For PS5 games you want to play without moving them first, choose a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD. PS5 games can be stored on USB extended storage, but Sony requires you to move them back to console storage or M.2 storage before playing. USB is the more convenient choice for playing PS4 games directly, keeping a removable library, or archiving PS5 games so you do not have to download them again. If you want both an active PS5 library and a larger archive, using both is a practical setup.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
M.2 NVMe SSD Playing PS5 games directly from expanded storage PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe; 250 GB–8 TB; Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s sequential read or faster PS5 Nov 2026
USB extended storage Playing PS4 games directly; removable storage and PS5-game archives SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later; 250 GB–8 TB PS5 Nov 2026

The table captures the decisive distinction, but the best purchase depends on how you use your console. A USB drive is not a slower substitute for an M.2 expansion when the goal is launching PS5 games. Conversely, an M.2 drive is not automatically the most convenient answer if you primarily want an easily removable PS4 library or a holding place for games you play only occasionally.

Is an M.2 SSD better than USB extended storage on PS5?

For an active library of PS5 games, yes: compatible M.2 storage lets you launch, download, and update PS5 games directly. USB extended storage can hold PS5 games, but you must copy a game to console storage or an M.2 SSD before launching it. For PS4 games, USB has an advantage: you can play them directly from the drive.

That difference matters more than whether a drive is an SSD or a hard drive. A fast external USB SSD still does not become a place to launch PS5 games from; the restriction is about USB extended storage, not just drive speed. Pick based on how you want to access games, then check that the drive meets Sony’s compatibility requirements.

What “direct play” means in practice

Direct play means the game remains on the expansion drive while you select it from the PS5 interface, launch it, and use the drive as its active installation location. M.2 storage supports that workflow for PS5 and PS4 games. USB extended storage supports it for PS4 games, but not for PS5 games. A PS5 title on USB is available to keep, not to launch from.

This distinction also affects updates and downloads. A compatible M.2 drive can be the destination for downloading and updating PS5 games. A USB drive can retain a PS5 installation, but you should expect to move that installation to console storage or M.2 storage when it becomes part of your active rotation.

Can I play PS5 games from an external hard drive?

You can store PS5 games on USB extended storage, but you cannot play them directly from that location. To play one, move it to the PS5’s console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD first.

This makes USB useful as an archive rather than an active PS5-game drive. An archived game can remain available to move back when you want it, which can save you from downloading it again. The trade-off is the transfer step: each time you want to play a title that is still on USB, you need to move it back before launching.

If you mostly play a small set of PS5 games and rotate through others occasionally, USB can still be a sensible way to keep more titles on hand. If you often switch among many PS5 games, an M.2 SSD avoids the repeated copy-back step.

When USB archiving is worthwhile

USB archiving is most useful when your internet connection, download allowance, or available console space makes redownloading inconvenient. You can leave less frequently played PS5 titles on the external drive and copy them back only when they return to your rotation. The drive therefore acts as a library shelf rather than a second PS5 game partition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That approach works best when you accept the extra management step. Before a gaming session, a title stored on USB may need to be moved; after finishing it, another title can be moved out to make room. If your routine involves changing games often, those repeated moves are the main reason to prioritize M.2 capacity instead.

Can I play PS4 games from USB storage on PS5?

Yes. Sony says PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage on PS5. That makes USB a useful option if a large part of your library is PS4 games, or if you want to leave those games on external storage while keeping internal and M.2 space available for PS5 titles.

M.2 storage can also hold and play PS4 games, so the choice is not about whether PS4 games work on M.2. It is about which drive makes the most sense for your library: USB gives you direct PS4 play and easy removal; M.2 gives you direct play for both PS4 and PS5 games from the installed expansion drive.

A mixed-generation library is a strong argument for using both. Put PS4 titles on USB for direct play and reserve M.2 space for PS5 games that cannot run from USB. Alternatively, put frequently played games of either generation on M.2 and keep the USB drive for older or occasional titles.

What does each option require?

Sony’s current PlayStation support requirements, as of 2026, set different compatibility checks for USB extended storage and M.2 drives. USB has fewer physical installation checks; M.2 requires matching the interface, dimensions, and cooling requirements as well as capacity.

USB extended storage requirements

  • Use a SuperSpeed USB drive rated at 5 Gbps or later.
  • Capacity must be at least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB.
  • Connect the drive directly to the PS5; Sony does not support connecting it through a USB hub.
  • Only one USB extended-storage drive can be in use at a time. You can use multiple drives, but not simultaneously as extended storage.
  • Sony warns that it does not guarantee every USB storage device will work with PS5.

Sony’s cited port guidance lists SuperSpeed USB ports rated at 10 Gbps, while the extended-storage requirements accept drives rated at 5 Gbps or later. The practical point is to use a compatible SuperSpeed drive and connect it directly to a supported SuperSpeed port, rather than assuming a hub or any USB connection will work.

