Keep your PS5 on Sony’s latest system software by checking Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. When the console shows Up to date under the system software version, Sony says the latest version is installed. Use the built-in network updater whenever the console can reach the home screen; use Sony’s official USB procedure only when a network update fails or the console cannot complete it. Sony warns that delaying updates can expose a console to security risks or impair normal operation, while interrupting installation can damage the system. A full reinstallation is different from an ordinary update: it removes all console data and should be a last-resort recovery step.
How do I check if my PS5 firmware is up to date?
The quickest check is built into the console and does not require a download. From the home screen, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Read the status beneath the system software version. Sony identifies Up to date as the indication that the latest version is installed.

Check the update screen as well
To look for an update manually, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then choose Update System Software if that option is available. This is the supported network path for a PS5 that can start normally. The version number and release timing can change, so rely on the live regional PlayStation system-software page or the console’s own status rather than an old version number copied from a forum.
What the status does and does not prove
The console status confirms what software the PS5 has recognized as installed. It does not provide a user-facing cryptographic hash or an independent signature-verification workflow. Sony’s documented verification advice is to obtain update data through its official PlayStation download page for the appropriate region and to use the documented console or Safe Mode procedure.

Is it safe to update my PS5?
Updating through the console’s normal updater or Sony’s documented USB method is the supported approach. Sony Interactive Entertainment says system-software updates, including security updates, are released from time to time and strongly recommends installing the latest update as soon as possible. Its warning is broad: failing to update might expose the console to security risks or compromise proper functioning. Sony does not publish a list of specific current PS5 exploits in this guidance, so that warning should not be turned into a claim that a particular vulnerability affects a particular firmware release.
Do not interrupt installation
Sony’s instruction is explicit: Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your console to be damaged.
Leave the PS5 connected to power and do not unplug it, press the power button, or remove a USB drive while the progress screen is active. A failed download can usually be retried; an interrupted installation can leave the console unable to start normally.

Sony also advises against installing directly before or after a power outage. If your electricity has just returned, wait until power is stable before starting an update. If your area has frequent interruptions, postpone a non-urgent update until you can use a reliable power source; never begin an installation when you expect to need to shut the console down.
Use only Sony’s files and methods
Do not use update data from a different source, a renamed file from an unofficial mirror, or a procedure that is not documented by PlayStation. Sony warns that other sources or methods, and updates attempted on a modified console, can prevent normal operation or stop official update data from installing. Sony also says modification can affect warranty and repair services. The safe chain is: official regional download page, exact filename and folders, and the console’s built-in updater or Safe Mode.
How can I verify that a PS5 update file is official?
Verification here means controlling the source and following Sony’s file requirements, not comparing a checksum that Sony’s reviewed instructions do not describe. Download the file from Sony’s official PlayStation system-software page for your region. Keep the original filename, and do not open or alter the file.

Recognize the supported USB package
Sony’s manual-update package is named PS5UPDATE.PUP. The file must be inside a folder named UPDATE, which itself is inside a top-level folder named PS5. Folder and file names are case-sensitive in practice; Sony advises checking that the names use the required uppercase spelling if the console does not recognize the package.

Sony’s user-facing instructions do not specify a public hash value or tell owners to perform an independent signature check. Do not treat a third-party checksum list as Sony’s recommended verification method. If a download appears incomplete, fails validation, or came from an untrusted site, delete it and download a fresh copy from the official regional page instead.
Which PS5 update method should I use?
Choose the least destructive method that fits the console’s condition. A normal network update preserves your installed data. An official USB update is also a non-erasing update, but it requires a computer and a compatible drive. Reinstallation is a factory-level operation that deletes all console data.
| Action | When to use it | What you need | Data impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update System Software from the console | The PS5 reaches the home screen and can download normally | Internet connection and stable power | Designed to update system software without deleting user data |
| Update from USB Storage Device | A network download is stuck or repeatedly fails, or Sony directs you to the PC/Mac method | PC or Mac, USB drive formatted FAT32 or exFAT, approximately 1.1 GB free for the update file, and Safe Mode | Non-erasing update when you choose the update option |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Last-resort recovery after other supported options fail | Official reinstallation file, USB drive formatted FAT32 or exFAT, approximately 1.2 GB free for the reinstallation file, and Safe Mode | Deletes all console data and removes the existing system software before reinstalling it |
Do not select a reset or reinstallation option merely because a regular update is slow. The recovery choices have consequences that an ordinary update does not.

