlay to create a save state at a convenient point.
- Rewind: Reverse recent gameplay when a mistake or failed jump would otherwise force you back to the last in-game save.
- Normal saves: Use the game’s original save points when you want the traditional progression system. The data is stored in the modern console save area.
- Cloud backup: PlayStation Plus cloud storage can back up the modern save file, subject to the account’s current cloud-storage and subscription rules.
Sony has not published an import utility, file-format specification or compatibility percentage for original PS1 memory-card saves with these conversions. A USB card reader or a copied memory-card image should therefore not be treated as an officially supported solution.

GamesHub reported in January 2025 that some PS1, PS2 and PSP games bought through the older PlayStation Network can qualify an account to redeem a later PS4/PS5 conversion without another charge. That is account-license matching, not save migration. It may give you access to the newer edition, but it does not move the old memory-card data into its save system.
Do original DualShock controllers work on PS5 Star Wars Classics?
No. The original PlayStation DualShock and Dual Analog pads use the proprietary PS1/PS2 controller connector, while PS5 supports Bluetooth and USB-A/USB-C accessories. Sony’s conversion disclaimer excludes the original PlayStation console’s peripherals, so an original SCPH-1200-era pad is not an official controller for these games.

Use a DualSense for the PS5 version
The DualSense wireless controller is the default choice because the conversions are listed for both PS4 and PS5 and every PS5 includes one DualSense. Sony’s PS5 FAQ says PS5 games require DualSense because they are designed around that controller’s newer features. The classic’s controls are mapped to the DualSense’s standard buttons and sticks; the conversion’s extra menu is opened through the PS5 interface.
When can you use a DualShock 4?
Sony’s FAQ states that PS4 games played on PS5 support either DualShock 4 or DualSense. Therefore, if the store offers separate PS4 and PS5 versions and you launch the PS4 SKU, a DualShock 4 is an official option. Treat DualSense as the safe default for the PS5 SKU itself; the specific behavior of a DualShock 4 when a player selects the PS5 SKU has not been independently established here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat about third-party adapters?
Some USB adapters claim to connect original PlayStation pads to modern consoles, but their behavior with these particular Star Wars conversions has not been verified. Sony does not list an adapter-based compatibility guarantee. The 8BitDo Retro Receiver for PlayStation is designed for the opposite direction—using a modern controller on original PS1 or PS2 hardware—so it does not make an original DualShock an official PS5 peripheral.
Does a PS5 play the original Star Wars PS1 disc?
No. A disc-edition PS5 uses an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive for supported PS5 and PS4 discs; it does not read PlayStation CD-ROM software. Inserting an original Star Wars PS1 disc will not launch the old executable or unlock the digital Classic.

TechWiser’s September 2026 backward-compatibility guide, Everyeye’s April 2024 coverage, Sportskeeda’s August 2023 guide and PSko.cz’s August 2026 explanation all describe this hardware limitation. PSko.cz also distinguishes ownership of the original disc from ownership of the separately sold digital conversion. The physical disc remains useful with original PlayStation hardware, but it is not a PS5 license.
How do you play a Star Wars Classic on PS5?
You need a PS5, a compatible DualSense (or DualShock 4 for the PS4 SKU), and either an active PlayStation Plus Premium entitlement or a standalone purchase. In some markets Sony uses the name Deluxe for the comparable top tier.
- Choose access: Open the PlayStation Plus hub and browse the Classics Catalog if you have Premium, or find the game directly in the PlayStation Store to buy it.
- Install or stream: Download PS1 and PS2 Classics to the PS5. Select the stream option for PS3 catalog games; those do not download as local PS3 software.
- Launch with the right controller: Use DualSense for the PS5 edition. Use DualShock 4 only when launching the PS4 edition of a dual-listed game.
- Open the conversion menu: Use the on-screen game menu or control-center options to access quick save, rewind, video filters and rendering choices. The exact feature set varies by title.
- Manage your license: Keep Premium active if the game is being played through the catalog. A standalone purchase remains in your library after the subscription ends.
Is PlayStation Plus Premium required?
Premium is required for catalog access, but it is not the only way to play the downloadable PS1 conversions. Buying a title separately removes the subscription requirement for that game.
| Route | What you get | Price information | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Premium catalog | Eligible PS1, PS2, PSP downloads and PS3 streaming games | $159.99 per year reported by SlashGear in 2025 | Catalog access ends when the entitlement ends; regional lineups vary |
| Italy Premium pricing | Same top-tier catalog concept | €16.99 monthly, €49.99 quarterly or €151.99 annually, reported by Everyeye in 2024 | Prices are region-specific and can change |
| Standalone PS1 purchase | One downloadable conversion | Commonly $4.99 for the three PS1 Star Wars titles in US listings; standalone PS1 Classics generally reported at $4.99–$9.99 | Purchase remains in the account library; store price can change |
GamesHub reported Australian standalone Classics at roughly AUD $5.99–$14.95 in 2025. Check the live store page for your account region before paying because prices, taxes, catalog membership and promotional discounts move independently.

What changes compared with original hardware?
| Feature | Original PlayStation setup | PS5 conversion |
|---|---|---|
| Game format | Physical CD-ROM and original executable | Digital PS4/PS5 conversion |
| Controller | Original DualShock or Dual Analog pad | DualSense; DualShock 4 for the PS4 SKU |
| Save medium | Removable PS1 memory card | Modern PS4/PS5 save storage and optional cloud sync |
| Recovery tools | In-game save points only | Original saves plus title-dependent quick save and rewind |
| Display | Original console output | Possible up-rendering and custom video filters |
| Ownership | Disc ownership | Premium entitlement or separate digital license |
The conversion is convenient, but it is not a hardware emulation bridge for every original accessory. If authentic controller feel, physical media or a memory-card collection is the priority, original PlayStation hardware remains the appropriate setup. If convenience, quick saves and current-console display options matter more, the PS5 edition is the practical route.
What should you do if your old progress matters?
Plan on starting a new modern save unless the game is already available on the same account with a supported modern save. Before abandoning the original system, record passwords, chapter positions or other in-game progress manually. Do not erase the memory card while assuming a future PS5 transfer will become available.

- Use the conversion’s quick-save menu regularly, especially before difficult sections.
- Enable cloud synchronization if you subscribe to a plan that includes it and want console-to-console backup.
- Keep the original console, disc and memory card if you want to continue the untouched 1990s version.
- Check the current store listing for regional availability, price and any newly added trophies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an original PS1 memory card be backed up to a USB drive for these games?
Sony does not document a supported export or import format for these conversions. A USB backup of a raw card image would not automatically become a PS4/PS5 save, so treat the card as an original-hardware backup only.
Will a PS1 save automatically unlock trophies in the PS5 version?
There is no general Sony promise that legacy progress triggers trophies. The Phantom Menace received 21 trophies, including a Platinum, in a later update, but trophy behavior is title-specific and should be checked on that game’s current store listing.
Are all Star Wars games in the Classics Catalog downloadable?
No. The PS1 and PS2 entries download locally, while the listed PS3 Star Wars games stream. A title’s platform label in the catalog determines which option appears in your region.
Can I keep playing a downloaded Classic after Premium expires?
A catalog download remains tied to the active Premium entitlement, so access stops when that entitlement ends. Buying the conversion separately is the route to retaining that individual game without the subscription.