M.2 SSD requirements

  • Use an M.2 NVMe SSD with a PCIe Gen4x4 interface and an M key. M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported.
  • Capacity must be from 250 GB through 8 TB.
  • Supported form factors are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110.
  • Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster.
  • The SSD needs effective heat dissipation, using a built-in heatsink or a compatible cooling structure such as a heatsink and thermal transfer sheet.
  • Sony says HMB-supported devices are not supported.

Check the full drive-and-cooling assembly, not only the SSD’s bare dimensions. Sony’s maximum width is 25 mm; supported lengths are 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm; and maximum thickness is 11.25 mm including the heat-dissipation mechanism. Within that total thickness, the limit is up to 8.0 mm above the board and 2.45 mm below it.

The 5,500 MB/s figure is Sony’s recommended sequential read speed, not a guarantee that an expansion drive will perform exactly like the PS5’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD. Sony cautions that performance can differ even when a drive’s stated sequential-read rating exceeds that recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need an M.2 SSD with a heatsink for PS5?

You need effective heat dissipation, but the heatsink does not have to be built into the SSD. A drive with an integrated heatsink is one route; a compatible separate cooling structure, such as a heatsink with a thermal transfer sheet, is another. In either case, cooling hardware counts toward Sony’s maximum dimensions.

Before buying, confirm the full assembled height and width against Sony’s limits. A bare SSD can fit the right form factor yet exceed the allowed thickness once a heatsink is attached. Also verify that the drive is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, is not M.2 SATA, and does not rely on HMB support, which Sony lists as unsupported.

Why the cooling check is easy to miss

Product listings often emphasize the drive’s bare board or controller specification. For PS5 compatibility, the relevant object is the complete assembly you will place in the expansion bay. Measure the SSD, heatsink, and thermal transfer material together. A cooling accessory that is too tall, too wide, or too thick can make an otherwise suitable drive fall outside Sony’s limits.

If the drive includes a heatsink, confirm that it is intended for the supported M.2 form factor and that its published dimensions include the cooling structure. If you add a separate heatsink, verify both the SSD and accessory specifications rather than relying on a generic “PS5 ready” label.

How do installation and everyday use differ?

USB extended storage is external: connect it to a supported port and use it as extended storage without installing hardware inside the console. M.2 requires fitting a compatible SSD into the PS5’s expansion slot, with cooling hardware installed within the permitted dimensions.

The difference continues after setup. USB makes sense when portability or archiving is the priority, but stored PS5 games need to be moved before play. M.2 remains installed and can serve as part of the playable PS5 library, so you avoid that transfer requirement for games stored there.

For either option, do not assume that meeting one requirement guarantees compatibility. A USB device still needs the correct speed rating, capacity, direct connection, and successful console recognition. An M.2 drive has additional interface, key, size, speed guidance, and cooling checks.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  1. Decide whether you need direct PS5-game play or mainly PS4 play and archiving.
  2. For USB, verify SuperSpeed 5 Gbps or later, 250 GB–8 TB capacity, and a direct connection plan without a hub.
  3. For M.2, verify PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, an M key, a supported length, and 250 GB–8 TB capacity.
  4. Check the sequential-read specification against Sony’s 5,500 MB/s recommendation.
  5. Check complete width and thickness with the heatsink or thermal transfer sheet installed.
  6. Exclude M.2 SATA and HMB-supported devices.
  7. Keep the receipt or return option until the PS5 recognizes the drive and your intended games work from it.

The final step is sensible because Sony does not promise that every device meeting a broad description will work. Compatibility labels are useful screening tools, but the exact interface, cooling hardware, and dimensions still need to match the console requirements.

Which storage setup should you choose?

Choose according to the games you play most and how often you switch titles. There is no need to treat USB and M.2 as mutually exclusive: they solve different storage problems.

Choose M.2 first if PS5 games are your priority

An M.2 SSD is the better first expansion if you want a larger set of PS5 games ready to launch, or if you want to download and update games directly on expanded storage. It is also the more convenient fit if you regularly move between several PS5 titles and would rather not copy them back from USB before playing.

M.2 is also the cleaner choice when you want one installed expansion to handle both generations. PS5 and PS4 games can be played from compatible M.2 storage, so you do not have to separate your library by platform. The main work happens before purchase: selecting a drive and cooling assembly that fit every requirement.

Choose USB first if you mainly need PS4 space or an archive

USB is a strong fit if you mainly play PS4 games and want to run them directly from external storage. It also suits a library you want to remove or move between compatible consoles, and it can hold PS5 games you are not currently playing. The limitation is that archived PS5 titles must be moved back before launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USB can be the lower-complexity route because it does not require opening the console or checking M.2 board and heatsink dimensions. That convenience does not remove the need to check SuperSpeed rating, capacity, direct connection, and actual PS5 recognition.

Use both for an active library plus an archive

If budget and available space allow, keep frequently played PS5 games on M.2 and use USB for PS4 games and less frequently played PS5 titles. This combination reserves direct-play expansion space for games you are actively playing while retaining an archive that can be copied back when needed.