- After the console returns to the home screen, revisit Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and confirm the status says Up to date.
The update process may include a download phase and a separate installation phase. A download that stops can normally be retried; the installation phase is the part Sony specifically warns not to interrupt.
How do I install the official PS5 update from USB?
Use Sony’s USB procedure when the network download is stuck, repeatedly fails, or the support instructions direct you to a PC/Mac download. You need a USB drive with a FAT32 or exFAT format and approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file. A particular USB brand is not required.
Prepare the drive
- On a PC or Mac, format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting erases files already on the drive, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- At the top level of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a folder namedUPDATE. - Download the official update package from Sony’s regional PlayStation system-software page and save it inside the
UPDATEfolder asPS5UPDATE.PUP. Do not add another extension or change the spelling.
Start Safe Mode and apply the update
- Turn the PS5 completely off. Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep, which occurs about seven seconds after the first beep, to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable if Safe Mode asks for one, then press the controller’s PS button.
- Choose Update System Software.
- Select Update from USB Storage Device and follow the prompts.
- Leave the console powered on until installation finishes and the PS5 restarts. Removing the drive or cutting power during installation can damage the console.
If Safe Mode cannot find the file
- Confirm the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, not a different filesystem.
- Check the exact path:
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Verify that
PS5,UPDATE, andPS5UPDATE.PUPuse the required uppercase spelling. - Make sure the download is the update file, not the separate reinstallation file, and that approximately 1.1 GB is available.
- Download a fresh copy from Sony’s official page if the file is incomplete or was obtained from an unofficial source.
What should I do if a PS5 update download is stuck?
Start with the least destructive retry. Sony’s support procedure says to find the stalled item in Downloads/Uploads, view its error information, and try again. Read the displayed error before deleting anything; it may identify a network or storage condition that can be corrected without Safe Mode.
When to switch to USB
If repeated download attempts fail, use Sony’s official PC/Mac USB instructions. This bypasses the console’s download session but still uses the same signed update package and documented installation path. Do not jump directly to Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software); that option is reserved for recovery because it erases the console.
What not to do
Do not install a file from an unofficial mirror, use a renamed package from another console, or power off while the installation progress is running. Those actions add operational and security risk without providing a supported recovery benefit.

What is the difference between a PS5 update and a full reinstallation?
An update replaces or adds system-software components while leaving the console’s user data in place. A reinstallation removes the existing system software and installs it again, while deleting all data stored on the console. Sony describes the reinstallation choice as a factory or hard reset.
Non-erasing Safe Mode choices
Safe Mode includes recovery options that do not have the same data-destruction consequence as reinstallation. Read each option’s on-screen description before selecting it. If the issue is only a failed download, stay with the normal update flow or the USB update option.
Reset PS5 versus Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)
Sony distinguishes Reset PS5 from Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software); both delete user data, and the latter also removes the system software before reinstalling it. Treat either reset as a major recovery action, not as routine maintenance. A reinstallation file needs approximately 1.2 GB of free USB space, separate from the approximately 1.1 GB requirement for a standard update file.

How do I reinstall PS5 system software safely?
Only use reinstallation after supported non-erasing updates and recovery steps have failed, or when Sony’s instructions specifically call for it. Assume that games, saves, settings, screenshots, and other data stored on the console will be deleted.
- Back up data first if the PS5 still allows you to do so. Do not begin if you have irreplaceable local data and no backup unless you accept its loss.
- Prepare a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive with approximately 1.2 GB of free space.
- Create the exact
PS5/UPDATEfolder structure and place Sony’s official reinstallation package in it using the filename required by Sony’s instructions. - Start the console in Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep.
- Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), then follow every on-screen confirmation.
- Keep the console connected to stable power until the process completes. After setup, sign in again, restore backups where available, and check the installed version under Console Information.
Because reinstallation is destructive, a USB update that merely replaces system software is preferable whenever the console accepts it.

Can an unofficial update or modified PS5 create security and repair problems?
Yes. Sony warns that update data from another source, methods other than those documented by PlayStation, or an attempt to update a modified console might prevent normal operation or stop official update data from installing. Sony also says these circumstances can affect warranty and repair services. That is an operational and service warning, not proof of a particular exploit or a promise that every modified console will fail.
For a stock console, the practical safeguard is simple: use the built-in updater or the official regional download page, preserve the required filename and folder structure, and avoid interrupting installation. If a console has been modified, consult Sony’s current support and service terms before attempting any update; do not assume an ordinary recovery procedure will have the same outcome.
Recommended Free Tools
What should I verify after the update finishes?
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and confirm Up to date.
- Check that the console reaches the home screen without repeated Safe Mode prompts.
- Reconnect any USB storage only after installation has completed and the console has restarted.
- Test network sign-in and a game launch if the update was prompted by a functioning or connectivity problem.
- Keep the update file on the USB drive only if you need it for another console; otherwise remove it to avoid accidentally selecting the wrong package during a later recovery.
If the status is not up to date, repeat the supported check rather than relying on a version number shown in an old video or forum post. Sony’s live update page and the console’s own status are the authoritative current references.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I verify a PS5 firmware file with a checksum?
Sony’s user-facing instructions do not provide a checksum or ask owners to perform an independent hash comparison. Use the official regional download page and Sony’s exact filename, folder, and Safe Mode instructions instead; a checksum published by an unrelated site is not Sony’s documented verification method.
How often does Sony release PS5 security updates?
Sony says updates, including security updates, are released from time to time, but its guidance does not promise a fixed schedule. Check the console’s update screen or the live regional system-software page rather than waiting for a predictable monthly date.
Will a normal PS5 system update delete my games and saves?
The standard network update and the USB option labeled Update System Software are intended to update the operating system without the data-erasing behavior of a reset. Data deletion is associated with Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), so read the Safe Mode label carefully before confirming.
Does the PS5 update file need to match my region?
Download from the official PlayStation system-software page serving your region and use that file in the documented procedure. Sony’s guidance is organized by regional support pages, so relying on an unrelated region’s mirror removes an important source-control check.
What if my PS5 shows an error after a USB update?
Recheck the FAT32 or exFAT format, the exact PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP path, uppercase names, and available space. If those are correct, obtain a fresh official download and retry the non-erasing USB update before considering a data-deleting reinstallation.
