PS5 sold an estimated 32,831 units in Japan during Famitsu’s four-week period from August 31 through September 27, 2026. That was 10,979 fewer than the previous month’s 43,810 units, a calculated decline of 25.1%. At the same point in their lifecycles, however, PS5 still trailed PS4: VGChartz’s month-71 comparison records 7,749,760 PS5 units against 8,923,755 PS4 units in Japan, leaving PS4 ahead by 1,173,995 units.
The comparison needs two different time frames. September 2026 is PS5’s 71st month on sale, while the equivalent PS4 data point is December 2019. It is therefore a lifecycle comparison, not a claim that 8,923,755 PS4 consoles sold in Japan during September 2026.

How many PS5 consoles sold in Japan in September 2026?
Famitsu estimates that the PS5 family sold 32,831 Japanese retail units in the four-week period ending September 27, 2026. The total combines the standard PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro.
Famitsu’s previous published monthly total was 43,810 units. The difference is 10,979 units; dividing that change by 43,810 gives a 25.1% month-to-month decrease. These are domestic retail estimates, not Sony’s worldwide shipments, and Famitsu cautions that its estimation model can be revised as information is updated.

Is PS5 outselling PS4 at the same point in Japan?
No. On a month-for-month lifecycle basis, PS4 remained in front. VGChartz places September 2026 at PS5’s 71st month in Japan and matches it with PS4’s 71st month, December 2019.
| Console | Lifecycle point | Japan cumulative units | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Month 71 (September 2026) | 7,749,760 | Behind PS4 |
| PS4 | Month 71 (December 2019) | 8,923,755 | Leader |
| Difference | Same month since launch | 1,173,995 | PS4 lead |
That aligned total means PS5 had reached about 86.8% of PS4’s month-71 Japanese volume (7,749,760 divided by 8,923,755). It does not mean PS5 is permanently unable to close the gap; it describes the position at the specified lifecycle checkpoint.
Did PS5 catch up to PS4 in Japan?
Not by the September 2026 aligned comparison. The gap moved 201,176 units toward PS4 in the latest reported month, and PS4’s advantage over the preceding 12 months was 504,704 units, according to VGChartz’s comparison.
These gap figures are best read as direction indicators rather than a September-versus-September sales result. The PS4 side is its historical month-71 point in December 2019, while the PS5 side is the current month-71 point in September 2026. A positive movement toward PS4 means the matched PS4 trajectory was still ahead by the measure used in that comparison.
What exactly is being compared?
The headline numbers come from different measurement systems, so they answer different questions.
- Current Japanese demand: Famitsu’s 32,831-unit figure is a four-week estimate of domestic retail hardware sales and includes all three PS5 family models.
- Lifecycle pace: VGChartz aligns each console by months since launch, pairing PS5 month 71 with PS4 month 71 rather than comparing calendar years.
- Gap direction: The 201,176-unit latest-month movement and 504,704-unit trailing-12-month difference describe how the aligned totals changed in VGChartz’s series.
- Global context: Sony reports worldwide sell-in, which covers a different geography and channel from Famitsu’s Japanese retail estimate.
How do Sony’s worldwide totals change the picture?
Sony Interactive Entertainment reported more than 95 million PS5 units worldwide as of June 30, 2026. Its official historical table reported more than 117 million PS4 units worldwide as of June 30, 2022.

They use worldwide sell-in, different reporting dates and a different channel from Famitsu’s retail estimates. A global PS4 total cannot be subtracted from the Japanese PS5 number, and neither worldwide figure identifies September 2026 Japanese demand.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the September result mean for buyers?
For someone choosing hardware now, PS5 is the current platform represented by the September 2026 sales figure. The PS4 number is useful primarily as a historical benchmark for adoption speed and as context for the used-console market.
If you want current hardware
Use the Famitsu result to understand recent Japanese retail demand, but do not treat one four-week estimate as a forecast of availability, price or future software support. The PS5-family total also combines models, so it cannot show how much of the 32,831 came from the disc model, Digital Edition or PS5 Pro.
If you are considering a PS4
Use PS4’s month-71 result to compare historical momentum, not to infer current new-console sales. Any purchase decision should separately verify used-market condition, warranty status, game compatibility and local availability; none of those factors is measured by the lifecycle table.
Why the month-71 comparison is the fairest sales test
Comparing calendar September 2026 with calendar September 2019 would mix different distances from launch and different market conditions. Matching month 71 controls for console age, making the 1,173,995-unit difference a clearer measure of launch-era Japanese pace. It still cannot control for every external factor, including model mix, pricing, supply and software schedules.
The comparison also avoids a common labeling error: 8,923,755 is PS4’s cumulative Japanese total at its month-71 checkpoint, not PS4 hardware sold in September 2026. The available evidence does not provide a separate contemporaneous PS4 retail total for that month.
Frequently Asked Questions
What dates does Japan’s September 2026 PS5 sales figure cover?
Famitsu’s figure covers August 31 through September 27, 2026, a four-week aggregation rather than every calendar day of September. Its estimate may be revised if the underlying information or estimation model is updated.
Does the 32,831 figure include the PS5 Pro?
Yes. The Famitsu PS5-family total combines the standard PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro, so the published number is not a disc-model-only result.

Are PS5 and PS4 global totals directly comparable with the Japan table?
No. Sony’s figures are worldwide sell-in totals reported on different dates, while the Japan figures are retail estimates or aligned historical estimates. They are useful for scale, but not for calculating a Japan-versus-global gap.
What does PS5 month 71 mean?
It means the 71st month of PS5’s market lifecycle in the VGChartz series. The corresponding PS4 observation is its own 71st month, December 2019, so the dates differ even though the lifecycle age matches.