A hybrid setup also gives each drive a clear job. M.2 is the active PS5 shelf; USB is the removable PS4 shelf and the backup-like archive for PS5 installations. When the active list changes, move a PS5 title from USB to M.2 rather than downloading it again, then move another title out when space is needed.

Do not select an M.2 SSD solely by its speed label. Check the exact interface, form factor, complete dimensions with cooling hardware, and HMB behavior against Sony’s requirements; the read-speed recommendation does not promise identical performance to the internal drive.

How should speed claims affect the decision?

For USB, the important threshold is the SuperSpeed USB rating of 5 Gbps or later and whether the drive is recognized when connected directly. A higher advertised number does not change the rule that PS5 games stored there must be moved before play.

For M.2, 5,500 MB/s or faster is Sony’s recommended sequential-read figure. Treat it as a compatibility and performance guideline, not a promise of identical behavior to the built-in SSD. Two drives with similar headline read ratings may not deliver exactly the same results, and Sony explicitly cautions that expansion performance can differ.

Therefore, paying for a dramatically higher speed label is not a substitute for checking Gen4x4 NVMe support, cooling, dimensions, and HMB behavior. A correctly compatible drive that meets Sony’s recommendation is more useful than a faster-looking model that fails a physical or interface requirement.

Can you move storage between PS5 consoles?

USB is the simpler removable option, but Sony also documents moving an M.2 drive to another PS5. For access to the data on a moved M.2 drive, the drive must be installed correctly in the other console and you must be signed in to the same account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If portability is the main reason you are expanding storage, consider whether you want to unplug an external drive or remove and reinstall an internal expansion drive. That practical difference may matter more than capacity when choosing between the two.

USB is therefore the natural choice for frequent physical movement, while M.2 portability is possible but involves installation and account requirements. In either case, plan the move around the way you actually share or use consoles rather than assuming every drive behaves like a permanently attached library.

Common buying pitfalls

  • Buying USB for direct PS5 play: even an external SSD cannot launch PS5 games from USB extended storage.
  • Using a hub: Sony requires the USB extended-storage drive to be connected directly, not through a USB hub.
  • Running two USB extended drives together: multiple drives may be connected and used one at a time, but only one can be active as extended storage.
  • Confusing M.2 SATA with NVMe: the M.2 shape is not enough; SATA models are unsupported.
  • Ignoring the heatsink’s size: Sony’s 11.25 mm total-thickness limit includes cooling hardware.
  • Assuming a speed rating guarantees internal-SSD performance: Sony says expansion performance can vary even above 5,500 MB/s.
  • Overlooking HMB: Sony lists HMB-supported devices as unsupported.
  • Choosing by capacity alone: capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB is necessary, but it does not establish interface, cooling, or physical compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an external USB SSD make PS5 games load directly from the drive?

No. The direct-play limitation applies to PS5 games on USB extended storage, whether the external device is an SSD or another compatible USB drive. To launch the game, move it to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD.

Can I use two USB extended-storage drives at the same time?

No. Sony permits multiple USB drives to be connected and used one at a time, but only one USB extended-storage drive can be in use at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an M.2 SATA drive the same as an M.2 NVMe drive for PS5?

No. The M.2 shape alone does not establish compatibility: Sony requires PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe with an M key and does not support M.2 SATA SSDs.

What happens if my M.2 SSD is faster than 5,500 MB/s?

That exceeds Sony’s recommended sequential-read threshold, but it does not guarantee the drive will match the performance of the PS5’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD. Sony notes that M.2 performance can vary.

Can a USB drive store PS5 games without redownloading them?

Yes. USB extended storage can retain PS5 game installations. You must move each title to console storage or compatible M.2 storage before you can play it.

Can I play PS4 games directly from an M.2 SSD?

Yes. Compatible M.2 storage supports direct play for PS4 games as well as PS5 games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a heatsink built into the M.2 SSD mandatory?

No. Effective heat dissipation is required, but it can come from an integrated heatsink or a compatible separate heatsink and thermal transfer sheet. The cooling hardware must remain within Sony’s width and thickness limits.

What M.2 sizes fit the PS5 expansion slot?

Sony lists 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 form factors. The complete assembly can be up to 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick, with supported lengths of 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm.

Can I move an M.2 drive to another PS5?

Sony documents moving an M.2 drive between PS5 consoles. It must be installed correctly in the other console, and you must be signed in to the same account to access the data.

Which option is better for a mostly PS4 library?

USB extended storage is often the simpler first choice because PS4 games can be played directly from it and the drive is easy to remove. M.2 remains useful if you also want direct play for PS5 games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Choose M.2 first for an active PS5 library. It is the expansion option that lets compatible PS5 games remain installed, downloadable, updateable, and playable without a copy-back step. Choose USB extended storage for direct PS4 play, easy removal, or keeping PS5 games archived. If you want both convenience and capacity, use M.2 for frequently played PS5 titles and USB for PS4 games and the rest of your library.
